For most demanding creative, development, photography, and music-production work, start by pricing Mac Studio with M5 Max. Choose M5 Ultra when you can point to a specific need for substantially more unified memory, GPU capacity, internal storage, or support for up to eight external displays. Apple’s U.S. starting prices are $2,499 for M5 Max and $5,499 for M5 Ultra; your configured price varies with memory, storage, and region.
What changes between M5 Max and M5 Ultra?
The main buying difference is capacity, not a universal promise that every task will run faster. M5 Ultra has higher maximum CPU and GPU configurations, more memory and SSD capacity, and support for more external displays. M5 Max already offers substantial professional connectivity and can be configured with up to 128GB of unified memory and an 8TB SSD.

Which workloads fit M5 Max?
M5 Max is the sensible first configuration to price for demanding work that does not exceed its memory, storage, graphics, or display limits. Apple identifies musicians, photographers, software engineers, and designers as likely users. It also includes hardware acceleration for H.264, HEVC, ProRes, ProRes RAW, and AV1 decode.

- A POWERFUL PLATFORM FOR AI — Apple silicon, and every major component that powers it, is designed to run demanding AI workflows like running huge LLMs, directly on device.
- Photography and design: Consider the size of your active files and the number of applications you routinely keep open. Choose memory based on that workload rather than buying the largest option by default.
- Software development: Evaluate memory needs from the tools and workloads you actually run concurrently, such as builds, simulators, containers, or virtual machines.
- Music production: Base the configuration on the size of your sessions, sample libraries, and other applications used at the same time.
- Video work: M5 Max is a candidate when its available GPU, media acceleration, memory, and display capacity fit your editing and finishing workflow.
Apple lists M5 Max with 460GB/s memory bandwidth in its base GPU configuration and 614GB/s with the configurable 40-core GPU. Those specifications describe the chip configurations, not a performance guarantee for any particular app.
When is M5 Ultra worth considering?
Consider M5 Ultra when a real project is constrained by the capacity M5 Max can offer. Apple positions it for work such as real-time grading of uncompressed 8K footage, complex visual-effects rendering, expansive local AI models, and large datasets. Its 512GB maximum unified-memory option was announced for late October 2026, so availability may differ from the other configurations as of October 7.

- M5 Max 18C CPU - 40C GPU CHIP—Tap into breakthrough performance with a next-generation CPU, a more powerful GPU with third-generation ray tracing, and a Neural Accelerator built into each GPU core.
- MEMORY— 48GB unified memory so you can quickly access large media files or accelerate tasks for AI workloads.
- STORAGE— 1TB solid state drive storage capacity.
- Choose Ultra if your project needs more than M5 Max’s maximum 128GB unified memory or 8TB internal SSD.
- Consider it if your work can use a higher GPU ceiling, such as complex rendering or other workloads that scale with GPU capacity.
- It may fit a workstation that needs more than five external displays, subject to Apple’s resolution and refresh-rate limits.
- Its front Thunderbolt 5 ports may be useful when you frequently connect high-speed devices at the front of the computer.
Apple reports up to 4.3x peak AI compute performance and up to 1.3x higher multithreaded performance for M5 Ultra versus M3 Ultra, based on Apple testing conducted in July 2026. These are Apple’s selected-workload comparisons, not independent cross-platform benchmarks or a prediction for your application.

How much unified memory should you choose?
Unified memory is shared across the system’s CPU and GPU, so capacity matters when applications and project data need to remain available together. Start with the largest projects and the heaviest combination of applications you actually use; do not choose Ultra simply because its maximum is larger.
- Identify your most memory-intensive workload and the applications you keep open alongside it.
- Check whether your typical projects fit within the M5 Max options of 36GB, 48GB, 64GB, or 128GB.
- If the workload requires more than 128GB, compare the M5 Ultra options of 256GB and 512GB, and verify whether the selected option is currently orderable.
- When the requirement is uncertain, avoid paying for a capacity you cannot connect to a specific workload; memory is a configuration choice to assess before purchase.
How much internal storage do you need?
Estimate the space needed for active projects, frequently used media, sample libraries, applications, and files you want available without an external drive. M5 Max offers 512GB, 1TB, 2TB, 4TB, and 8TB options; M5 Ultra offers 1TB, 2TB, 4TB, 8TB, and 16TB options.

Thunderbolt 5 can connect external storage, hubs, and PCIe expansion chassis. External storage can suit archived material or active files in workflows designed around fast external drives, but it does not automatically replace internal capacity: consider where files must reside and how your applications access them.

Both models have four rear Thunderbolt 5 ports, two rear USB-A ports, HDMI 2.1, 10Gb Ethernet, and a headphone jack. Their front USB ports differ: M5 Max has two USB-C ports rated up to 10Gb/s, while M5 Ultra has two Thunderbolt 5 ports rated up to 120Gb/s. Mac Studio does not include a display, keyboard, or mouse; Apple lists the computer and power cord in the box. Include any needed screen or input devices in your setup budget.
Is Mac Studio overkill for your work?
It may be. The Mac Studio is most compelling when you need a desktop workstation’s performance, ports, memory ceiling, or multi-display support. If your workload does not use those capabilities, compare the Studio’s configured total—including any display and peripherals you need—with less powerful Mac options before buying. The evidence here does not establish a performance or value advantage for every user or application.
How to choose your configuration
- Price M5 Max first for your workload, with enough memory and storage for your current projects.
- Move to M5 Ultra only for a defined constraint: more than 128GB memory, more than 8TB internal storage, a workload that can use its higher GPU ceiling, or a display arrangement beyond M5 Max’s support.
- Check ports and display limits against the exact devices and monitors you plan to connect.
- Compare configured totals on Apple’s live buy page for your country; the figures above are U.S. starting prices and may change by region or configuration.
Apple announced the M5 Max and M5 Ultra Mac Studio on August 25, 2026, and said the systems were available in a September 22 update. Its performance claims are manufacturer-reported, not independent test results. See Apple’s announcement for the stated comparisons and availability context.
