Yes. You can run a prerecorded, rights-cleared children’s video stream from an India-region VPS by sending it to YouTube Live with an unattended encoder. The practical work is more than starting a loop: confirm that the channel can stream, mark the audience accurately, choose one supported ingestion protocol, budget enough outbound transfer, and arrange restart and monitoring. A VPS plan’s advertised specifications alone do not prove it can run your stream continuously.
Before you set up the VPS
Confirm the channel can go live
YouTube requires live-streaming access and channel verification. Policy restrictions or other actions can disable live streaming, so check the channel’s standing before paying for a server or building automation. Do not try to evade an active restriction by moving the broadcast to another channel.

YouTube Help states that a channel can have up to 10 active streams and a stream key up to 3 active streams at the same time. Those limits apply together; they are not an allowance of 10 streams for every key. The figures were checked in 2026, so check YouTube’s current limits before designing a multi-stream setup.
Clear the video, music, and artwork
Use material you own or have permission to stream and archive. A copyright match or strike can restrict a live stream. A license that permits a one-time upload or private playback may not necessarily permit continuous public looping or an archived broadcast; confirm the rights for both uses before going live.

Set the children’s audience correctly
In YouTube Live Control Room, set the audience designation accurately for the broadcast. YouTube requires creators to identify whether content is made for kids, including livestreams, regardless of the creator’s location. This is an editorial and legal determination about the content and audience—not an encoder setting. Do not mark a stream “made for kids” merely because children might watch it, or mark it otherwise to retain features.
Plan around disabled features
For a made-for-kids livestream, YouTube disables features including live chat, live chat replay, comments on archives and upcoming streams, and reminder notifications. Personalized ads are disabled on live streams and Premieres; contextual ads may show. YouTube’s official policy wording is: “Personalized ads will be disabled on live streams and Premieres. Contextual ads may be shown.” Automated ads also depend on channel monetization eligibility, and a broadcast may be ineligible. Do not build the stream’s audience plan around chat, Super Chat, or personalized advertising.
If you operate an encoder, setting the audience in Live Control Room is distinct from building an API application that targets children. Developers creating child-directed YouTube API clients need to review YouTube’s developer policies, including their requirements concerning legal compliance, notifying Google of the child-directed nature of the application, personalized ads, and write-based actions.

Prepare the broadcast and choose an ingestion protocol
- Create the broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room. Select the intended stream and audience setting. If you automate broadcast lifecycle tasks through the API, verify current authorization and API behavior before relying on that automation.
- Choose one ingestion protocol your encoder supports. YouTube documents HLS and DASH, among other ingestion options. Follow the requirements for the protocol you actually select; do not combine HLS container instructions with DASH manifest or segment settings.
- Configure the encoder for that protocol. For HLS, YouTube’s guidance specifies multiplexed M2TS, H.264 or HEVC video, AAC audio, a closed GOP, and media segments lasting one to four seconds. YouTube describes HLS as a relatively higher-latency option intended for premium content requiring high quality or resolution.
- If using DASH, follow the DASH guide instead. The documented implementation uses HTTP PUT delivery for segments, separate requests for the manifest and segments, timely delivery of the manifest and initialization data, and closed GOPs. The guide describes a GOP size of about two seconds and less than eight seconds. These are protocol-specific implementation directions, not general settings to apply to every encoder.
- Use live-stream settings for a live broadcast. YouTube’s published upload settings recommend H.264, progressive scan, closed GOP, and AAC-LC and list bitrates by resolution, but those figures are for video uploads, not live streams. Do not use upload bitrate figures as a substitute for YouTube’s separate live encoder settings. Check the current live settings for the chosen resolution and protocol when configuring your encoder.
Keep the stream key private. Enter it only in the encoder or service that sends your broadcast, and do not publish it in screenshots, scripts, logs, or support posts. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube’s controls and update the encoder before restarting.
Run the encoder on the VPS
Once the broadcast and encoder are configured, make the host run the encoder without an interactive desktop session. The precise service manager and command depend on the operating system, encoder, media format, and ingestion protocol; the available YouTube guidance does not establish one universal VPS command. Whatever implementation you choose, design it to recover from both an encoder-process exit and a host interruption.
- Keep the source media accessible. Store the video and any needed configuration on the server, and confirm that the service account can read them after a restart.
- Run the encoder as a supervised background service. Configure a restart policy for unexpected process exits. Confirm that a manual stop does not cause an unwanted restart loop, and that startup waits until required media and network access are available.
- Write useful logs. Record startup, exit, reconnect, and encoder errors in a location with enough disk capacity. Avoid writing the stream key into logs.
- Monitor health rather than just process status. A running encoder process does not prove that YouTube is receiving a usable stream. Check YouTube’s live preview and status, and alert on a stopped process, repeated reconnects, or unavailable media.
- Test recovery before relying on it. During a planned test, restart the encoder and separately simulate a host restart. Confirm that the process returns, reconnects to the intended broadcast, and produces usable audio and video.
These are operational safeguards, not a guarantee of uninterrupted broadcasting. YouTube documents broadcast lifecycle controls, but neither that documentation nor a VPS specification promises that one broadcast will remain live forever. Check the live preview after startup and periodically during operation. If archive availability matters, verify the resulting archive in the channel; a universal archive duration or maximum continuous-session duration is not established here.

Choose an Indian VPS by workload and transfer
For an already-encoded file, relaying it is a different workload from encoding or transcoding video on the VPS. First decide whether the host will only send the media as encoded or will also perform video encoding. There is no established minimum VPS size for 24/7 YouTube streaming from India, so no particular CPU or RAM figure can be treated as a proven threshold.

| Outgoing bitrate | Approximate transfer per day | Approximate transfer over 30 days |
|---|---|---|
| 1 Mbps | 0.45 GB | 13.5 GB |
| 4 Mbps | 1.8 GB | 54 GB |
| 6 Mbps | 2.7 GB | 81 GB |
These are estimates derived from continuous streaming at the stated bitrate, not measurements from a hosting provider. Actual usage can differ. Review how the provider counts outbound data and what happens when included transfer is exceeded; include headroom instead of buying exactly the calculated amount.
Check the plan’s terms, not just its headline specs
- CPU and sustained use: If encoding on the VPS, benchmark the intended resolution, frame rate, codec, and preset on the exact plan. A provider’s vCPU allocation alone does not show how the encoder will perform under sustained load.
- Storage: Account for source media, logs, and any local backup. Do not treat a VPS disk as a durable media archive without checking the provider’s storage terms and maintaining a separate copy where needed.
- Region and route: An India data center may be convenient for local administration and billing, but an Indian server location is not established as a YouTube requirement or as a guarantee of better delivery.
- Root access and support: Confirm that the plan allows your intended software and unattended workload, and review support scope, sustained-CPU rules, transfer overage charges, and SLA exclusions.
A vendor may list Mumbai VPS plans with CPU, RAM, storage, transfer, and prices. Those are vendor specifications, not independent proof that a plan can sustain your encoder continuously. Test the actual plan unattended and inspect its logs, transfer accounting, CPU use, and YouTube stream health before depending on it.

Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube will not accept the broadcast | The channel lacks live-stream access, has a restriction, or the stream key or broadcast configuration is wrong. | Check channel eligibility and policy standing, then verify that the encoder is using the key and protocol configured for that broadcast. Do not switch channels to evade a restriction. |
| Stream starts but YouTube reports an ingest or format problem | The encoder settings do not match the selected protocol, or the key media/container requirements are not met. | Confirm whether the endpoint is HLS or DASH and apply only that protocol’s requirements. For HLS, check M2TS, H.264 or HEVC, AAC, closed GOP, and one-to-four-second segments. For DASH, check its delivery and manifest requirements. |
| The VPS works briefly, then transfer or performance becomes a problem | Included outbound data is too low, an overage policy applies, or a sustained encode exceeds the plan’s capacity. | Compare provider transfer accounting with the bitrate-based estimate and add margin. If encoding on-host, benchmark the exact workload and inspect CPU and logs. |
| The encoder process is running but the channel is not live | The encoder may be disconnected, sending unusable media, or pointed at a mismatched broadcast or key. | Check the encoder logs and YouTube’s live preview/status rather than relying on the process indicator. Verify the selected broadcast, key, and protocol. |
| The stream stops after an application or machine interruption | The encoder is not supervised, does not start after reboot, or cannot access its media/configuration at startup. | Check the service restart policy, startup dependencies, service-account access to media, and recovery behavior after a controlled restart. |
| Expected chat, comments, reminders, or personalized ads are absent | The broadcast is designated made for kids, for which YouTube disables some engagement features and personalized ads. | Review the audience designation for accuracy. Do not change it simply to restore features; plan around the applicable limitations. |
| A copyright claim or restriction interrupts the stream | Some video, music, or artwork may not be cleared for public live streaming or archiving. | Review the relevant rights for both continuous streaming and archive use, and replace material that is not cleared. |
