To make a MacBook Air last longer on a charge, start at Apple menu > System Settings > Battery: enable Low Power Mode when you need it, reduce screen brightness, and review Battery history to spot patterns. Close apps and disconnect peripherals you are not using. Optimized Battery Charging and Charge Limit serve a different purpose: they help manage long-term battery aging rather than add runtime to the current charge.
Use Low Power Mode when you need more runtime
Open Apple menu > System Settings > Battery, then choose Low Power Mode. Apple says Low Power Mode reduces energy use to increase battery life. The effect on runtime depends on how you use your Mac; Apple does not publish a guaranteed number of extra hours or a percentage improvement.

On macOS Ventura or later, Energy Mode controls can be selected separately for battery and power-adapter use. Set Low Power Mode for battery use when conserving energy matters. Reduce brightness to the lowest level that remains comfortable for your work. The display is a setting you can adjust directly, and Apple’s MacBook Air guide to optimizing battery life recommends lowering it to conserve power.

Use Battery history to look for patterns
In System Settings > Battery, review the available history to see battery level and screen-on usage over the past 24 hours, as well as energy usage and screen-on usage over the past 10 days. Look for times when energy use rises or screen-on time is especially high, then consider what you were doing at those times.
History can help you identify patterns, but it is not a guaranteed diagnosis of every cause of battery drain. The view and information available depend on the Mac and macOS version. See Apple’s Battery settings guide for details.

Close unused apps and unplug peripherals you do not need
- Quit apps you are no longer using, especially if they are doing work in the background.
- Disconnect external devices that are not needed for the task.
Apple includes both steps among its basic ways to conserve MacBook Air power. They are practical checks when you want to reduce unnecessary energy use without changing your setup permanently. Apple’s MacBook Air battery guidance covers these measures.
Keep charging features separate from runtime settings
Optimized Battery Charging helps manage battery aging
Optimized Battery Charging learns your charging routine. When it predicts that your Mac will remain connected to power for an extended period, it may delay charging past 80%, then aims to finish charging before you unplug. Its purpose is to reduce battery aging over time—not to increase the hours available on the current charge. Apple’s MacBook Air guide describes how the feature works.

Charge Limit is for eligible Macs often connected to power
Apple’s April 2026 guidance says Charge Limit requires an Apple silicon Mac running macOS Tahoe 26.4 or later. For eligible Macs, the selectable limit is from 80% to 100%. It is a battery-lifespan option for people who often leave their Mac connected to power, not a way to extend runtime from the charge you already have. - You need more time away from an outlet now: use Low Power Mode for battery use, lower brightness, quit unused apps, and unplug unneeded devices.
- You want to understand a recurring drain: use Battery history to examine recent energy usage and screen-on patterns.
- Your Mac spends long periods plugged in: use Optimized Battery Charging, and consider Charge Limit if your Mac meets Apple’s stated model and macOS requirements.
Menu options are not identical across every MacBook Air or macOS release. If a setting is missing, check Apple’s documentation for your model and installed macOS version rather than assuming the feature is available on all Macs.
