How much storage does a MacBook Pro have? It depends on the model year, chip and configuration. Apple’s March 2026 announcement says current M5 and M5 Pro models start with 1TB of built-in SSD storage, while M5 Max starts with 2TB. Configurations listed by Apple go up to 8TB for M5 Max. Older MacBook Pro models can have different starting capacities.

Storage depends on the machine’s generation as well as its chip. For example, Apple’s 2025 14-inch MacBook Pro with M5 specifications listed 512GB or 1TB configurations, with options through 4TB. Apple’s March 2026 announcement later described the 14-inch M5 as standard with 1TB. Check the year and exact model rather than applying a current starting capacity to every MacBook Pro.

Advertised storage versus available space
The capacity printed in a configuration is not necessarily the amount of free space shown in macOS. Apple notes: “1TB = 1 trillion bytes; actual formatted capacity less.” The operating system, apps and personal files also use space, so free capacity varies from one Mac to another. Apple repeats the formatted-capacity qualification in its 16-inch M5 Pro and M5 Max specifications and 2024 16-inch MacBook Pro specifications.
How to check storage on a MacBook Pro you own
- Open the Apple menu and choose System Settings.
- Select General, then Storage.
- Review the capacity and the space currently used or available on that Mac.
To identify which generation you have, choose About This Mac from the Apple menu and note the model and chip information. Compare that model with the corresponding Apple specifications; the storage screen shows the situation on your actual machine.

Does an external drive increase the built-in SSD?
No. An external SSD or other storage device provides separate space for files and projects; it does not change the capacity of the MacBook Pro’s internal SSD. Apple lists Thunderbolt 5 USB-C ports on current M5 Pro and M5 Max models, and an SDXC card slot on the 16-inch model, which can provide connection options for external storage. See Apple’s 16-inch M5 Pro and M5 Max specifications for those connections.
