At the destination, the aircraft checks that the drop zone is safe, delivers the package using its operator’s method, or aborts the delivery if conditions are unsuitable. The exact ordering steps, products, timing and drop-off method depend on the provider and location.
How to place a drone-delivery order
- Check whether your address and item qualify. Drone delivery is local, not a general shipping option. Amazon says customers can check service availability and browse eligible products. At most Prime Air locations, Amazon says nearly all eligible items weigh 5 pounds or less and fit in a large shoebox; eligibility still varies by site. - Confirm the delivery point or zone. Prime Air asks a customer to confirm a delivery point for the first drone order; the customer can keep it or select another for a later order. Wing’s checkout indicates the home’s delivery zone. The available choices and checkout flow are not the same across services.
- Place the order through the available channel. Depending on the provider and location, the order may be placed in a retailer’s app, the operator’s app or marketplace, or another participating checkout. If drone delivery does not appear as an option, the address, item or operating conditions may not qualify.
What happens after checkout
1. The order is prepared and an aircraft is assigned
The delivery operation prepares the eligible package and assigns an aircraft. Wing says its automated systems select drones, plan routes, conduct flights and coordinate aircraft. Prime Air describes flights on pre-planned routes between delivery centers and customer delivery locations. These are descriptions of those operators’ systems, not a universal industry procedure. 2. The drone flies a planned route under oversight
Automation handles navigation and flight tasks, while people and operational systems monitor the service. Amazon says Prime Air uses FAA-approved beyond-visual-line-of-sight (BVLOS) authorizations, trained flight monitors, airspace conflict checks and real-time weather decisions. Its operations page gives Prime Air cruise-altitude bands of 205–250 feet above ground on the outbound leg and 325–370 feet on the return. Wing says its drones navigate autonomously and certified pilots oversee operations. These altitude and oversight details are operator-specific; they should not be assumed for every delivery drone.
3. The aircraft checks the drop area
Before delivering, a drone must determine whether the intended area is safe. Amazon says its MK30 descends to 13 feet above the delivery point and scans for obstacles. If it detects a person, pet, vehicle or another hazard, it may refuse the delivery. Wing says its aircraft checks the selected delivery zone before lowering the order. 4. The package is released or lowered
Drop-off methods vary. Prime Air describes a low hover followed by release at the selected delivery point; its operations page says, “The drone descends to 13 feet before delivering to the selected delivery point.” Wing lowers the package on a tether, then the customer collects it after the aircraft departs. A customer should follow the specific provider’s instructions rather than approach or try to handle an aircraft in flight.
What if the delivery cannot be completed?
A delivery can be delayed or aborted if weather turns poor, a hazard enters the drop zone, or the aircraft encounters another operational issue. Amazon says Prime Air suspends flights in adverse weather and may return to base or choose a safe landing location if conditions change. Its described Safe Contingent Landing procedure addresses unexpected weather, communications outages, emergency air traffic and rare multiple system failures. How services differ
There is no single consumer experience or aircraft specification for drone delivery. Check the provider’s checkout and local terms for these differences:
- Ordering channel and availability: Service may appear only for certain addresses, products and participating retailers.
- Eligible package: Weight, size and item rules vary by operator and service location.
- Delivery point: One service may ask you to choose or confirm a point; another may identify a delivery zone for your address.
- Flight oversight and route: Automation, monitoring, approved operating areas and route details are provider-specific.
- Drop-off and exceptions: A package may be released from a hover or lowered on a tether, and the response to hazards or weather depends on the operator.
In the United States, commercial package-delivery operators use the FAA’s Part 135 air-carrier framework, with operator-specific authorizations. The FAA’s operator list includes Wing, UPS Flight Forward, Amazon Prime Air, Zipline, Causey Aviation Unmanned, DroneUp and Drone Express. How fast is drone delivery, and what does it cost?
Timing and fees are service terms, not industry-wide standards. Amazon’s 2026 Prime Air information says deliveries can arrive as fast as 30 minutes, with most orders taking around 60 minutes after checkout. Amazon lists delivery as free for Prime members on orders of $50 or more, $2.99 for Prime members on orders below $50, and $4.99 for customers without Prime. Wing says its drones can fly up to 60 mph and reports average flight times of five minutes or less. That is Wing’s description of its operation, not a prediction of total order-to-door time or a general drone-delivery benchmark. Wing customer information.

Privacy and emissions claims
Amazon says Prime Air drones use cameras and sensors for navigation and hazard detection, that onboard camera data is not live-monitored by a person, and that the data is used for safety and customer experience. Amazon also describes its aircraft as fully electric, with zero exhaust emissions during flight.
