A MacBook trackpad and a touchscreen both use swipes and pinches, but they work in different ways. A trackpad is a separate surface that sits below the display. Your fingers control a pointer or trigger a system action indirectly. On a touchscreen, you touch the content itself. The same motion can therefore produce a different result depending on the device, the app and your settings.
The core difference: indirect vs. direct input
On a MacBook, you move your fingers on the trackpad and the Mac turns that motion into pointer movement, clicking, scrolling, zooming or a system shortcut. Apple’s Multi-Touch gesture reference for Mac (published December 22, 2025) lists two-finger secondary click, two-finger scrolling, pinch zoom, rotation, page navigation, Mission Control, App Exposé and switching between full-screen apps.

On an iPad, your finger lands on the content or on a navigation area of the screen. Apple’s iPad navigation guide shows that where the gesture starts matters. For example, swiping up from the bottom edge goes Home, and swiping up and pausing opens Exposé. Swiping left or right along the bottom edge switches open apps.

Settings you can change
Mac gestures are configurable. According to Apple’s Trackpad settings guide, the Trackpad settings expose tracking speed, clicking, tap to click, secondary click, scroll and zoom, and several system gestures. Which controls you see depends on your Mac or trackpad. If a gesture doesn’t behave as you expect, check these settings first.

On supported Force Touch trackpads, a deeper press registers as a Force click and can give haptic feedback. Apple’s gesture reference doesn’t tie Force click to a single result. The action depends on the selected item or app, so there is no touchscreen equivalent to map it to.

What touch adds
Touch gestures depend on position and timing. Apple’s iPad guide describes edge swipes where the starting point and a pause change the outcome. A swipe up from the bottom edge goes Home, but swiping up and holding opens Exposé. A trackpad gesture usually doesn’t depend on where your fingers land on the pad. It depends on how many fingers you use and which way they move.
Don’t confuse an iPad touchscreen with an iPad trackpad
An iPad can also use a Magic Trackpad or the trackpad on certain keyboard cases. Apple documents these separately in Trackpad gestures for iPad. They support their own actions, including opening the Dock, going Home and opening Slide Over. If you use both input methods on the same iPad, you are using two different gesture sets.

Why the same swipe does different things
- The surface differs. A trackpad swipe moves content or invokes a desktop control. A touch swipe acts on whatever is under your finger.
- Finger count carries meaning on the Mac. Two fingers scroll, while three or four fingers typically trigger system views.
- Screen position carries meaning on touch. Edges and pauses are part of the gesture.
- Settings and hardware vary. Mac gestures can be turned off or changed, and not every trackpad offers every option.
Not every Mac gesture has a touchscreen equivalent, and iPad gestures can also vary by model and system version. Treat the two sets as related but separate.
