The iPad mini is substantially lighter and smaller to pack. Apple lists the Wi-Fi model at 293 grams and measures it at 195.4 × 134.8 × 6.3 mm. The Wi-Fi + Cellular model weighs 297 grams. Apple lists the 13-inch MacBook Air at 1.23 kilograms (2.7 pounds). These are manufacturer specifications, not a comparison of complete travel kits: a keyboard added to the iPad mini would add another item to your bag.

For a commute, a small personal bag or reading while standing, the mini’s tablet form is easier to hold and stow. The MacBook Air takes more room, but it is self-contained for laptop work: its keyboard and trackpad are built in.
Which is better for reading?
Choose iPad mini for handheld reading
Its 8.3-inch display and low listed weight make the iPad mini the more natural choice if you mainly want to read while holding the device. It is also easier to put away between stops. Apple specifies a Liquid Retina display. Whether that screen feels comfortable depends on the reader and conditions such as glare, text size and how long the device is held.

Choose MacBook Air to see more at once
The MacBook Air’s 13.6-inch screen gives you a larger workspace and can show more content at once. That may suit reading alongside notes, references or other laptop tasks, but its size and weight make it less convenient to hold like a book. A larger screen is not automatically more comfortable for every reader.
Which works better for travel tasks?
If travel means reading, browsing and carrying as little as possible, the iPad mini is the stronger fit. If it means writing, managing documents or doing work that benefits from a keyboard and trackpad, the MacBook Air is more practical without relying on an extra keyboard accessory.

The iPad mini can be paired with an external keyboard, but that changes the travel setup: consider the added weight, space and accessory you need to carry. If you expect to type extensively, the MacBook Air’s integrated keyboard and trackpad make it the simpler all-in-one choice.

How should you compare battery life?
Apple claims up to 10 hours of Wi-Fi web browsing or video playback for the iPad mini Wi-Fi model. For the Wi-Fi + Cellular version, Apple lists up to 9 hours of cellular data use. Apple claims up to 15 hours of wireless web for the MacBook Air. These are different manufacturer test categories, so they do not establish which device lasts longer under identical travel use. “Up to” figures are not a guarantee of real-world runtime.

For a trip, plan around your own use: cellular connectivity, screen brightness, network conditions and the apps you run can affect actual battery life. If you choose the mini, distinguish the Wi-Fi model from Wi-Fi + Cellular when checking specifications.

Apple’s cited specifications identify the MacBook Air as the 13-inch M5 model, which Apple Support lists as a 2026 model. Check the exact generation and connectivity configuration when comparing listings, since the specifications above refer to those named models.
