Best Raspberry Pi OS Setup for an Always-On FFmpeg YouTube Stream

Use Raspberry Pi OS Lite, configure remote access in Imager, match YouTube’s ingest settings, and test the exact FFmpeg workload under sustained load before relying on it 24/7.

For a headless Raspberry Pi that sends an FFmpeg stream to YouTube, use the current 64-bit Raspberry Pi OS Lite image on a model listed as compatible, configure networking and SSH before first boot, and tune FFmpeg to YouTube’s ingest settings. Then test the exact source, resolution, frame rate, and filters you intend to use under sustained load. Official guidance establishes the setup basics, but it does not guarantee that a particular Pi can continuously encode every workload.

Choose a supported Pi and Raspberry Pi OS image

Raspberry Pi OS is Raspberry Pi’s officially supported operating system. As of October 3, 2026, its downloads page lists a 64-bit Raspberry Pi OS Lite image based on Debian Trixie, released September 15, 2026, and includes Raspberry Pi 5 and Raspberry Pi 4 among supported models. Lite omits the desktop environment, making it a practical starting point for a headless streaming appliance. Check the current compatibility listing when selecting a different board or image: Raspberry Pi OS downloads.

Configure headless access while imaging

Use Raspberry Pi Imager to write the OS image and set up the device before its first boot. Configure a hostname, user credentials, network access, and SSH in Imager’s customization options. This lets you connect remotely after boot rather than relying on a monitor and keyboard. Raspberry Pi recommends Lite when a desktop environment is not needed: Raspberry Pi getting-started documentation.

Allow for boot storage and model-specific power

Raspberry Pi’s getting-started guidance says an SD card with at least 8 GB is enough to get started with Raspberry Pi OS Lite; choose additional capacity if your own files or operating needs require it. The same guidance recommends an official Raspberry Pi power supply and gives different specifications by board: 27 W USB-C for Raspberry Pi 5 and 15 W USB-C for Raspberry Pi 4 Model B. Do not assume one rating applies to every model. Prefer a stable wired network when available, and confirm that the Pi’s actual upload connection remains reliable.

Set YouTube’s ingest profile in FFmpeg

YouTube documents RTMP and RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265, and AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, CBR, and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. For H.264, the recommended bitrates include 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 3 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps. These are YouTube guidance figures, not a promise that a Pi can encode that profile continuously. See YouTube’s encoder settings.

Match resolution, bitrate, and keyframes

  • Choose the output profile first. Set the resolution and frame rate to match what your source and chosen Pi can sustain. YouTube’s cited H.264 bitrate recommendations are specific to 1080p30 and 720p30; do not treat them as universal values for every resolution or codec.
  • Use constant bitrate. YouTube recommends CBR for live encoding. Set the target bitrate to suit the chosen output profile and available upload capacity.
  • Set keyframes two seconds apart. YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds.
  • Choose a supported audio format. YouTube lists AAC or MP3 audio. Check that FFmpeg’s selected audio codec and input handling produce a valid stream.
  • Use RTMPS when configuring the ingest destination. Copy the server URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room; use YouTube’s encoder setup instructions for the current interface and ingest details: Set up your encoder for live streaming.

Protect the stream key

Treat the YouTube stream key like a password. Do not expose it in public command histories, screenshots, source repositories, or logs. If it is compromised, rotate it using the controls in Live Control Room. Avoid pasting a command containing the key into a place that saves shared shell history or makes the value visible to other users.

Run a representative test before leaving the stream unattended

YouTube recommends testing before going live and checking stream health. Its network guidance says the total stream bitrate must fit the available upload bandwidth and recommends 20 percent headroom. Measure the stability of the actual connection, not just a peak speed result, and check the stream in YouTube’s control room while it is running: YouTube encoder settings and YouTube streaming tips.

  1. Build the intended workload. Use the real source and planned output resolution, frame rate, codecs, and filters. A simple transcode and a workload with scaling or other filters may stress the board differently.
  2. Start a test stream and inspect it. Verify that YouTube receives video and audio, that the selected ingest profile is accepted, and that stream health remains stable.
  3. Run long enough to reveal sustained-load problems. Watch for dropped frames, interruptions, or signs that the board cannot keep up. The official sources cited here do not provide a sustained FFmpeg benchmark for a particular Pi model and workload, so a successful short launch is not evidence of 24/7 readiness.
  4. Validate the network and power arrangement. Check that upload capacity has the recommended headroom and that the Pi remains stable with its model-appropriate power supply and intended network connection.

Can a Raspberry Pi stream to YouTube 24/7?

It can be used as an always-on stream appliance only if the selected board, FFmpeg build, input, encoding workload, cooling and power arrangement, storage, and network remain stable in a representative sustained test. The available official OS and YouTube guidance does not establish a guaranteed Pi model, codec, or resolution for continuous encoding. Compare candidate builds by OS support, source-to-output workload, sustained processing capability, memory headroom, model-specific power needs, thermal behavior, storage, and upload reliability; test rather than relying on a blanket performance claim.

Troubleshoot the common failure points

The Pi is unreachable after imaging

  • Confirm that the saved hostname and network settings are correct and that the device is connected to the intended network.
  • Check that SSH was enabled during imaging and that you are using the configured credentials.
  • If network access is uncertain, connect a display and keyboard temporarily to inspect boot and connectivity.

YouTube does not receive a valid stream

  • Check that the server URL and stream key were copied from the current Live Control Room setup and that the key has not been rotated since configuration.
  • Review the selected transport, video and audio codecs, frame rate, bitrate mode, and keyframe interval against YouTube’s encoder guidance.
  • Use RTMPS where possible and inspect YouTube’s stream-health feedback during a test.

The stream stutters or drops frames

  • Reduce workload variables one at a time, such as output resolution, frame rate, or filters, then repeat a sustained test.
  • Check whether the measured upload remains stable and preserves YouTube’s recommended 20 percent bandwidth headroom over the total stream bitrate.
  • Check power stability and thermal behavior under load. The available sources do not specify a universal thermal limit or workload benchmark for this use, so validate the particular board and setup.

The stream disconnects during an unattended run

First distinguish a YouTube ingest interruption from a Pi shutdown or local network loss by checking the board and YouTube stream-health status. Recheck power, network stability, and the actual FFmpeg workload before leaving the system unattended. A stream that runs once is not evidence that it will recover from every failure or remain healthy indefinitely.
