If your MacBook says “Not Charging,” pauses at 80%, or loses battery while plugged in, first check the battery status, temperature, workload, and power source. Each can explain the symptom without a failed battery. Apple’s published troubleshooting guidance is general Mac charging advice; the available evidence does not establish macOS 27 as the cause of a charging problem.
What the battery status means
Open the battery status menu in the menu bar, then review System Settings > Battery. The exact controls can vary by Mac model and macOS version.

- “Charging On Hold”: Optimized Battery Charging may be delaying a full charge, often past 80%, to reduce battery wear. If you need a full charge now, choose Charge to Full Now in the battery status menu.
- “Charged to [%] Limit” or “Charging to [%] Limit”: A Charge Limit may be set. Apple says a Mac using this feature can occasionally charge to 100% to keep its state-of-charge estimate accurate. When connected to power, charging resumes if the battery level falls more than 5% below the set limit.
- “Not Charging”: The source may be too weak for charging, or the Mac may be using power faster than the source supplies it. This message alone does not prove the battery has failed.
Apple describes Optimized Battery Charging and Charge Limit in its battery charging guidance.
Check temperature and power demand
Move the Mac to a hard, well-ventilated surface and let it cool if it feels hot. Apple recommends an ambient temperature of 10° to 35° C (50° to 95° F) for Mac laptops. Charging may pause at 80% if recommended battery temperatures are exceeded; blankets and thick carpeting can also restrict ventilation.

Close unusually demanding apps, lower display brightness, and disconnect accessories you do not need while checking the charge. A heavy workload or connected devices can draw more power than the adapter supplies, so the battery may drain even when the Mac is plugged in.
Trace the power path from outlet to Mac
- Test the outlet. Confirm it supplies power, then firmly reseat the adapter and cable at both ends.
- Inspect the cable, adapter, and port. Look for visible damage and check that the charging port is clear. Unplug the adapter before cleaning; Apple recommends a soft, dry, lint-free cloth. Stop using damaged charging equipment.
- Verify that the cable supports charging. Some USB-C cables transfer data but do not charge a Mac. Try another cable only if it is designed for charging and is compatible with your Mac.
- Check the adapter wattage against your Mac model. Apple says a USB-C-charging Mac can use a USB Power Delivery-compatible adapter or display, but recommends at least the model’s minimum wattage for the best charging experience. A lower-wattage source may run the Mac without charging its battery. To see the connected adapter wattage, hold Option while opening Apple menu > System Information > Power; you can also check the adapter label. Match the power source and cable to your model rather than assuming one wattage fits every MacBook. See Apple’s USB-C power adapter guidance.
If your Mac has a MagSafe indicator, amber means charging or charging on hold; green means fully charged. On models that support both MagSafe and USB-C charging, connecting both does not speed things up: Apple says the Mac charges from one source at a time, using the source that provides more power. Apple’s charging status guidance explains the indicators.

Restart and check for software updates
Apple advises checking for macOS updates because software or firmware updates can improve communication between the Mac and its power adapter.
- Save your work and restart the Mac.
- Open System Settings > General > Software Update and install an available update if appropriate.
Restarting an Apple silicon Mac resets its power-management controller. For an Intel Mac, follow Apple’s model-specific SMC reset instructions; do not use Intel reset key sequences on Apple silicon. Restart and update guidance is also included in Apple’s Mac charging troubleshooting steps.

Run Apple Diagnostics if charging still fails
If the Mac still will not charge after the checks above, run Apple Diagnostics. It can help identify which hardware component might be at fault and suggest a next step. If the battery condition shows Service Recommended, share that status when you contact Apple or an Apple Authorised Service Provider. Do not keep using visibly damaged charging hardware.

Apple’s Developer release listing shows macOS 27.0.1 (26A434), dated September 28, 2026. The Apple charging guidance cited above provides general troubleshooting steps, and does not document a macOS 27-specific charging regression. If the issue began after an update, that timing is useful context for support, but it does not by itself establish that the update caused the problem. See the Apple Developer release listing.
