For the current MacBook Air lineup, the main choice is between a lighter 13-inch M5 and a larger-screen 15-inch M5—not between different chip generations. Choose the 13-inch model if lower carry weight and a smaller footprint matter most; choose the 15-inch if you regularly want more room for documents and multiple windows. Then match memory and SSD capacity to the apps and files you actually keep on the Mac.
What is different between the 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Air?
Both current sizes use Apple’s M5 chip, but they differ in screen size, weight, and some GPU configuration details. Apple lists the following specifications for its 2026 models:

Choose 13 inches for easier carrying
At 2.7 pounds, the 13-inch model weighs 0.6 pounds less than the 15-inch version. That difference matters most if the laptop travels with you frequently or you work in places where desk space is limited. The trade-off is a smaller built-in display, which can make side-by-side windows and long documents feel more constrained.

Choose 15 inches for a larger built-in workspace
The 15-inch model’s 15.3-inch display gives documents, timelines, and multiple windows more room without relying on an external monitor. Its weight is 3.3 pounds, so decide whether that larger screen is worth carrying the additional 0.6 pounds compared with the 13-inch model.
Which MacBook Air M5 chip configuration should you choose?
There is no current 13-inch-versus-15-inch choice between M4 and M5 in Apple’s listed lineup: both sizes use M5. Apple specifies a 10-core CPU for each. The configuration distinction to notice is graphics: the 13-inch model may be offered with an 8-core or 10-core GPU, while Apple’s 15-inch specifications list a 10-core GPU.

That specification alone does not establish how much faster one configuration will be for a particular task. If your work depends heavily on graphics or media processing, compare the exact configurations Apple offers and look for testing that matches your apps and workload. For general use, the size, memory, and storage decisions are more directly useful than treating the chip name as a reason to buy one screen size over the other.
How much unified memory do you need?
Apple lists 16GB, 24GB, and 32GB unified-memory configurations. Unified memory is the working memory the Mac uses while apps and projects are active; it is separate from SSD capacity, which stores files. Apple’s configuration list shows what you can buy, not a universal amount every buyer needs.

- 16GB: Consider it if your normal use is mostly everyday browsing, office work, video calls, and a modest number of open apps.
- 24GB: Consider stepping up if you routinely keep many demanding apps or large projects active at once.
- 32GB: Consider it for sustained, memory-intensive workflows where your current workload would benefit from more working headroom.
These are workload-based decision points, not guarantees that a particular capacity is required or sufficient. Think about what you run simultaneously and whether your projects are likely to grow; choose a configuration against that actual pattern rather than buying the largest option by default.
How much SSD storage should you buy?
Apple lists internal SSD options from 512GB to 4TB. Choose based on the amount of space you want available locally for apps, active projects, photos, and files you need offline. Someone who keeps a large media library or several substantial projects on the laptop may value more internal capacity than someone who routinely moves completed work elsewhere.

- Estimate the space your current apps and files occupy, then account for the projects and offline files you expect to keep.
- Favor more internal capacity if you want those files readily available without carrying an accessory or managing storage frequently.
- Use an external SSD as an optional place for additional files or backups, not as a substitute for unified memory.
The Air has two Thunderbolt 4/USB-C ports and MagSafe 3 charging. Apple says its ports support accessories and external displays; a device with a mismatched connector may require an adapter. An external SSD is useful for extra file space, while a USB-C hub or dock can help connect several wired peripherals at a desk. What battery life does Apple claim?
Apple rates the MacBook Air for up to 18 hours of video streaming and up to 15 hours of wireless web use. These are Apple’s stated figures, not guaranteed runtimes for every person: Apple notes that actual battery life varies with use and configuration. Treat them as manufacturer estimates rather than a promise about demanding workloads or your personal day.

Which configuration makes sense for your use?
- Frequent travel and everyday tasks: Start with the 13-inch model if minimizing weight and footprint is the priority, then choose memory and SSD capacity according to your apps and local files.
- More room for windows and documents: Choose the 15-inch model if the larger built-in display will help your regular work and its extra carry weight is acceptable.
- Large active projects: Consider a higher memory configuration if several demanding apps or large projects are open together; consider more SSD storage if those projects also need to stay on the Mac.
- Desk-based work with wired gear: Either size can connect accessories through its Thunderbolt 4/USB-C ports; an optional hub or dock may suit a setup with several peripherals.
Apple’s Mac comparison page frames the choice as “Which laptop is right for you?” For the Air, answer that by weighing where you use it, how much screen space you need, and what your real workload and file collection demand.
