If OBS is instead counting dropped frames, investigate the network and upload capacity—those symptoms point to different problems and need different fixes.
First identify what OBS is reporting
Check OBS’s Stats window while the problem is happening. The exact menu placement can vary by OBS version; look for the Stats view and watch whether the encoding-lag, rendering-lag, or dropped-frames counter rises. OBS’s Encoding Performance Troubleshooting guide distinguishes performance strain from connection trouble.

- Encoding lag or encoder overload: OBS cannot encode frames quickly enough for the selected settings and workload.
- Rendering lag: OBS is struggling to compose the scene, often because of scene complexity or GPU use.
- Dropped frames: OBS is having trouble maintaining its connection to the remote ingest server. Check connection stability and bitrate rather than treating this automatically as an encoder problem.
These counters can have different causes, and more than one can occur at once. Make one change at a time, then run a test stream with the same scenes and sources you intend to use live.
Reduce OBS encoding and rendering load
1. Lower the output resolution
In OBS, open Settings → Video and reduce the Output (Scaled) Resolution before changing the base canvas. For example, if you are outputting at 1080p and the stream can work at 720p, test 1280×720. Lower output resolution reduces encoder work; check that text and other important details remain readable at the smaller size.

- 8-core GPU with up to 6x faster graphics for graphics-intensive apps and games*

OBS notes that changing the base canvas can complicate source layout, so reserve lowering Base (Canvas) Resolution for a system that remains severely constrained after less disruptive changes. If you do change it, inspect and reposition sources in each scene.
2. Try 30 fps instead of 60 fps
In Settings → Video, change Common FPS Values from 60 to 30 if 60 fps is producing performance trouble. OBS says frame rate affects both rendering and encoding performance. A 30 fps stream can be a practical fallback for content that does not need the smoother motion of 60 fps.

3. Simplify scenes and sources
Keep only the sources needed in the active scene. Browser sources and filters can consume substantial resources, so disable or reduce complex ones during a test. Where they do the job, consider simpler static images or media sources instead. Recheck overlays, transitions, and filters in the scenes that will be used on air; an idle scene may not reproduce the load of the real show.

Choose an encoder compatible with your Mac mini
In OBS, open Settings → Output, set Output Mode to Advanced if needed, and check the streaming encoder options. Available labels and choices may vary with OBS version and hardware.
- Apple silicon Mac mini: OBS documents Apple VideoToolbox H.264 streaming support. Hardware encoding can reduce CPU load, but it does not guarantee that every combination of resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity will run smoothly.
- Intel Mac mini: OBS says VideoToolbox streaming is unsupported on Intel Macs because it lacks the constant-bitrate support required by most streaming services. Follow OBS guidance and use x264 for streaming on Intel Mac.
OBS’s hardware encoding guidance and encoder selection guide describe encoder choices. Test the actual scenes and output settings you plan to use; compatibility alone is not a performance guarantee.

Set YouTube Live bitrate and keyframes appropriately
YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions cover H.264, H.265, and AV1 over RTMP/RTMPS, at up to 60 fps. The appropriate bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate; do not assume one value is right for every stream.
| H.264 output | YouTube recommended ingest bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s listed recommendations, not a guarantee that your Mac or connection can sustain them. If OBS struggles, test a lower resolution or frame rate and select a bitrate suitable for both the chosen output and your stable upload capacity. YouTube specifies constant bitrate (CBR) and recommends a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. Check these under OBS’s streaming output settings, whose labels may vary by version.

If OBS shows dropped frames, troubleshoot the connection
OBS says dropped frames generally indicate a connection issue between your computer and the remote ingest server, rather than an OBS encoding problem. Use YouTube’s encoder guidance and OBS’s dropped frames troubleshooting to check the connection and stream configuration.
- Check sustained upload capacity. YouTube recommends upload bandwidth with 20% headroom above the total stream bitrate. Include both primary and backup stream bitrate in that total if both streams are in use.
- Lower bitrate if the connection cannot sustain it. Reduce the stream’s bitrate and, if necessary, its resolution or frame rate; then test whether dropped frames stop increasing.
- Check stability, not just a brief peak. A connection that briefly reaches the target but fluctuates may still drop frames. Test at the time and under the conditions you plan to stream.
Network changes will not fix genuine encoding or rendering overload. Use the OBS counters to decide which path to pursue.
Common symptoms and what to try
| Symptom | Likely direction | First useful test |
|---|---|---|
| Encoding lag or encoder overload rises | Encoding workload or encoder selection | Lower output resolution; try 30 fps; verify the encoder is appropriate for Apple silicon or Intel. |
| Rendering lag rises | Scene composition or GPU pressure | Disable complex browser sources and filters; inspect GPU use in Activity Monitor. |
| Dropped frames rise | Connection to YouTube ingest or bitrate too high for sustained upload | Check upload headroom and stability; lower bitrate if needed. |
| Issue appears only in a busy scene | Scene-specific source or filter load | Test with fewer sources, then re-enable them one by one to identify costly elements. |
What a Mac mini upgrade can—and cannot—promise
The relevant OBS guidance does not establish a Mac mini model-specific benchmark or show that buying a particular configuration fixes encoder overload. Apple silicon support for VideoToolbox is useful, but a specific workload still depends on encoder, output resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. Diagnose the counter and test lighter settings before treating a hardware purchase as the remedy.

Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos playing as a YouTube live stream around the clock, rather than to broadcast a live camera or OBS scene, StreamNeo is a different option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The cloud keeps the stream running without a computer or home connection left on. It streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month.
