Choose MacBook Neo if your priority is spending less on a Mac for everyday tasks. Choose MacBook Air if you want a larger-screen option, Apple’s M5 chip family, or Thunderbolt/USB 4 ports. The right choice depends on your budget, the configuration you need, and the devices you plan to connect—not just the chip names.

Which MacBook should you buy?
Choose MacBook Neo for everyday use on a tighter budget
Neo is the sensible starting point if your main activities are web browsing, streaming, schoolwork, and ordinary home computing, and the current price in your region makes it meaningfully less expensive than an Air with the storage you need. Apple positions Neo for daily activities including browsing, streaming, photo editing, and creative hobbies. That is Apple’s product description, not an independent performance test.
Apple announced a U.S. launch starting price of $599, or $499 for education, on March 4, 2026. Those are dated launch prices, not a promise of current pricing, eligibility, stock, or pricing outside the United States. See Apple’s MacBook Neo announcement and check local listings before buying.

Choose MacBook Air if screen choice or connectivity matters more
Air is the stronger fit if you want more built-in workspace: its 15.3-inch model has a larger display than either Neo or the 13.6-inch Air. The larger diagonal may be useful when you prefer working without an external monitor; that is a practical inference from the published screen sizes.
Air also fits more naturally into setups that depend on Thunderbolt/USB 4 peripherals, such as compatible docks or fast external storage. Apple lists two Thunderbolt/USB 4 ports for the current M5 Air, compared with Neo’s mix of USB 3 and USB 2 ports.

What do the chip and storage differences mean?
Apple identifies A18 Pro in Neo and M5 in the current Air. The chip families are different, but their names alone do not establish how much faster one laptop will be for a particular task. Apple describes M5 Air as suited to everyday productivity, creative projects, and complex AI tasks; those descriptions are Apple’s positioning, not a head-to-head benchmark.

Configuration matters alongside the chip. Apple’s Neo launch announcement describes its battery-test machine as having an A18 Pro with a 6-core CPU and 5-core GPU, 8GB of unified memory, and a 256GB SSD. Those are details of the test configuration and should not be assumed to describe every retail option. Apple’s March 11, 2026 Air availability announcement says current Air models start with 512GB of storage. Compare the exact memory and storage options on the listings you can buy, especially if you keep large files or applications on the laptop.

Will your accessories work with MacBook Neo?
Neo has two USB-C ports, but they are not equivalent: Apple specifies one USB 3 port on the left and one USB 2 port on the right. External display connectivity is supported only through the USB 3 port. If you use a monitor, dock, audio interface, or external drive, verify its connection and speed requirements before choosing Neo. Air’s two Thunderbolt/USB 4 ports are the more suitable match when your setup specifically depends on that standard.

Apple lists Neo at up to 16 hours of wireless web browsing and up to 16 hours of video streaming; it lists current Air at up to 18 hours of video streaming. These are not identical workloads, so the figures do not prove that Air lasts longer in every situation. Apple says its Neo tests were run in January 2026 on preproduction systems: the web test visited 25 popular websites over Wi-Fi, while the video test streamed 1080p content in Safari over Wi-Fi, with brightness set eight clicks from the bottom. Apple notes that battery life varies by use and configuration.

A practical decision checklist
- Start with your local price: compare available Neo and Air configurations with the storage and memory you actually want. Neo’s $599 U.S. figure was its March 2026 launch price, not a current universal price.
- Pick the display size: Neo is 13.0 inches; Air offers 13.6-inch and 15.3-inch models.
- Check your ports: make sure Neo’s USB 3 port supports the external-display connection you need, or choose Air if your devices require Thunderbolt/USB 4.
- Match storage to your habits: compare the exact SKU rather than assuming the Neo test configuration represents every model.
- Choose for the work you do: Apple positions both for everyday computing, with Air also pitched for broader creative and complex AI workflows. No independent head-to-head performance result is established here, so avoid treating that positioning as a measured speed comparison.
