Mac mini M4 vs VPS for a 24/7 YouTube Livestream

A Mac mini M4 and a VPS can both host a 24/7 YouTube stream, but neither guarantees uptime. Compare workload fit, upload capacity, plan limits and recovery before choosing.

Short answer: A Mac mini M4 can run OBS locally, while a VPS can host a software-generated stream—but neither is automatically a reliable 24/7 solution. Choose based on your stream’s workload and the failure points you can manage: a Mac depends on your home power and internet; a VPS depends on the provider’s sustained encoding capacity, network allowance and recovery arrangements. No provider-specific prices or comparable performance tests are established here, so there is no evidence-based universal cost or performance winner.

Start with the kind of stream you need to keep live

Live production or local capture

If your stream uses a locally connected camera, capture device, microphone or a production workflow you control in OBS, a local Mac may fit naturally. The equipment and software producing the stream are already in one place. A remote VPS cannot directly use local capture hardware unless you build a separate way to send that feed to it.

Software-generated or prerecorded video

A feed assembled in software, including a prerecorded-video loop, may be easier to host remotely than a production tied to local hardware. That is a workflow distinction, not proof that any given VPS can encode your chosen resolution and frame rate. Confirm the actual plan’s sustained capacity before relying on it.

YouTube’s encoder guidance describes encoder-based streaming for uses such as screen sharing, gameplay, external audio/video hardware and more advanced production. YouTube also lists a cloud-based tool for continuous prerecorded-video streams; that adjacent use case does not mean every 24/7 channel should use a hosted service. YouTube’s encoder documentation is at YouTube Help: encoder settings and its streaming guidance at YouTube Help: live streaming tips and YouTube Help: continuous live streams.

Mac mini M4 vs VPS: what actually differs

Decision factor Mac mini M4 running OBS VPS running streaming software
Where encoding happens On your Mac, alongside any local production workflow. On the provider’s server; the specific plan must sustain your encoding workload.
What can interrupt the stream Local power, home internet, the Mac or OBS stopping, or an encoding problem. Provider or server problems, plan limits, remote software issues, or an encoding problem.
Network requirement Your upload connection must sustain the stream with headroom. Verify outbound bandwidth and any transfer or usage limits for the exact plan.
Operations Local macOS and OBS setup; decide how the Mac and OBS will restart and recover. Remote administration; verify supported operating system and software, access method and recovery process.
Costs Hardware outlay plus local electricity and internet. No workload-specific operating cost is established here. Recurring hosting fee and any applicable usage charges. No provider-specific fee or allowance is established here.
Proven 24/7 performance No independent Mac mini M4 24/7 OBS test is established here. No provider-specific benchmark or service commitment is established here.

Check whether the Mac mini can handle your OBS workload

OBS lists Apple Silicon as supported on macOS 11 or later, but compatibility alone does not establish that a particular scene will run reliably around the clock. OBS says, “Having a compatible system does not guarantee that it is capable of streaming or recording using OBS Studio.” Encoder choice, resolution, frame rate and scene complexity affect the load. See OBS Project’s system requirements.

Apple lists the 2024 Mac mini M4 configuration with 16 GB unified memory and a 256 GB SSD at 4 W idle and 65 W maximum power consumption, and 14 BTU/h idle and 222 BTU/h maximum thermal output. These are Apple’s figures for that specified configuration—not a measurement of OBS encoding or a 24/7 stream, and the maximum figure is not the expected draw during your workload. See Apple Support’s power-consumption and thermal-output information and Apple’s Mac mini specifications.

Before committing the Mac to continuous operation, test the actual OBS scene and encoder you intend to use. Include representative motion and audio, then monitor stream health and the Mac during a sustained run. Plan for what happens if OBS closes, the Mac restarts, or the home connection drops; a compatible computer does not by itself provide automatic recovery.

Verify a VPS plan before paying

“VPS” is not a workload specification. A price or advertised processor count alone does not prove that the server can encode your stream continuously or deliver it within the plan’s network limits. Ask or verify the following for the exact plan and region:

  • Recovery: What happens after the encoder crashes, the server reboots, or the provider has a network interruption? Is restart behavior something you configure, or a provider commitment?
  • Total cost: Include the recurring hosting fee and any relevant usage charges. Compare them with hardware outlay and local operating costs without assuming either option is cheaper.

There is no provider-specific VPS price, encoding benchmark, outbound allowance, regional reliability figure or support commitment established here. Treat claims about a VPS being cheaper, faster or more reliable than a Mac mini as unproven until they are tied to a specific plan and workload.

Set the YouTube ingest stream before comparing hosts

Choose resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate first. YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. For H.264, YouTube recommends 14 Mbps for 1080p30 and 17 Mbps for 1080p60; other resolutions, frame rates and codecs have different requirements. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. Check the current details in YouTube’s encoder settings guide.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Your available upload capacity must support the configured bitrate with headroom. YouTube recommends 20% headroom and warns that connection disruption can break a stream. A fast speed test at one moment does not establish a stable connection for continuous streaming. Test from the actual host and monitor stream health; if you use a backup encoder, check that its failover process works rather than assuming it will. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips.

YouTube automatically transcodes a live ingest into formats for viewers, but that does not compensate for an unstable or incorrectly configured input stream. Set up the stream key in your encoder as required, keep it private, and test the preview before relying on a 24/7 schedule.

Choose by failure management, not by the word “cloud”

Choose the Mac when the local workflow matters

  • Your production depends on local capture hardware or a macOS/OBS workflow.
  • You can provide stable home power and upload bandwidth, and you are prepared to monitor the Mac and plan restarts.
  • You have tested the actual scene and encoding settings rather than treating Apple’s compatibility or power figures as proof of continuous-stream performance.

Choose a VPS when remote hosting fits the workload

  • Your feed can be generated remotely without relying on local capture equipment.
  • You have confirmed sustained encoding capacity, outbound limits, supported software and remote access for the exact plan.
  • You understand the recovery path and the full recurring cost before committing.

In either setup, YouTube’s advice points to testing with representative audio and motion, checking the preview and monitoring stream health. Neither a local machine nor a remote server removes the need to test and plan for failure.

Or let it run in the cloud

For a prerecorded-video YouTube stream, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home; it does not go live from a camera. StreamNeo is always on from the cloud, supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month.

Troubleshooting a stream that will not stay live

OBS reports dropped frames or YouTube stream health degrades

Check that the host’s upload connection sustains the configured bitrate plus YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Test from the streaming location, reduce bitrate if capacity is insufficient, and investigate connection interruptions; a brief speed test is not a continuous reliability guarantee.

The encoder starts but the VPS struggles or stops

Recheck the plan’s sustained encoding capacity against the actual codec, resolution, frame rate and scene. Check provider limits and server logs, then test the recovery procedure. A plan’s nominal specifications do not establish continuous encoding performance.

The Mac runs OBS but the stream still fails

Compatibility does not guarantee adequate performance. Review encoder load and scene complexity, test a representative stream for an extended period, and check the Mac’s restart and OBS recovery behavior as well as power and internet stability.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

YouTube does not accept the stream as expected

Verify the stream key, ingest protocol and encoder settings. Use the recommended constant bitrate and keyframe interval, confirm the selected resolution and frame-rate bitrate guidance, and check YouTube’s preview and stream-health indicators before treating the feed as stable.

A backup encoder is part of the plan

Do not assume failover works because a second encoder exists. Test how it takes over and monitor whether YouTube receives a continuous, correctly configured stream, as YouTube recommends for appropriate backup-encoder setups.

Account for copyright and monetization separately

A technically stable 24/7 feed is not automatically authorized or eligible for monetization. Use video, music and other material you have rights to use for the intended broadcast, and review YouTube’s applicable copyright and channel policies before looping content. A successful ingest or YouTube transcode does not establish permission to rebroadcast material.
