To test a responsive page with Puppeteer, set an explicit viewport—or emulate a known device—before navigating, load the page, then capture it with page.screenshot(). Repeat at widths tied to your site’s own breakpoints and compare the relevant viewport, full page, or element. The examples below use Puppeteer’s documented APIs; they do not prescribe universal breakpoint values.
Set up a responsive screenshot test
Install Puppeteer in a Node.js project, then create a browser page and set its dimensions before page.goto(). Puppeteer warns that some sites do not expect phones to change size, so setting the viewport before navigation matters. See the Page.setViewport() reference.

npm install puppeteer
Save this as responsive-screenshots.js. It captures the same URL at three illustrative sizes; replace them with widths and heights that exercise your own layout.

await page.screenshot({ path: `page-${size.name}.png` });
await page.close();
}
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
})();
Run it with node responsive-screenshots.js. The files are saved in the current directory. networkidle2 is the readiness condition used in Puppeteer’s screenshot-guide example, not a guarantee that every application has finished rendering. For pages that load content after network activity settles, wait for an application-specific selector or state before capturing.

Each page in a browser can have its own viewport. For a straightforward responsive layout check, explicit width and height make the dimensions under test clear. Puppeteer documents viewport sizing and its options in the API reference.
Choose viewport sizing or device emulation
Use explicit dimensions for layout breakpoints
Set width and height with page.setViewport() when the question is how the layout behaves at particular dimensions. Test around the breakpoints defined by your site rather than relying on a supposedly universal phone, tablet, and desktop matrix. The Puppeteer API documents the controls, but breakpoint selection depends on the page and its content.
Use a known device profile when device metrics and user agent matter
page.emulate(device) applies a known device’s metrics and user agent; Puppeteer describes it as a shortcut for setting the user agent and viewport. Emulate before navigation because applying the profile resizes the page. The profile represents browser emulation, not proof of behavior on physical hardware. See Page.emulate().

await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle2' });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page-iphone-emulated.png' });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
})();
Use a device name available in the installed Puppeteer version’s KnownDevices list. A change to isMobile or hasTouch through viewport settings can cause a page reload, another reason to configure the page before navigating.
Capture the part of the page you need to inspect
Viewport screenshot
page.screenshot({ path: 'view.png' }) captures the current view by default. Use this to inspect what fits on screen at a particular viewport.

For a component-level check, select the element and call screenshot() on its handle:
const header = await page.$('header');
if (!header) throw new Error('Expected header was not found');

Screenshot options include fullPage, clip, captureBeyondViewport, omitBackground, path, type, and quality. The reference documents fullPage as false and PNG as the default type; quality does not apply to PNG. When type is not set, the filename can determine the image type. Check the current ScreenshotOptions reference for option behavior and constraints.
Build a useful responsive comparison
A screenshot is evidence of one rendered case, not a complete responsive test by itself. Make the comparison answer a specific layout question:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Choose meaningful sizes: include widths just below and above the site’s own breakpoint transitions, plus any dimensions important to the content. There is no single breakpoint matrix prescribed by Puppeteer.
- Keep the capture scope consistent: compare viewport captures with viewport captures, or the same element or clip across cases. A full-page image answers a different question from the initially visible viewport.
- Record the case: include dimensions or device profile in filenames so a visual difference can be traced to its test conditions.
- Check the behavior, not only the pixels: inspect navigation, wrapping, overflow, and component visibility at the relevant sizes. Device emulation applies browser metrics and user-agent information but does not substitute for real-device testing.
Wait for the page and resize work before capturing
Navigation completion and application readiness are not always the same. Puppeteer’s screenshots example uses waitUntil: 'networkidle2', but a page can continue rendering or loading content afterward. If the page has a known ready signal, wait for it:

await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle2' });
await page.waitForSelector('[data-test="ready"]');
await page.screenshot({ path: 'ready-page.png' });
If your test changes the browser window’s content size rather than using the page viewport, account for asynchronous resizing. Puppeteer’s Window management guide says inner window sizing updates asynchronously; wait for the resize event before capturing. For ordinary responsive checks, setting the page viewport before navigation is usually the more direct control.
Troubleshoot common screenshot-test failures
The screenshot has the wrong layout
- Confirm the viewport or device profile is applied before
page.goto(). - Check that the capture is being taken from the intended page and that the dimensions are the ones recorded for the test.
- If the page was resized after navigation, wait for responsive resize work to finish before capture.
The capture is blank, incomplete, or missing late content
- Do not assume a network-idle condition means application rendering is complete. Wait for a selector or other page-specific ready condition.
- For content below the fold, use
fullPage: trueor capture the target element. Confirm that the content has loaded before taking the image. - Verify that the selected element exists before calling its screenshot method; otherwise the selector lookup returns no handle.
Changing mobile settings causes a reload
Puppeteer’s viewport reference warns that changes to isMobile or hasTouch can cause a page reload. Set those options before navigation when possible, then wait for the page’s ready condition before capturing.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. Its one-request API can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF; the response reports the page verdict and billing status in headers. Cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture, and each cleanup step can be turned off.
For a simple responsive capture, make one request per viewport by adding viewport parameters supported by the API. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for current parameter details.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Puppeteer’s device emulation test on a real phone?
No. It applies browser device metrics and a user agent; it is not evidence from physical hardware.
Can I save a screenshot as JPEG instead of PNG?
Yes. Set the screenshot type or use a filename whose extension determines the image type; consult Puppeteer’s ScreenshotOptions reference for the current supported behavior.
