Apple documents removable SSD modules in both the Mac Studio with M5 Max or M5 Ultra and the 2024 Mac mini with M4 or M4 Pro. So the distinction is not that one product has a swappable SSD and the other does not: it is the model-specific repair procedure, module configuration, and restoration required afterward. Removable also does not mean a standard M.2 drive—or an easy, officially supported capacity upgrade—will work.
Which Mac models have documented removable SSD modules?
Apple’s service instructions cover the Mac Studio with M5 Max or M5 Ultra and the Mac mini (2024) with M4 or M4 Pro. Both describe removing an internal SSD module. That evidence does not establish the SSD design of every Mac Studio or Mac mini generation.

Apple’s current US store listing includes Mac mini configurations with M6 and M5 Pro chips, but the 2024 repair procedure does not establish how storage is designed or serviced in those newer models. Their SSD design remains unresolved here; check for documentation specific to the exact model before buying parts or planning a repair.

How do the documented procedures differ?
| Model covered | Access described by Apple | Module configuration | After replacement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mac Studio with M5 Max or M5 Ultra | Remove the bottom cover, power supply, and internal frame before starting the SSD procedure. | Modules must be replaced in pairs, except 512 GB, 1 TB, and 2 TB configurations, which use a single module. Apple warns not to interchange modules because their serial endings correspond to connectors. | Restore the Mac using a separate Mac running the latest macOS. |
| Mac mini (2024) with M4 or M4 Pro | Remove the bottom cover, antenna plate, and fan. Then remove the module screw and pull the module from its connector without tilting it while connected. | The cited procedure describes module removal but does not state a comparable single-versus-paired configuration rule. | Restore the Mac using a separate Mac running the latest macOS. |
Apple’s Studio instructions also identify an adjustable torque wrench, nylon probe, and Torx T8 bit for the procedure. The mini guide warns that damage to the SSD connector requires logic board replacement. These are substantial disassembly procedures, not equivalent to swapping a drive in an external enclosure.
#1 Best Overall
- Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
- Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
- Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
- Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C
Does removable mean you can install a larger SSD?
Not necessarily. Apple’s service procedures show that the module can be removed and replaced, but they do not establish that a higher-capacity upgrade is straightforward or officially supported. Treat this as a model-specific service repair, not a general invitation to increase storage by fitting any drive that physically seems to fit.
For the 2024 Mac mini, iFixit’s replacement guide says ordinary M.2 SSDs are incompatible because the storage controller is integrated into the Apple Silicon SoC. A replacement therefore needs to be specifically compatible with the exact Mac model; a generic M.2 SSD is not an appropriate internal substitute.

- Capacity Display Variance: 500GB external ssd often appears as around 465GB on Windows. MacOS can show full 500 GB capacity. This is binary calculation difference and doesn’t affect SSD hard drive actual physical storage
- 1050 MB/s Speed: Instantly access to your files with blazing-fast 10Gbps external SSD read up to 1050MB/s and write up to 1000MB/s. LED Light indicates USB SSD instant activity
- Data Security: Solid state drives S.M.A.R.T. health diagnostics and adaptive TRIM optimizing data block management ensures consistent write speeds and extends the longevity of the portable SSD
- USB-C & USB-A Cable: Both cables featuring rapid USB 3.2 Gen2, this USB SSD effortlessly bridges devices, enabling seamless cross-platform file transfers and backup between computers, smartphones, tablets and iPhone
- Always Fast: No slowdowns for large file transfers. With SLC caching (25% of current available capacity allocated as high-speed cache), this external SSD delivers steady 10Gbps for transfers within the cache capacity
What happens if you replace the module?
In both procedures, Apple requires restoration using a separate Mac running the latest macOS. For the Studio, Apple warns that after SSD module replacement the computer will not start and its status indicator will flash amber until it is restored. That is a repair-state warning, not a statement that replacement is unsupported.
For the Mac mini, handle the module carefully as it leaves the connector: Apple warns against tilting it while it is still connected, and says connector damage requires logic board replacement. The restoration step is part of the documented repair, not an optional finishing step.

- Solid state performance with up to 800MB/s read speeds in a portable drive. (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device, interface, usage conditions and other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Back up your content and memories on a storage solution that fits seamlessly into your mobile lifestyle.
- Take it with you on your adventures—up to two-meter drop protection means this durable drive can take a beating. (Based on internal testing.)
- Secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind thanks to the tough rubber hook.

What to check before a repair
- Identify the exact model and chip; do not apply the 2024 mini guide to newer Mac mini configurations.
- Confirm that the replacement module is compatible with that exact model. Do not assume a standard M.2 SSD will work.
- For the cited Mac Studio configurations, verify whether the storage uses one module or a pair, and preserve the connector-specific module arrangement.
- Plan for the documented disassembly and have access to a separate Mac running the latest macOS for restoration.
