To check whether your PC meets a game’s GPU requirements, find the exact graphics-card model in Windows, then compare it with the game’s current official requirements—including VRAM and the stated resolution or performance target. Treat the result as a compatibility and planning estimate, not a promise of a particular frame rate.
1. Find the GPU model installed in your PC
- Open Start, search for Device Manager, and open it.
- Expand Display adapters and record the complete name of each listed adapter. Microsoft gives this as a way to identify your GPU in its GPU identification guidance.
If more than one adapter appears, your PC has multiple GPUs. This is common on laptops: integrated graphics may handle lighter tasks while a discrete GPU handles heavier work, and the system may switch between them to balance performance and power use. See Microsoft’s overview of GPUs. A listed discrete GPU is not necessarily the adapter a game is using at a given moment, so check the game’s graphics settings or your PC manufacturer’s guidance if performance seems unexpectedly low.

2. Find the requirements for the exact game and PC edition
Use the game developer’s or publisher’s support page, or its official store listing. Check that the requirements apply to the PC version and the edition or storefront you own. Requirements can change after updates, so use the current page rather than relying on an old screenshot or a specification copied to another site. Microsoft likewise recommends checking the developer’s website for a specific game’s GPU requirements in its GPU guidance.

If the publisher lists resolution, frame rate, graphics preset, or VRAM beside a GPU tier, treat those details as part of the target—not as optional footnotes. “Recommended” is not a universal guarantee that every scene will hold a particular frame rate.

3. Compare the GPU, form factor, and VRAM
Compare the complete GPU designation, not just a family name. Similar names can cover different performance tiers, and a laptop GPU is not automatically equivalent to a desktop card with a similar name. Capcom cautions that mobile GPUs may perform substantially worse than desktop GPUs meeting the same named requirement in its Steam FAQ.
When comparing your PC with a game’s listed target, check these factors together:
Rank #2
- Powered by the NVIDIA Blackwell architecture and DLSS 4
- Powered by GeForce RTX 5070 Ti
- Integrated with 16GB GDDR7 256bit memory interface
- PCIe 5.0
- WINDFORCE cooling system
| What to compare | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Exact GPU model | Full vendor and model designation, including suffixes | A broad GPU family name can include cards with different performance levels. |
| Form factor | Desktop card or laptop GPU | Mobile and desktop versions can perform differently, even when their names look similar. |
| VRAM | Your GPU’s dedicated video memory versus the game’s stated amount | Some game requirements specify a VRAM floor. A matching VRAM number alone does not establish matching performance. |
| Performance target | Minimum or recommended tier, plus any listed resolution, frame rate, or preset | A GPU tier may be associated with a specific experience rather than every settings combination. |
| API and operating system | Required DirectX version and supported Windows version | These are separate compatibility checks; they do not measure raw GPU performance. |
For a GPU the game page does not name, a GPU hierarchy or benchmark can be a rough comparison aid, but it is not an official equivalency chart. Compare like-for-like desktop or laptop parts, account for VRAM, and look for independent results for the same game and similar settings. Drivers, game settings, GPU generation, and laptop power limits can all affect the outcome.
4. Read the stated target, not just the GPU name
Publisher specifications can tie a GPU recommendation to a particular resolution and preset. For example, Square Enix’s PC Steam specifications list Radeon RX 460 and GeForce GTX 750 for minimum, alongside a stated target of 60 FPS at 1280×720 on Low and 2 GB VRAM. Its recommended line names Radeon RX 470, Intel Arc A750, and GeForce GTX 1060 6GB, alongside 60 FPS at 1920×1080 on Highest. Those are specifications for that game, not a general ranking or performance promise for other titles.

- A 2.5-slot design maximizes compatibility and cooling efficiency for superior performance in small chassis
Requirements can also include title-specific warnings. Capcom’s Steam FAQ says operation with onboard graphics and devices that share VRAM with main memory is not guaranteed; it also warns that mobile GPUs meeting listed requirements may not run properly because their performance can be substantially lower than regular desktop GPUs. Its resolution and frame-rate estimates are specific to that title, and it notes that performance can drop in graphics-intensive scenes.
5. Check the rest of the PC separately
Meeting a game’s GPU requirement does not establish that the whole PC meets its requirements. Check the CPU, system memory, storage, Windows version, and any API requirements listed by the publisher.

To check the DirectX version installed in Windows, search Start for dxdiag, open the DirectX Diagnostic Tool, and inspect the System tab. Microsoft explains that DxDiag reports information about installed DirectX components and drivers in its DirectX instructions; its page on which DirectX version is on your PC also describes checking the version. Having a particular DirectX version does not, by itself, show that your GPU can deliver the performance you want. Windows 11’s general DirectX 12 compatibility requirement is an operating-system requirement, not a pass mark for every game; see Windows 11 system requirements.
What to do if your GPU falls short
If your GPU is below the game’s listed target, first decide whether you are comparing against minimum or recommended settings and whether the publisher gives a lower-resolution or lower-preset target. Do not infer a specific frame rate from a model-name comparison alone.

Before considering an upgrade, confirm that your particular computer supports one. Desktop discrete GPUs are separate cards, while laptop graphics may be integrated into the motherboard or use an external GPU over a suitable port. The available upgrade path depends on the PC’s design; a desktop card is not a universal fit for every desktop, and laptops generally do not accept a conventional internal graphics-card swap. Microsoft outlines these distinctions in its GPU overview.
