To move data from an old Android phone to a new Google Pixel, use the guided transfer during Pixel setup: pair the phones, unlock the old one when prompted, then choose what to copy. You can connect them with a data-capable cable or transfer wirelessly; a cable is optional. The exact screens vary by Pixel generation.
Choose a cable or wireless transfer
Google says cable and wireless transfer support the same data, so choose based on the connection you can use and the setup flow shown on your Pixel.

| Method | What you need | When it makes sense |
|---|---|---|
| Cable | A cable that supports data transfer and fits both phones; an adapter may be needed if the ports differ. | Use it if you have a compatible cable and prefer a direct connection. |
| Wireless | Both phones, a nearby connection, and Wi-Fi. Older-model instructions specify Android 5 or later on the old phone and Android 12 or later on the Pixel. | Use it if you do not have a suitable cable. Keep the phones close and connected to strong Wi-Fi. |
Google’s Pixel transfer instructions cover the current setup flow. Its Android setup guidance explains the cable and wireless options. Check the phones’ ports before choosing a cable or adapter.

- Charge both devices, keep them near each other, and connect to strong Wi-Fi.
- Check that the Pixel has enough free storage. Google warns that a full device can pause a transfer.
- Sync apps with your Google Account, save passwords and passkeys where you can access them on the new phone, and back up important data.
- On the old phone, update Google Messages and set it as the default messaging app. If messages are stored on the SIM, move them to the phone’s main storage if needed.
These checks follow Google’s transfer preparation guidance.

Transfer during Pixel setup
Pixel 8 and later
- Turn on the new Pixel and begin setup. When asked, choose the option to copy apps and data from an Android phone or Pixel.
- Follow the on-screen pairing instructions. Google’s current instructions describe a QR-code flow; respond to the setup notification on the old phone when it appears.
- Unlock the old phone with its screen lock when prompted, then connect the phones wirelessly or with a data-capable USB-C cable. If the connection requires it, use a compatible adapter or Quick Switch Adapter.
- Review the data categories and select what you want to copy. Keep both phones connected and nearby while the transfer runs.
Follow the screens on your own devices rather than assuming every Pixel model displays the same prompts. Google’s Pixel setup instructions describe the model-specific flow.
Pixel Fold, Pixel 7 Pro, and earlier
These models use a different setup flow from Pixel 8 and later. Google’s instructions provide cable and Wi-Fi paths; follow the prompts for your model. For the older-model wireless path, the old phone must run Android 5 or later and the Pixel Android 12 or later. Google’s Pixel transfer page has the relevant steps.

What transfers—and what may not
Google lists Google Accounts, device settings, calendar events, text messages and attachments, files and folders, photos and videos, contacts, call history, WhatsApp chat history, audio files, and apps among the data that can transfer. Eligibility depends on where the information is stored and which service or app manages it.

- Google Keep notes and Google Password Manager credentials are associated with Google services, so make sure you use the relevant Google Account on the Pixel.
- Apps transfer when they were downloaded or purchased through Google Play. Some apps may take time to download and install, so their icons or content may appear later.
- Data in apps made specifically for another phone manufacturer may not transfer. Do not assume an app’s private data or settings will move just because the app itself is available.
See Google’s list of transferable data and qualifications for details.
Finish the transfer after setup or restore without the old phone
Add data after initial setup
On Pixel 9 and later, Google says you can transfer additional data after setup through Settings > Accounts and backup > Android Switch. This can also help if the initial transfer stopped before everything was copied. Follow the prompts and check that the Pixel has enough available storage.
Restore from a Google Account backup
If the old phone is unavailable, you can restore from an existing Google Account backup during Pixel setup. Sign in with the same account and choose the available backup when the setup process offers it. What you can recover depends on what was backed up.

- The transfer pauses or stops: Check the Pixel’s free storage and confirm the phones remain connected and nearby. If you have a Pixel 9 or later, use Android Switch after setup to add data.
- Messages are missing: Update Google Messages on the old phone, make it the default messaging app, and check whether older messages are stored on the SIM rather than in the phone’s main storage.
- An app or its content is not there yet: Give Google Play downloads time to finish. Also check whether the app was obtained through Google Play and whether its data is managed by a manufacturer-specific app.
- The cable will not connect: Verify the ports on both phones and use a cable that supports data, not just charging. If the connectors differ, a compatible adapter may be needed.
