Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsChoose a MacBook if macOS suits your work and the apps and devices you rely on are confirmed to work with it. Choose a Windows laptop if you need Windows, want to select from a broad range of models and configurations, or find a particular Windows device that better fits your budget and workload. The label “Windows laptop” covers many different machines, so the useful comparison is between specific models—not two uniform platforms.
Start with the apps and devices you cannot do without
Make a list of the software, accessories and services you depend on for work, school or personal use. Include specialist programs, older applications, printers, audio or video equipment, accessibility tools and any device that needs a dedicated driver. Check support for each item on the exact laptop configuration you are considering.

This check is especially important for Windows laptops with ARM-based processors, such as Snapdragon models. Microsoft provides guidance for software and peripherals on Surface ARM-based devices; use it alongside the software maker’s compatibility information and the laptop maker’s support pages. A program that works on one Windows processor architecture may not work the same way—or at all—on another. Microsoft’s guide to ARM-based Surface devices can help identify questions to verify.
If a critical application, driver or peripheral is not confirmed to work, treat that as a purchase blocker until you have a reliable answer. Do not assume that a platform-wide label guarantees compatibility on every model.

Compare named models, not “Mac” against “Windows” in the abstract
The current MacBook Air example is the 2026 MacBook Air with M5, announced by Apple on March 3, 2026. Apple offers 13-inch and 15-inch versions. Its specifications list 16GB of unified memory as the starting configuration, options up to 32GB, 512GB of starting storage with options up to 4TB, and two Thunderbolt 4 ports. The displays measure 13.6 inches and 15.3 inches. Apple’s MacBook Air specifications describe the model and available configurations.
Windows laptops come from multiple manufacturers, across price tiers and processor architectures. Microsoft’s Copilot+ PC experiences are not the same as features on every Windows 11 computer, and Microsoft says availability varies by device and market. Microsoft’s Copilot+ PC overview explains the distinction. A Surface Laptop is one example of a Windows machine, not a stand-in for the category.

Compare the full configuration and price
Apple announced US starting prices of $1,099 for the 13-inch MacBook Air M5 and $1,299 for the 15-inch model. These are Apple’s announced starting prices, not a live retailer quote or a like-for-like comparison with every Windows laptop. Check current prices and availability in your region before deciding. Apple’s March 3, 2026 announcement gives the launch pricing.
Compare the actual configurations you would buy. Match screen size, memory, storage and any support coverage you consider necessary, then compare total prices. A low starting price on one machine may not represent the configuration you need; equally, a higher-priced model may include capacity you will not use.

Match performance claims to your workload
Separate everyday tasks—browsing, documents and video calls—from sustained professional workloads, gaming and creative work. The demanding task that matters most should shape your choice; a general platform reputation does not tell you how a specific laptop will perform in your applications.
Apple says the M5 MacBook Air offers up to 4x faster AI-task performance and up to 1.5x faster Blender ray-tracing performance than the MacBook Air with M4. Those are Apple-published comparisons between generations of MacBook Air, not independent rankings against Windows laptops. They may be useful context for Apple’s own product claims, but they do not establish that the M5 is faster than a particular Windows model. Apple’s announcement provides the claims and comparison context.

Apple claims up to 18 hours of battery life for the MacBook Air M5 under its stated test methodology. “Up to” is a manufacturer figure tied to test conditions; your runtime will depend on what you do, settings and other factors. Compare published claims cautiously, and look for independent tests that use workloads similar to yours. Apple’s M5 announcement describes its battery-life claim.

One available independent comparison from RTINGS tested a 15-inch MacBook Air M4 (2025) and a 15-inch Surface Laptop 7th Edition (2024), not the M5 against a current cross-section of Windows laptops. In RTINGS’ general-productivity battery test, the Surface lasted nearly 18 hours and the Air about 12 hours. RTINGS also found app compatibility better on the Air in that comparison. These results describe those specific tested machines and workloads; they do not predict the result for every Mac or Windows laptop. RTINGS’ comparison provides the test context.
Quick Recap
Use a practical decision process
- Write down must-haves. List required applications, peripherals, accessibility needs, screen size, ports and any specialist tasks.
- Verify compatibility on the exact model. Confirm app, driver and device support for the specific processor architecture. Give extra scrutiny to ARM-based Windows laptops.
- Choose the operating system you want to use. Consider macOS or Windows preference and how your existing devices and services fit. This is a personal fit question; the evidence here does not establish one ecosystem as objectively better for everyone.
- Compare configurations at a similar level. Match memory, storage, screen size and support coverage, then check current regional prices.
- Check the workload and portability trade-offs. Look for performance tests of your real applications and battery tests with comparable workloads. Compare the exact model’s size, display and ports rather than relying on category labels.
Which should you choose?
- Choose the MacBook Air M5 if macOS fits your preferences and your essential software and devices are confirmed compatible. Select between the 13-inch and 15-inch versions and configure memory and storage for your needs.
- Choose a Windows laptop if Windows is required or preferred, or if a particular Windows model better matches your budget, workload, screen, ports or other needs. Make the decision against a named configuration, not an unspecified category.
- Pause before buying an ARM-based Windows laptop if an essential app, driver or peripheral has not been confirmed to work on that exact device.
