Dementium II vs. Dementium: The Ward: Which Survival Horror Game Should You Play First?

Play Dementium: The Ward first, then Dementium II. That is the clearest order for a new player because Dementium II is the sequel to the original. It is a release-order recommendation, not a claim that the games are equally available today or that one is definitively better.

Why play The Ward first?

Dementium: The Ward is the original, a 2007 survival-horror game. Contemporary coverage identifies Dementium II as its sequel, so starting with The Ward follows the series’ release order. The sequel introduces a different protagonist and setting; the evidence supports the order, but not a claim that every plot detail depends on playing the first game.

For the original’s premise, the player wakes in an abandoned hospital without memory and searches for clues and a way out while confronting creatures. Nintendo Life’s review of the North American DS version of Dementium II identifies it as the sequel to the 2007 game.

How do the two games differ?

Aspect Dementium: The Ward Dementium II
Series position Original; identified in contemporary coverage as a 2007 game. Sequel. Nintendo UK lists its Nintendo DS release date as 25 June 2010, a UK date rather than a worldwide release date.
Story setup An amnesiac wakes in an abandoned hospital and searches for clues and an exit. William Redmoor is held at Bright Dawn Treatment Center and experiences transportation to a parallel dimension. Escaping and uncovering the Doctor’s plans frame the story.
Play and features First-person shooting, puzzles, weapons, ammunition, a flashlight and exploration. First-person horror action, puzzles, sprawling areas, an on-screen map, three difficulty levels, and revised save and inventory systems. Nintendo’s description also highlights fighting while keeping the flashlight equipped.
Platform information in the available listings PC on Steam, a Nintendo Switch eShop listing, and physical Nintendo Switch and PS5 editions listed by Clear River Games. Nintendo UK’s product listing documents the Nintendo DS Game Card. A current remaster or store listing for other platforms is not established here.

The contrast is not simply old controls versus new controls: the platform and edition matter. Nintendo’s official description of Dementium II says it “improves on the critically acclaimed original with a revamped save system and new inventory interface which allows immediate access to weapons and equipment.” That description concerns the sequel’s design features; it does not establish a direct comparison with every later edition of The Ward.

Which versions can you play now?

Dementium: The Ward

  • The Steam listing documents a Windows PC release dated 27 October 2025, with Atooi as developer and publisher. It lists high-resolution and retro display options and marks the game Steam Deck Verified. Those are listing details for the PC edition.
  • Nintendo Australia’s eShop listing documents a Switch version, single-player play, English support and 694 MB of required space. Its description says this version was built from the ground up for Switch; do not assume its features are identical to the PC remaster.
  • Clear River Games lists physical editions for Nintendo Switch and PS5, with a listed release date of 23 July 2026. The page lists English, French, Italian, German and Spanish text and a PEGI 16 rating. Release and stock details can vary by region and change over time.

Dementium II

Nintendo UK’s listing identifies Dementium II as a Nintendo DS game and gives 25 June 2010 as its UK release date. That supports a legacy DS option; it does not confirm current stock, condition, or availability in a particular country.

What does the review evidence say about Dementium II?

Andrew Wight’s Nintendo Life review, published 6 June 2010, evaluates the North American Nintendo DS version. It praised the atmosphere and controls, while criticizing repetitive enemy and audio presentation, a limited narrative, and possible friction from the touchscreen interface. The reviewer estimated a campaign of about four hours and described scarce ammunition and melee weapons such as a knife or hammer. These are one reviewer’s impressions of the DS game, not a fresh comparison against the current versions of The Ward.

That review is useful context if you are considering the DS sequel, but it does not settle which game is scarier, better controlled, or better overall for every player. There is no matched critical comparison of both games established here.
