Neither the MacBook Air nor Windows laptops are automatically the better value. The MacBook Air is a specific product line; Windows laptops range from basic to premium and vary widely in price and features. Choose by matching the operating system and required apps first, then compare specific models at current local prices with similar memory, storage, screen size, and accessories.

If your work, school, a required application, or a peripheral depends on Windows, start by checking a Windows laptop that supports it. Compatibility can vary by exact model and configuration, so verify the requirements for the apps and devices you use.

These are launch prices, not a promise of today’s retailer price or prices in other countries. Check the current checkout price where you live. Apple’s announcement also lists two Thunderbolt 4 ports and support for up to two external displays; account for a hub or adapters if your devices need other ports. Apple’s March 2026 announcement
Apple claims up to 18 hours of battery life. That is a manufacturer figure, not an independent head-to-head result, and it should not be compared directly with a Windows laptop’s advertised maximum unless the testing methods and workloads match. Apple also publishes selected comparisons with an Intel Core Ultra X7 PC laptop; those comparisons are Apple’s own, not independent evidence that the Air is faster or better value overall. Compare specific models, not Mac versus Windows in the abstract
A MacBook Air can be compared meaningfully with a named Windows laptop, but “Windows laptop” is a category rather than a single rival. A Surface Laptop, for example, is one Windows product line, not a stand-in for every Windows model. Before choosing, compare the following at the same time and in the same market:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Total current price: Check the actual price on the same date. Keep standard pricing, education discounts, promotions, refurbished listings, and trade-in credit distinct.
- Memory and storage: Match capacity as closely as possible. The M5 Air starts at 512GB of storage and is listed with up to 4TB; do not treat a higher-capacity configuration on one side as equivalent to a lower-capacity one.
- Screen and portability: Compare screen size, resolution, brightness, weight, and the practical effect of carrying the laptop. Apple’s listed weights are 2.7 pounds for the 13-inch Air and 3.3 pounds for the 15-inch model.
- Ports and accessories: Check whether each model connects directly to your monitor, storage, and other peripherals. Add the cost of any hub or adapter you would actually need.
- Warranty and support: Compare the coverage offered on the exact model in your location rather than assuming the brands or product categories provide identical terms.
- Workload performance and battery: Look for independent tests of the exact configurations under comparable workloads. No independent cross-platform performance-per-dollar result is established here.
When a Windows laptop may be the better value
Windows is the practical choice when your required software or workflow calls for it, regardless of whether another laptop looks attractive on a specification sheet. It can also be the better deal if a specific Windows model offers the configuration you need at a lower current local price. That conclusion requires comparing actual models and prices; the evidence here does not establish a representative Windows price range.

If Copilot+ features matter to you, confirm that the particular Windows configuration qualifies. Microsoft says Copilot+ PCs require an NPU capable of more than 40 trillion operations per second (TOPS) and documents experiences including Recall, Cocreator, Live Captions, Windows Studio Effects, and automatic super resolution. Eligibility is tied to qualifying device configurations, so a Windows label alone does not mean a laptop supports them. Microsoft’s Copilot+ PC FAQ
When the MacBook Air may be the better value
The Air is easier to justify when macOS is a requirement or when its integration with your Apple devices provides concrete day-to-day value. Apple’s published configuration gives you a defined starting point—M5, 16GB unified memory, and 512GB storage—with larger memory and storage options listed. Whether that is good value depends on the Air’s current price in your market and what a comparable Windows model costs there.

For a U.S. price reference, the March 2026 launch prices were $1,099 for the 13-inch Air and $1,299 for the 15-inch Air, before any later retailer pricing. Treat those figures as historical launch prices, not a current quote. If you are outside the U.S., use local prices and currency rather than converting the launch figures and assuming they reflect your market.
A practical way to make the decision
- Write down non-negotiables. Identify the operating system, applications, peripherals, screen size, memory, and storage your work or study requires.
- Select named candidates. Pick the MacBook Air size and configuration you would actually buy, then choose one or more Windows models that meet the same requirements.
- Check current local checkout prices. Compare prices on the same date and record discounts, refurbished status, and trade-in credit separately.
- Price the complete setup. Include required adapters, hubs, or other accessories, and compare warranty and support terms for each exact model.
- Use comparable evidence for performance and battery. Prefer independent tests that identify the tested configurations and workloads. Do not treat one brand’s maximum battery claim or vendor comparison as a neutral cross-platform result.
- Account for your own ecosystem and workflow. Consider whether Apple-device integration or Windows-specific tools will reduce friction in the way you actually use a laptop. Do not assume a longer lifespan or higher resale value without comparable evidence.
So, which is the better value?
There is no evidence-based universal winner. The MacBook Air is a strong candidate if you want macOS, use Apple-device integration, and find its current price and configuration competitive. A Windows laptop is the better fit when your required software or workflow needs Windows, or when a named Windows model provides the configuration you need for less. Decide by comparing exact models, local prices, and your real workload—not by comparing one Apple product with an undefined category.
