Choose the MacBook Neo if keeping the price down matters most and you mainly browse, write, stream, join video calls, or do modest creative work. Choose the MacBook Air M4 if you need more memory headroom, want a 15-inch screen, or depend on faster connections for external drives and displays. Compare current prices and the exact configurations available where you live: the Neo’s price has changed since launch, and the Air M4’s launch prices are historical.
How the two laptops differ
The Neo and Air M4 are both Mac laptops, but they sit in different price and capability tiers. The Neo uses Apple’s A18 Pro chip; the 2025 Air uses the M4. Apple’s published Neo performance claims compare it with an Intel-based PC, not with the M4 Air, so there is no basis here for a direct speed ranking. The practical choice is better made around your workload, screen, memory, ports, and current price.

The Neo is the more straightforward choice when budget is the priority and your work fits everyday computing: browsing, documents, streaming, video calls, and modest creative tasks. Apple describes browsing, streaming, photo editing, and creative hobbies as intended uses, but that does not establish performance in every app.

Before choosing it, make sure its available memory configuration and physical connections suit your plans. Apple’s announcement identifies an 8GB Neo test configuration but does not establish every retail memory or storage option. If you expect heavy multitasking or demanding apps, the Air’s listed memory configurations offer more headroom; that is a specification-based reason to prefer it, not a measured speed comparison.
When the MacBook Air M4 is worth choosing
You need more memory headroom
The cited Air specifications start at 16GB of unified memory and list 24GB and 32GB configurations. That makes the Air a stronger fit on paper for heavier multitasking or apps that benefit from more memory. It does not, by itself, prove how much faster a particular app will run.
You want a larger screen
The 13-inch Air has a 13.6-inch display, while the 15-inch model has a 15.3-inch display. Apple lists 500 nits, P3 wide color, and support for one billion colors for both. The cited Neo announcement identifies a 13-inch Liquid Retina display and one-billion-color support, but does not provide the same detailed panel figures for comparison.

Your desk setup depends on ports or external displays
MacRumors reports that the Neo has one USB 3 port rated at 10 Gb/s, one USB 2 port rated at 480 Mb/s, and support for one external 4K display at 60Hz. The guide contrasts these limits with the Air’s Thunderbolt 4 ports and broader external-display support. If you use fast external storage, docks, or several displays, check the exact Air model’s official specifications and confirm that its display support matches your setup before buying. See the MacRumors comparison.
What do their battery claims mean?
Apple lists up to 16 hours for the Neo. For both M4 Air sizes, Apple lists up to 18 hours of video streaming and up to 15 hours of wireless web. These are manufacturer figures under specified test conditions, not a promise of the same runtime in everyday use. Battery life varies with settings and workload, so the figures do not establish that the Air will last longer for every buyer or task. Apple launched the Neo in the US at $599 in March 2026. Tom’s Guide reported on October 5, 2026, that its price had risen to $699 after a June 25 increase. Apple’s US launch prices for the M4 Air were $999 for the 13-inch model and $1,199 for the 15-inch model in March 2025. Those Air figures are historical, and the sources do not establish current M4 stock or a universal price premium. Check the reported Neo price change alongside current local listings.

If a discounted M4 Air is close in price to a Neo, compare the exact memory and storage, seller, device condition, warranty, and return policy. A launch price or a reported price increase cannot tell you what either laptop costs today in your market.
A quick decision checklist
- Pick Neo: Its current price is materially lower, and its memory, screen, and port limits fit your everyday workload.
- Pick Air M4: You want more than 8GB of memory, the 15-inch screen, or Thunderbolt-class connections and broader external-display support.
- Pause and compare listings: Prices are close, or the listings differ in storage, condition, warranty, or return terms.
This is a specification-based buying recommendation, not a hands-on review. The sources do not establish controlled Neo-versus-Air M4 performance or battery tests.
