Does a MacBook have a touchscreen?
Apple’s MacBook Air specifications describe a Liquid Retina display and Force Touch trackpad, not touchscreen input. That corrects the premise behind searches such as “MacBook touchscreen”: in the Apple product documentation reviewed, a MacBook’s screen is not operated by touch. This is a statement about Apple’s documented MacBooks, not every laptop brand or any future product.

A MacBook still offers pointer control through its built-in trackpad, alongside its keyboard. If direct tapping or drawing on the display is essential, look to iPad rather than expecting a MacBook screen to respond to touch.

Touch and pen input
Start with iPad if tapping the screen, holding the device as a tablet, or using a pen directly on the display is central to your work. Apple describes Sidecar as a way to use Apple Pencil for drawing in Mac apps on supported setups, but that input happens through the iPad—not by touching the MacBook display.

Typing and pointer control
A MacBook includes its keyboard and trackpad in the computer. An iPad can be paired with an Apple keyboard, including models with a trackpad, but the accessory is an extra purchase and must be compatible with the iPad. For a specific example, Apple’s 13-inch iPad Pro Magic Keyboard page lists a trackpad designed for iPadOS cursor control and Multi-Touch gestures; it specifies iPadOS 17.4 or later and compatibility with 13-inch iPad Pro M4 and M5. Check Apple’s current listing before buying because compatibility and software requirements can change.
Apps and operating system
Choose according to the applications and workflows you actually rely on. Verify that each works as needed on macOS or iPadOS; the device and accessory information alone does not establish that an iPad app is equivalent to its Mac counterpart, or vice versa.

Tablet handling or desk-based work
Think about whether you want to remove or fold away the keyboard and use the screen as a tablet, or whether you will mostly work at a desk with a keyboard and pointer. Portability depends on the exact iPad, keyboard, and how you carry or use them, so neither setup is universally more portable.

What does an iPad keyboard add?
Apple says iPad Magic Keyboards and Smart Keyboards are sold separately. Its support guide describes them as magnetically attaching without switches, plugs, or pairing, and says they allow typing while leaving the full iPad screen visible. Compatibility varies by keyboard version and iPad generation, so check the specific combination rather than assuming that any Apple keyboard fits any iPad.

When comparing cost, count the iPad and the keyboard together. A keyboard-equipped iPad is a different purchase from an iPad on its own, while a MacBook already includes its keyboard and trackpad.
Can an iPad replace a laptop?
It can be a suitable alternative if the apps you need work on iPadOS and the touch-first tablet format suits your tasks. Add a compatible keyboard if you type at length, and consider a trackpad-equipped model if pointer work matters. If your work depends on macOS applications or workflows, choose a MacBook instead of assuming an iPad setup will provide the same experience.

When should you consider Sidecar?
Sidecar is a hybrid option for people who need a Mac workflow but also want an iPad as a second Mac display or as tablet input for drawing in Mac apps. It depends on supported devices and requirements set out by Apple, so verify both devices against Apple’s Continuity guidance. Sidecar adds an iPad to the setup; it does not turn the MacBook display into a touchscreen.

A practical decision checklist
- List the apps and workflows you depend on. Confirm they meet your needs on macOS or iPadOS.
- Decide whether direct screen input is essential. If yes, begin with iPad; a MacBook’s documented input is its keyboard and trackpad.
- Assess how much you type and use a pointer. A MacBook includes both inputs; an iPad may need a separately purchased compatible keyboard.
- Check the exact accessory match. Confirm the keyboard supports your iPad generation and that the required iPadOS version is installed.
- Compare complete setups. Include the keyboard in the iPad total and consider whether tablet handling is useful for your routine.
- Consider Sidecar only if it solves a real need. Check Apple’s support requirements for both devices if you want an iPad to complement a Mac.
