For most Mac users, the Screenshot toolbar is the better first choice. Press Shift-Command-5 and you immediately get the recording controls, area selection, microphone options and save settings in one compact bar. Choose QuickTime Player instead when you want an app-based workflow and the finished movie to open immediately for playback, trimming or sharing.
On modern macOS, QuickTime Player may display the same Screenshot controls after you choose File > New Screen Recording. In that case, the difference is mainly how you enter the recorder and what happens after you stop—not a measurable difference in capture quality.

| Microphone choice | Available in Options. | Available in the recording window. |
| System-audio control | Apple lists Include System Audio for macOS 27 Golden Gate or later, subject to supported hardware and software. | Not separately established in the documented older QuickTime window; availability depends on which controls macOS presents. |
| Mouse-click indicator | Show Mouse Clicks is available in Options. | Show Mouse Clicks in Recording is available in the QuickTime flow. |
| What happens after stopping | The movie can appear as a floating thumbnail and can be opened in QuickTime Player or iMovie. | QuickTime automatically opens the recording for playback, basic editing or sharing. |
| Basic movie editing | Capture interface first; use QuickTime Player or iMovie for further work. | Trim, rearrange, rotate and split clips. |
| Default file location | Choose a destination with Save to; automatic files use a name such as “Screen Recording [date] at [time].mov”. | The documented workflow emphasizes opening the movie after recording rather than specifying a default folder. |
Apple documents both as built-in ways to record the entire screen or a selected portion. Neither requires buying a separate recorder.
What the Screenshot toolbar actually does
The Screenshot toolbar is a system capture panel, not just a still-image tool. Pressing Shift-Command-5 opens controls for screenshots and screen video in the same bar. You can select an entire screen or a portion, choose recording options before you begin, and stop from the menu bar or with Command-Control-Escape.

Recording choices
- Record the entire screen: captures the display selected by the toolbar.
- Record a selected portion: drag the frame around the area you want, then start.
- Record Selected Window: Apple lists this option for macOS Tahoe 26 or later. If it is missing, your macOS version may predate that feature or the option may not be available in the current configuration.
Options before recording
Open Options in the toolbar before pressing Record. Depending on macOS version and hardware, the menu can include a microphone selector, Show Mouse Clicks, a timer and Save to location. Apple also lists Include System Audio for macOS 27 Golden Gate or later, and SDR/HDR format choices on supported Mac models running macOS Tahoe 26 or later.
Those version labels matter. A guide written for one macOS release can show controls that do not appear on another. If you do not see system-audio, selected-window or HDR choices, first check your macOS version and whether your Mac model supports the feature instead of assuming the recorder is malfunctioning.
Stopping and naming the file
Stop from the recording indicator in the menu bar, or press Command-Control-Escape. When automatic saving is used, macOS normally names the movie in the form Screen Recording [date] at [time].mov. The Save to option lets you choose the destination before recording, which is useful when you need every capture in a project folder rather than in the system’s chosen default.

- Press Shift-Command-5.
- Choose the video icon for recording the entire screen or a selected portion. On macOS Tahoe 26 or later, choose Record Selected Window when that control is available.
- Open Options.
- Choose a microphone if you need narration. Turn on Show Mouse Clicks when viewers must see where you click.
- Set a timer if you need time to prepare, and choose a Save to location.
- If your Mac and macOS version support it, enable Include System Audio. Apple lists this control for macOS 27 Golden Gate or later.
- For a selected portion, drag the frame to the required area. Check that menus, dialog boxes or browser tabs you intend to show are inside the frame.
- Start recording.
- When finished, click the stop control in the menu bar or press Command-Control-Escape.
- Open the floating thumbnail, or open the saved .mov file in QuickTime Player or iMovie if you need to review or edit it.
This is the shortest route for a one-off demonstration, bug report or tutorial because the capture controls are visible without first launching a media player.

How to record with QuickTime Player
- Open QuickTime Player.
- Choose File > New Screen Recording, or press Control-Command-N.
- Inspect the window that appears. On modern macOS, it may be the Screenshot-style control bar. Apple says that when those controls appear, Screenshot is performing the recording even though QuickTime was the entry point.
- If the older QuickTime Screen Recording window appears, choose a microphone and adjust monitoring volume. You can also enable Show Mouse Clicks in Recording.
- Click the screen to record the entire display, or drag over an area and choose Start Recording.
- Stop from the menu bar control when you are done.
- Use the movie that opens automatically for playback, trimming, rearranging, rotating, splitting or sharing.
Apple advises lowering the monitoring volume or using headphones with a microphone if you hear feedback. Feedback happens when the microphone picks up audio being played through speakers, so changing the monitoring setup before you start is easier than repairing the soundtrack later.
Does QuickTime use the same screen recorder as Command-Shift-5?
Usually, the important distinction is the entry point. The Screenshot shortcut is correctly written as Shift-Command-5; some people describe the same shortcut as Command-Shift-5. When QuickTime’s New Screen Recording command opens the Screenshot-style controls, macOS is using Screenshot to perform the capture. QuickTime is serving as the launch point and then as the place where the finished movie opens.
If an older QuickTime Screen Recording window appears instead, you are seeing the legacy QuickTime workflow. The controls and audio choices can differ from the Screenshot toolbar. Therefore, do not assume that two Macs will show identical menus simply because both users chose New Screen Recording.
Audio: microphone, system sound and feedback
Recording your voice
Both documented workflows let you choose a microphone. In Screenshot, open Options and select the input before recording. In QuickTime’s recording window, select a microphone and adjust monitoring volume. A headset with a microphone can help when you need to monitor sound without feeding speaker output back into the microphone.

Recording the Mac’s system audio
Apple lists Include System Audio as an option for macOS 27 Golden Gate or later. The control is also subject to supported hardware and the version of macOS installed. The available data does not establish a universal system-audio option for every earlier release or for every QuickTime window, so check the controls actually shown on your Mac.
If system audio is absent, do not substitute microphone recording and expect the same result: a microphone captures sound in the room, while system-audio capture records audio generated by the Mac. For a tutorial that needs both narration and application sound, verify that your version exposes both the microphone and system-audio controls before you begin.
Preventing feedback
- Lower QuickTime’s monitoring volume before recording.
- Use headphones when monitoring through a microphone.
- Keep the microphone away from speakers.
- Make a short test recording and play it back before recording a long presentation.
How to record one window on a Mac
The documented Screenshot method is version-dependent. Apple lists Record Selected Window in macOS Tahoe 26 or later. Press Shift-Command-5, open the recording controls and look for that option. Select the target window and start recording.

QuickTime’s documented steps describe clicking the screen for full-screen capture or dragging an area before choosing Start Recording. They do not establish a separate window-tracking command in every QuickTime version. If QuickTime opens the Screenshot controls, use the window option there when your macOS release provides it.
Where does a Mac screen recording save?
With Screenshot, the answer is controlled by the Save to setting in Options. Choose the destination before you press Record. Automatically saved movies normally receive a name such as “Screen Recording [date] at [time].mov”. A floating thumbnail may appear after you stop; opening it takes you to the recording for review.
QuickTime’s documented advantage is immediate opening rather than a stated default folder. After you stop, QuickTime opens the movie so you can play, edit or share it. If a predictable project folder matters more than automatic opening, set the destination in the Screenshot toolbar and launch recording with Shift-Command-5, even if you plan to do the editing in QuickTime afterward.

What QuickTime can do
QuickTime Player’s movie tools cover common cleanup jobs: trim unwanted material from the beginning or end, rearrange clips, rotate the movie and split it into multiple clips. These are useful for removing a long pause or separating a demonstration into sections, but they are basic movie edits rather than a full nonlinear editing system.

What Screenshot can do
Screenshot is principally the capture interface. Its completed recording can be opened from the floating thumbnail or opened in QuickTime Player or iMovie for additional work. If your only requirement is capture, adding an editor is unnecessary; if you need cuts or clip rearrangement, QuickTime is the more direct next step because the movie opens there automatically.
Protected apps and recording limits
Apple warns that some applications, including Apple TV, may not allow their windows to be recorded. A blank, black or missing window is therefore not proof that the Screenshot toolbar or QuickTime is broken. The restriction can come from the application or its content-protection rules.
When a protected window is involved, test recording with an ordinary app such as a document or browser window. If ordinary content records correctly while the protected app does not, the limitation is application-specific. Do not promise viewers that every window can be captured simply because the recorder can capture the desktop.

Choose Screenshot when
- You need to start quickly with one keyboard shortcut.
- You want capture mode, microphone, mouse-click, timer and save controls in one visible toolbar.
- You are making a one-off screen recording and do not need an editor to open automatically.
- You want to choose a destination before recording.
- Your Mac provides newer options such as selected-window recording, system audio or SDR/HDR choices and you want to access them directly.
Choose QuickTime Player when
- You prefer to begin from an application menu rather than a global shortcut.
- You want the finished movie to open immediately for playback.
- You expect to trim, rearrange, rotate or split the recording right away.
- You need QuickTime’s microphone and monitoring-volume controls in the older recording window.
- You are already working in QuickTime and do not want to switch apps after capturing.
Use both together when
A practical workflow is to start with Shift-Command-5 for the clearest capture options, save to the required folder, then open the .mov in QuickTime for basic edits. The reverse also works: launch from QuickTime, use the Screenshot controls if they appear, and let QuickTime open the result automatically.
Common problems and fixes
The shortcut does nothing
- Press the keys together: Shift, Command and 5.
- Try opening Screenshot from the Mac’s capture controls rather than relying on a remembered menu path.
- If you use QuickTime instead, open File > New Screen Recording or press Control-Command-N.
There is no microphone in the recording
- Open Screenshot Options and choose the intended microphone before starting.
- In QuickTime, choose the microphone in the recording window.
- Make a short test clip and verify the audio before recording the full session.
The system sound option is missing
Apple lists Include System Audio for macOS 27 Golden Gate or later. Check the installed macOS release and Mac hardware support. Earlier versions or unsupported models may not show that control.
The recording shows the wrong area
- For Screenshot, recheck whether you chose entire screen, selected portion or selected window.
- For a selected portion, position the frame before starting and keep important controls inside it.
- If a window moves, a fixed selected portion will not follow it unless your version provides the selected-window option.
The movie is silent or has feedback
- Confirm the microphone choice before recording.
- Lower monitoring volume in QuickTime.
- Use headphones with a microphone to prevent speaker output from re-entering the microphone.
- If you expected application audio, verify that Include System Audio is available and enabled; microphone capture alone will not record the Mac’s internal output reliably.
An app window is missing or black
Try recording a normal document or browser window. Some apps, including Apple TV, may prohibit recording, so the restriction can be intentional.
Bottom line
Start with the Screenshot toolbar: Shift-Command-5 is the fastest, most discoverable route and exposes the main capture choices in one place. Pick QuickTime Player when immediate playback and basic editing are more important than the shortest launch path. On current macOS, both routes may lead to the same Screenshot recording controls, making the real choice one of workflow and post-recording handling rather than image quality.
