Place the tab inside the case, route its loop through the charging-port opening, seat the phone, then clip on the strap. If the phone or case has a dedicated lanyard hole, use that instead and follow its instructions.
Choose an attachment method that fits your phone and case

These methods are not interchangeable in every setup. Check the case and accessory instructions before installation; a product described as universal may still have fit limits.

Attach a tether tab inside a phone case
- Remove the phone from its case.
- Place the tether tab inside the case, positioning its small loop so it exits through the charging-port opening.
- Lay the tab flat, then return the phone to the case. Confirm that the case closes fully and the tab is not folded or bunched.
- Clip the lanyard or wrist strap to the exposed loop and check that the clip is closed.
Satechi and The Orbit Brand publish versions of this setup. Use the instructions supplied with your particular tab or strap, since products can differ.
Use a dedicated lanyard hole
If the phone or case has a purpose-made hole, thread the small loop through it and pass the strap through that loop, following the device or case guide. Some older phones have such holes; for example, HTC’s instructions for the Desire 530 specify a lanyard loop no thicker than 1 mm. That limit applies to that model only, not to phones generally.

SmallRig also describes attaching its strap directly to a case lanyard hole when one is available. Make sure the hole is intended for a strap and that the connector fits without forcing it.
Check case fit before installing a tether tab
A tether tab exits at the bottom edge of the case, so the case’s shape around the charging port matters. TOIA says its tab is designed for full-coverage cases with a closed bottom and a small charging-port opening; it excludes open-bottom cases and cases with wide port openings.

- Check the tab’s stated case requirements before buying or installing it.
- After installation, confirm that the case sits fully around the phone and the tab lies flat.
- If the bottom is open or the port cutout does not suit the tab, consider a case with a built-in lanyard hole or another accessory whose instructions match your case.
Ringke and SmallRig describe lanyard-hole attachment as an alternative. Verify that any replacement case fits your exact phone model.
Check charging access and connector fit
Because a tether tab’s loop exits through the charging-port opening, charging access depends on the tab, case, cable and phone fitting together. Satechi’s lanyard includes a USB-C cable intended for charging, but that does not establish that every lanyard or tab works with every cable. Follow the product instructions and check that your charging connector seats properly before relying on the setup.

Also confirm that the strap’s clip or connector matches the loop or hole. Some products are removable; others use a particular tether or cable arrangement, so check the supplied product details rather than assuming all straps connect the same way.
Choose a wrist, neck or crossbody strap
- Wrist strap: keeps the phone close to your hand.
- Neck lanyard: carries the phone from the neck and can leave your hands freer.
- Crossbody strap: carries the phone across the body and can also leave your hands freer.
Compare adjustability, whether the phone detaches from the strap, and the connector supplied. These carry-style differences do not establish which option is more comfortable or more protective; the cited product information does not provide independent comparative testing for comfort, strength or drop prevention.

Understand the limits of a phone lanyard
A strap provides a way to carry or tether a phone; it is not a verified guarantee against damage if the phone falls. The cited manufacturer and merchant pages describe installation and fit, but do not establish a universal load rating for tether tabs or lanyards or verify them for climbing, sports or other high-force use.

SmallRig’s product precautions say: “Avoid use during high-intensity sports to prevent accidental drops.” This is a warning specific to SmallRig’s phone wrist strap, not a universal safety standard. Do not treat a lanyard as protective equipment for high-force activities.
