If your Android phone does not support that direct route, Google offers a QR-code alternative that uploads files for a temporary download. How AirDrop works
AirDrop is intended for sharing items such as photos, videos, and documents among nearby iPhone, iPad, and Mac devices. Both devices need Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled, and the recipient chooses whether to accept each transfer. Apple says AirDrop transfers are encrypted. See Apple’s AirDrop instructions.

On iPhone and iPad, Apple also says Personal Hotspot should be disconnected. On devices running iOS 17 or later, bringing two devices together is one way to start sharing. These details are covered in Apple’s iPhone and iPad AirDrop guide.
Quick Share between Android and Windows
Google’s published baseline for the Windows workflow is Android 6.0 or later and a 64-bit Windows 10 or later computer. ARM-based Windows computers require Windows 11 or later. Both devices need Bluetooth and Wi-Fi or Ethernet, must be on the same network, and should be within 5 meters. These are Google’s stated requirements, not a guaranteed working range for every network or setup. Consult Google’s current Quick Share instructions for Android and Windows.

The sender selects a nearby device and shares; the recipient approves the incoming request before files transfer. Google says shared files are encrypted. Network configuration or Bluetooth capabilities can prevent devices from appearing to each other even when the basic requirements are met.

Direct sharing on supported Android models
Google documents direct Quick Share-to-AirDrop transfers on Pixel 8a or later and certain models from Samsung, Oppo, OnePlus, Vivo, Xiaomi, Honor, Transsion, and Motorola. That list does not confirm support for every model from those brands, so check the exact handset against current manufacturer or Google guidance before relying on the feature. Google’s Quick Share help page describes the supported-device workflow.

- On the iPhone, iPad, or Mac, open AirDrop settings and set visibility to Everyone for 10 minutes.
- On the Android phone, choose the content, open Quick Share, and select the nearby Apple device.
- Accept the AirDrop notification on the Apple device.
The temporary Everyone setting matters: an Apple device using a more restricted visibility setting may not be discoverable through this route.
QR-code sharing when direct support is unavailable
Google’s documented fallback creates a QR code for the Apple recipient to scan. The code opens a secure link in the recipient’s browser, where the shared files can be downloaded. This is a different transfer path from direct nearby sharing: both devices need internet access, and the files are uploaded to Google’s servers for temporary availability. Google says the files are end-to-end encrypted and downloadable for 24 hours.

For this QR workflow, Google lists a maximum of 10 GB of files per 24 hours, up to 1,000 files per session, and up to 20 Apple-device recipients at a time. Mobile data charges may apply if either device is not using Wi-Fi. See Google’s Quick Share instructions for the current workflow and limits.
Privacy, acceptance, and visibility
Both systems give the recipient control over whether to receive an ordinary incoming transfer: AirDrop recipients accept or decline, and Quick Share recipients approve a request. Google says Quick Share files are encrypted; Apple says AirDrop transfers are encrypted. For the QR method, Google specifically describes end-to-end encryption and temporary hosting for download. These statements describe the services’ documented protections, not a broader guarantee about every device setting or what happens after a recipient saves a file.

Actual performance may depend on the devices, connection, file sizes, and network conditions.

If Quick Share cannot find or reach a device
- For Android-to-Windows sharing, confirm Bluetooth and Wi-Fi or Ethernet are on, both devices use the same network, and their visibility settings allow discovery.
- Check whether the network permits device-to-device communication; some network or Bluetooth capabilities can interfere with discovery.
- If discovery or transfer is failing on Windows, Google suggests bringing the devices within 30 centimeters as a troubleshooting step. This is not the normal stated operating distance; Google’s general proximity guidance is within 5 meters.
- For direct Android-to-Apple sharing, confirm the Apple device is set to Everyone for 10 minutes and that its recipient accepts the AirDrop alert.
- For QR-code sharing, confirm both devices have internet access and that the shared content fits Google’s stated limits.
