Mac mini YouTube Livestream Stops After macOS Update: How to Diagnose and Fix It

Find where a Mac mini YouTube livestream fails after a macOS update, then troubleshoot encoder authentication, OBS disconnects, network stability, or firewall access.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If your Mac mini YouTube livestream stops after a macOS update, the timing alone does not prove the update caused it. First find where the stream fails: encoder startup or authentication, local capture or encoding, the network connection to YouTube, or playback on viewers’ devices. That distinction points to the safest fix and helps avoid changing settings that are not involved.

Identify where the livestream stops

Check what the encoder and YouTube show at the moment of failure. If you use OBS, also note its exact error and save the log covering the disconnect. A local recording can help separate an encoding problem from an internet or YouTube ingest problem.

What you see Likely area to investigate Useful evidence
The encoder will not start, or YouTube rejects the connection Authentication or stream-key configuration The encoder’s error text and whether the key matches the one selected in YouTube Live Control Room
The encoder is running, but YouTube reports a missing or unhealthy stream Encoder output or the connection to YouTube’s ingest server Encoder preview, CPU load, encoder errors, local recording, and YouTube’s stream status
OBS reports dropped frames or intermittent disconnects Network stability or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain OBS log, upload stability, connection type, and whether a VPN or security filter is active
The stream is healthy in the encoder and YouTube, but viewers report trouble Viewer-side playback or an issue downstream of the encoder Test playback on another device or network and compare it with YouTube’s stream status

YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the encoder’s output, CPU load, errors, local archive, and outbound connection. A local recording that is also broken points toward capture or encoding; a clean local recording makes the network path or YouTube ingest more plausible, though it does not by itself prove the cause.

Fix a stream-key or authentication error

If the encoder uses a stream key and YouTube will not accept the stream, YouTube’s documented recovery is to generate a new key in Live Control Room and update the encoder with it. Do not assume a macOS update changed the key: verify which key is selected in both places.

  1. Open YouTube Live Control Room and locate the stream’s stream-key settings.
  2. Generate a new stream key if the existing key is rejected or you cannot confirm it is the correct one.
  3. In the encoder, replace the old key with the new one and save the setting.
  4. Start the encoder again and check whether YouTube receives the stream.

YouTube’s encoder setup uses a server URL and stream key. If your software connects to YouTube without a key, YouTube directs users to contact that software’s support team rather than apply the stream-key procedure.

Check the encoder before changing your network

Confirm the encoder still supports your macOS version

After an operating-system update, verify that the installed version of OBS or another encoder supports the macOS version on the Mac mini. OBS maintains a macOS compatibility page; check it for the versions currently listed rather than relying on old compatibility advice. If the encoder is out of date, update it using its official process, then test again.

Inspect output, CPU load, and a local recording

  • Look at the encoder’s preview and confirm the expected video and audio are present.
  • Check whether the encoder reports errors or unusually high CPU load when the stream stops.
  • If you have a local archive, play the section around the failure. Note whether video or audio also freezes, breaks up, or disappears there.
  • Compare the encoder’s status with YouTube’s status. A running encoder is not enough by itself to establish that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.

If the local output is faulty, concentrate on the encoder and its capture or encoding settings before treating the internet connection as the cause. If the local output is healthy but YouTube loses the stream, test the outbound connection next.

Resolve OBS dropped frames and disconnects

OBS says that dropped frames or intermittent disconnections indicate a network issue between the computer and the remote stream ingest server. Its guidance also describes a connection that is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. This is a diagnostic direction, not proof that any one component is at fault.

Use a bitrate your connection can sustain

  1. Check your upload speed and, more importantly, whether it remains stable while the stream is running.
  2. If OBS is dropping frames, reduce the streaming bitrate and test again. OBS gives 75% of total upload speed as a starting point, not as a guaranteed YouTube target or a promise that the connection will remain stable.
  3. Use OBS’s Auto Configuration Wizard if you need help choosing initial settings, then verify the result during an actual test stream.

A lower bitrate can improve reliability when the connection cannot sustain the configured rate, but it may reduce image quality. Do not treat a single speed-test result as proof that an unstable connection can carry a continuous stream.

Isolate Wi-Fi, VPN, security software, and network hardware

  1. If the Mac mini is on Wi-Fi, test with wired Ethernet. OBS recommends wired networking as a useful troubleshooting step.
  2. Temporarily test without a VPN or security software that could interfere with OBS’s connection. Change one thing at a time so you can tell whether it affects the disconnect.
  3. If a controlled test confirms security software is blocking OBS, add a targeted OBS exception and re-enable the security protection.
  4. Check the physical network path if the connection remains unreliable. OBS lists cables, router or modem, network cards, switches, and extenders as possible faulty links. If you suspect a cable or are streaming over Wi-Fi, a suitable Ethernet cable is a conditional way to test a wired connection—not a universal fix.
  5. If the local recording is healthy and the outbound connection tests poorly, contact your internet service provider about the connection.

Review macOS firewall access without disabling protection

If there is evidence that the firewall is blocking OBS, review the app’s access in System Settings > Network > Firewall > Options. Apple documents per-app firewall access at this location and notes that blocking an app can affect its performance or dependent software. Make only a targeted access correction if OBS is blocked; do not leave the firewall turned off as a permanent workaround.
