Evaluate an AI company by tracing how it earns revenue, what it costs to deliver each revenue stream, how much cash growth consumes, and what assumptions its valuation requires. A revenue multiple alone cannot tell you whether the business is durable or fairly valued: software subscriptions, usage-based inference, services, hardware, and infrastructure can have very different economics.
How can you tell whether an AI company’s revenue is high quality?
Start with the audited income statement and revenue-recognition notes, then map each stream to how it is earned and when it is recognized. “AI revenue” is not one uniform category. It may include recurring subscriptions, consumption-based fees, software licenses, hardware or systems, maintenance, and professional services.

Separate the revenue streams
For each stream, assess whether revenue recurs, depends on customer usage, requires ongoing delivery, or is largely a one-time sale. Review contract duration, renewal and cancellation rights, variable fees, discounts, reseller or channel exposure, customer concentration, and whether large customer wins are likely to continue. A fast-growing services line, for example, can reflect implementation work rather than a durable recurring base.
C3.ai’s FY2025 filing reported that subscriptions represented 84% of total revenue and grew 18% year over year, while professional-services revenue rose 89%. The same filing reported FY2025 cost of subscription revenue of $143.841 million, up from $128.469 million in FY2024, citing higher payroll and contractor costs, data-center costs, and facilities costs. Those company-specific results show why growth rates need to be read alongside revenue mix and delivery costs.

C3.ai’s FY2026 filing describes contracts that can combine software licenses, SaaS, maintenance and support, and professional services. The mix can affect both revenue-recognition timing and economics; do not assume every contract described as an AI offering is simply a subscription.
Reconcile reported revenue with cash and contract terms
Compare recognized revenue with cash collections, receivables, contract assets, and deferred revenue. Check whether growth is organic or acquisition-driven, and whether accounting changes or a shift in business mix make year-over-year comparisons less meaningful. Revenue recognized today, amounts billed, and cash collected are related but distinct measures.
What do gross margins reveal about AI economics?
Gross margin is gross profit divided by revenue, but a blended percentage can conceal major differences between software, inference, infrastructure, hardware, and services. Examine reported GAAP margins first, then read the reconciliation for any non-GAAP figure so you can see what has been excluded.

Compare the economics by stream
Where disclosures allow, track the costs to serve a customer or unit of usage: inference and hosting, data-center capacity, third-party model or cloud charges, networking, power, depreciation, support, and implementation labor. For usage-based products, ask whether cost per task, user, token, or customer is falling as volume grows. Consider utilization and reserved capacity as well as revenue: adding capacity before demand converts into paid usage can weigh on margins and cash.
The filings below are illustrations from individual companies, not targets or representative averages for the AI sector.
| Company and period | Reported margin or mix | What the filing indicates |
|---|---|---|
| C3.ai, FY2025 | Total gross margin: 61%; subscription margin: 56%; professional-services margin: 85%. Subscriptions were 84% of revenue. | The company attributed the increase in total gross margin primarily to subscription margin. Professional-services margin fell as payroll and contractor costs rose. The figures are company-specific historical results. |
| Cerebras, FY2025, in a 2026 SEC-filed registration statement | Gross margin: 39.0%, down from 42.3% in FY2024. | The company attributed the decline primarily to higher data-center costs associated with cloud inference capacity. Inference-related growth can coincide with margin pressure when capacity costs rise. |
| Tyler Technologies, 2025 | Overall gross margin: 46.5%, compared with 43.8% in 2024. | The company attributed much of the increase to a mix shift toward higher-margin SaaS revenue, with merchant fees, hosting costs, and software-development amortization among the offsets. This is a software-company example, not an AI-sector benchmark. |
Look beyond the blended percentage
A margin increase may reflect a favorable mix shift rather than lower costs in every product. Conversely, a lower margin during capacity build-out does not by itself establish that a business model is uneconomic. Identify what changed, whether the costs are recurring, and whether the company explains how utilization or customer mix may affect them.

Does revenue growth translate into operating leverage and cash generation?
Not necessarily. Gross profit must still cover research and development, sales, marketing, support, and administration. A company can grow quickly while spending more than it earns, particularly if it must fund product development, customer acquisition, or compute capacity in advance.

Review operating expenses as a share of revenue and preserve the issuer’s accounting definitions. Examine sales efficiency and customer-acquisition payback using disclosed measures, or a clearly identified proxy if the company does not disclose them. Ask whether research, selling, and support can grow more slowly than revenue without weakening the product, customer retention, or delivery quality. In services-heavy contracts, include implementation labor and any prioritized engineering needed to win or retain customers.
Follow cash needs, not just adjusted earnings
Reconcile adjusted profitability with GAAP results and cash flow. Review stock-based compensation, capital expenditure, lease commitments, working capital, debt maturities, cash runway, and dependence on future fundraising. Stock-based compensation is non-cash in the period but dilutes existing owners; capital expenditure can also require substantial cash without appearing in EBITDA. Infrastructure-heavy businesses may need to purchase or reserve compute capacity before customer demand becomes collected revenue.

How should you interpret ARR, bookings, RPO, and backlog?
Treat these as issuer-defined indicators, not interchangeable substitutes for recognized revenue or cash. Read the footnote for each measure and record how the company defines it, whether it includes acquisitions or currency changes, whether it is annualized or point-in-time, and whether the underlying amount is contracted, billed, delivered, or recognized.
IBM’s 2025 filing defines ARR for its Software segment using recurring software revenue models and says ARR should be viewed independently of software revenue: its measure and inputs may not represent revenue that will be recognized in the future. C3.ai’s FY2025 filing similarly says RPO should be considered alongside revenue and other disclosed metrics; its contracts can include multiple performance obligations.
- Do not add ARR to recognized revenue.
- Do not treat pipeline or bookings as completed sales or collected cash.
- Do not assume a contract’s full face value will be recognized soon; consider performance obligations and cancellation terms.
- Compare each company’s metric with its audited revenue and cash flow over time, using the company’s own definition consistently.
What revenue multiple should an AI company have?
There is no trustworthy, independent industry-wide figure established here for a “typical” AI-company revenue multiple. The companies grouped under AI can have very different business models and capital needs, so one sector-wide number would obscure more than it explains.
Best Value
Choose a consistent denominator and relevant peers
Enterprise value to forward revenue is often used for young or loss-making companies, but define the denominator precisely: fiscal year or next twelve months; gross or net revenue; total or recurring revenue; reported or adjusted. Compare companies with similar scale, growth source and durability, gross-margin profile, capital intensity, customer concentration, and path to profitability. When moving from enterprise value to equity value, account for net cash or debt and potential dilution.
TA Fintech Inc.’s management valuation discussion in a 2026 SEC filing cautioned that “no single comparable is determinative.” It noted that scale, growth durability, gross margin, AI inference and data costs, and profitability trajectory can affect observed multiples, and that private financing valuations can differ from public-market valuations. This is a company management’s methodological discussion, not an independent valuation opinion or a market-wide multiple survey.
Reverse-engineer the assumptions
Ask what growth, margin, and profitability path the current valuation implies, then identify evidence for each step. TA Fintech’s 2026 management analysis used an at-scale revenue view of about $100 million within 3–4 years and an illustrative forward-revenue multiple range of about 8–12×. Those were assumptions in that company’s own valuation discussion, not a sector statistic or a recommended multiple for other AI companies.

- Model inference and hosting costs, capacity utilization, gross margin, and sales efficiency in each case.
- Estimate the cash and financing needed to reach the projected scale, including capital expenditure and working capital.
- Check how much the resulting valuation depends on high future revenue, sustained margins, or a multiple that the market may not maintain.
How do you compare two AI companies fairly?
Use the same periods and definitions where possible, but do not force unlike businesses into a single benchmark. An application vendor, model or API provider, cloud inference operator, and AI hardware company may all sell AI-related products while facing different gross margins, investment needs, and routes to revenue.
- Recurring versus one-time revenue, customer concentration, and contract duration.
- Growth rate and source, including usage expansion, new customers, acquisitions, or business-mix shifts.
- Gross margin by stream and exposure to inference, hosting, hardware, and implementation costs.
- Retention, renewals, and usage expansion, alongside cancellation and variable-pricing terms.
- Sales efficiency, customer-acquisition payback, and implementation burden.
- Research and development spending and stock-based compensation.
- Cash conversion, capital expenditure, and reliance on external funding.
- Valuation denominator, peer comparability, dilution, and sensitivity to scenario assumptions.
Company filings provide period-specific facts and issuer explanations; they do not establish universal AI-sector margin or valuation norms. Treat each comparison as a way to test assumptions about a particular business, not as proof that another company’s multiple or margin should apply.
