The MacBook Air M5’s most concrete differences from the M4 are 512GB of standard storage instead of 256GB, Apple’s claim of a faster SSD, Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6, and higher memory bandwidth. Apple also advertises gains in selected AI and creative workloads. The two generations otherwise share much of the same foundation, including 13- and 15-inch sizes, Liquid Retina displays, 12MP Center Stage cameras and battery life rated up to 18 hours.

Storage is the clearest everyday upgrade
The M4 launched with 256GB of baseline storage; the M5 starts at 512GB and can be configured up to 4TB. That extra room can matter if you keep a large photo library, video projects, games or other files on the laptop rather than relying on cloud storage or an external drive.

Apple says the M5 SSD offers 2x faster read/write performance than the previous generation. Treat that as a manufacturer comparison, not a guarantee that every app or file transfer will feel twice as fast. The storage capacity difference is more straightforward: compare the configuration you would actually buy, since the M5’s 512GB standard is not the only possible configuration.

Wireless changes matter most with compatible gear
M5 moves to Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6, while M4 supports Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3. The M5’s N1 chip enables its newer wireless standards. Those specifications may matter if your network and connected devices support them; the version numbers alone do not ensure a noticeable improvement with older equipment or a particular internet connection.
What Apple claims about M5 performance
Both models have a 10-core CPU and can be configured with up to a 10-core GPU. M5 adds Neural Accelerators in each GPU core and has 153GB/s memory bandwidth. Apple says that bandwidth is 28% higher than M4, and claims M5 delivers up to 4x faster performance for AI tasks versus M4.

Apple also cites up to 1.9x faster AI video enhancement in Topaz Video and up to 1.5x faster Blender ray-traced 3D rendering compared with M4. These are Apple-published, workload-specific claims, not independent benchmark results or a promise of the same gain in other software. The practical difference depends on the apps you use and the memory configuration you choose.
John Ternus, Apple’s senior vice president of Hardware Engineering, described M5 as faster for AI in Apple’s March 3, 2026 announcement. That is Apple’s characterization of its product, rather than an independent test conclusion.

Size, screen, battery and camera are familiar
Both generations come in 13- and 15-inch versions with Liquid Retina displays. Choose between them mainly by how you balance portability and screen area: the smaller model is easier to carry, while the larger one offers more workspace. The generation change does not, by itself, make one size the better fit.
Apple rates both generations for up to 18 hours of battery life. This is a stated maximum, not a guarantee for every workload or usage pattern. Both have a 12MP Center Stage camera; M5 adds Desk View. The M5 announcement also specifies two Thunderbolt 4 ports and support for up to two external displays. Check Apple’s current technical specifications if a particular port or monitor setup is essential.

Which MacBook Air should you choose?
Choose M5 if you are buying new and value the changes
- You want 512GB of standard storage instead of the M4’s 256GB launch baseline.
- You use, or expect to use, a Wi-Fi 7 network and compatible Bluetooth devices.
- Your work includes the AI, graphics or creative tasks Apple identifies, and the stated performance claims are relevant to your apps.
- You want the newer generation and have compared its actual configured price with the available M4 option.
Consider M4 if the configuration and current price suit you
An M4 may still fit well if its storage, memory, wireless support and performance meet your needs. Whether it is the better purchase depends on the current price gap and the configuration available to you. Apple’s U.S. launch prices in March 2025 were $999 for the 13-inch M4 and $1,199 for the 15-inch M4; those historical prices are not current price guidance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIf you already own an M4
There is no automatic reason to upgrade based on the model number alone. Consider M5 if more standard storage, newer wireless standards or the specific performance improvements Apple claims would solve a real limitation in your current setup. If your M4 already handles your work and the differences would go unused, the generational change may not justify replacing it.

Check your configuration and the real price gap
- Compare like with like. Note the screen size, unified memory and storage on each configuration. The M4 announcement gives a 16GB starting unified-memory figure and support up to 32GB; compare the actual memory offered on the models you are considering.
- Match specs to your workload. Identify whether your main constraint is local storage, wireless compatibility, memory-heavy work or a specific app’s performance—not simply whether one chip is newer.
- Verify the current offer. Compare current retailer listings for the exact size and configuration. The launch prices above describe the M4’s U.S. introduction, not today’s deals, and no current transaction prices are established here.
- Confirm connections you depend on. Check the current specification page for your required ports and external-display arrangement before buying.
