Choose based on the memory configuration your models need and the software stack you intend to use—not on a broad claim that one platform is faster. Apple’s Mac mini offers an Apple Silicon path through MLX; Windows mini PCs built around AMD Ryzen AI Max+ 395 can be configured with up to 128 GB of system memory, with Windows workflows described by AMD for LM Studio and llama.cpp. The available specifications and vendor guidance do not establish a speed winner for a particular model. Compare exact machines using the same model, quantization, context length, and runtime before buying.

Mac mini vs. Windows mini PC: the main differences

How much memory does local AI need?

Memory is a key fit constraint, but model weights are only part of the working set. The runtime, context length and its KV cache, the operating system, and other open applications also use memory. A model that appears to fit based only on its weights may leave too little room for a useful context or for other software.

Apple’s Mac mini specifications list the configurations available for its M4 and M4 Pro models; verify the exact offering in your region rather than assuming every configuration is available everywhere. For a Ryzen AI Max+ 395 system, AMD lists a maximum of 128 GB of system memory, but the processor’s ceiling does not mean every mini PC using it ships with that capacity. Check the retail system’s installed memory and allocation behavior.

AMD also described up to 96 GB of Variable Graphics Memory on a Ryzen AI Max+ 395 system with 128 GB of memory in an article dated July 29, 2025. That is AMD’s description of a Windows graphics-memory allocation capability, not a universal promise for every operating system, driver, system, or runtime. Treat it as a configuration-specific vendor claim, not as a direct equivalent to the Mac’s memory behavior.

Which software path fits your workflow?

Mac mini: Apple Silicon with MLX

MLX is an array framework designed for Apple Silicon. Its project documentation describes shared memory for arrays and CPU/GPU support. This makes it a natural route to investigate if you want to run local models within an Apple Silicon and macOS workflow. It does not guarantee compatibility with every model, feature, or runtime you may want; check the software and model requirements for your specific use.

Windows mini PC: LM Studio and llama.cpp

AMD describes local LLM workflows on Windows with LM Studio and llama.cpp for Ryzen AI Max+ systems. Actual support and results depend on the exact mini PC, drivers, runtime version, model, and desired features. AMD’s article includes vendor capability claims, not an independent Mac-versus-Windows test. Its reference to a preview driver and LM Studio describes instructions at the time of publication; consult current driver guidance before treating those instructions as setup advice.

Does either computer run local models faster?

The cited specifications and vendor descriptions do not establish which system is faster for a particular model. Nor does a model’s parameter count alone establish its quality, generation speed, or practical context capacity. A large model fitting in memory is not proof that it will respond at a useful speed.

How to choose for your use case

Choose the Mac mini if…

  • You want the Apple Silicon and macOS software path, including MLX.
  • A specific Mac mini memory and storage configuration meets the needs of your target model and context.
  • The compact Apple desktop fits the rest of your setup and software requirements.

Choose a Windows mini PC if…

  • You need Windows compatibility for your workflow.
  • A specific Ryzen AI Max+ configuration offers the memory and software support your target workload requires.
  • You have verified the exact system’s memory, driver/runtime support, thermals, and price rather than relying on the processor specification alone.

What to verify before you buy

  1. Name the workload. List the model or models, quantization, and context length you want to use. Do not choose by parameter count alone.
  2. Check the exact configuration. For the Mac mini, verify its memory and storage on Apple’s specifications page and in the listing for your market. For a Windows mini PC, check installed memory, GPU memory allocation, thermals, and the complete system specification.
  3. Confirm the software path. Check that your chosen model and required features work with MLX on the Mac or with the intended runtime and drivers on Windows.
  4. Compare results on matched workloads. Look for tests using the same model, quantization, context, runtime, and software versions. Compare prompt processing and generation separately.
  5. Compare the configured systems, not bare platform names. Include current price, storage, power and noise needs, and any setup constraints that matter to you.
