Thermoelectric cooling can also leave visible moisture on a phone in some conditions. ASUS documents that possibility for its AeroActive Cooler 6, but its product-specific guidance is not proof that every cooler is harmless—or that every phone will be damaged.
How does a phone cooler work?
Gaming, intensive apps and charging can make a phone warm. A cooler attaches to the phone or its heat-spreading surface and helps carry heat away. The mechanism depends on the accessory.

Fan-only coolers
A fan-only model increases airflow across the phone’s exterior. Its cooling effect depends on how well air reaches the relevant surface and how much heat the phone can transfer to that surface.

A thermoelectric cooler (TEC) uses electrical current through thermoelectric material to move heat from a cold side to a hot side—the Peltier effect. A fan and heatsink help carry heat away from the hot side. The accessory must dispose of that heat; making one contact surface cold is not, by itself, the whole cooling process. The University of Michigan researchers’ 2017 paper describes a TEC approach for mobile devices.

Some products offer both fan-only and thermoelectric modes. ASUS lists these modes for the AeroActive Cooler 6, an accessory for the ROG Phone 6 series. ASUS also describes an externally powered higher-power mode and a humidity sensor protection mechanism intended to prevent excessive cooling that could create condensation. Can a phone cooler improve performance?
It can help during sustained heavy workloads if heat is causing a phone to reduce processor speed, but the result depends on the handset, cooler and conditions. In a 2017 smartphone evaluation, University of Michigan researchers reported average processor-speed loss from maximum of 1.8% with their adaptive TEC solution, compared with 19.2% without it. The reported result used 0.2 W of cooling power. This was a specific research system and test, not a guarantee for consumer clip-on accessories or current phones. “Efficient Thermoelectric Cooling for Mobile Devices”

ASUS says its lab comparison found up to 25°C lower surface temperature near the CPU with the AeroActive Cooler 6 versus an ROG Phone 6 without the cooler; ASUS notes that results may vary with conditions. That is a manufacturer-reported result for the named product and comparison, not a general expectation for phone coolers. ASUS product page
Can a phone cooler damage your phone?
There is no basis here to say that all phone coolers damage phones, or to promise that condensation can never cause harm. A cold surface can lead to water droplets when it meets warmer, humid air. ASUS says droplets may form on the back of a phone used with its AeroActive Cooler 6 and advises wiping them away. Its FAQ calls the droplets a normal physical phenomenon for that product. That FAQ concerns visible droplets on the exterior. ASUS’s separate product description says the cooler has a humidity sensor and protection mechanism against excessive cooling that could create condensation. These statements do not establish condensation-damage rates inside phones, or outcomes for other phones, accessories, environments or use patterns. ASUS product information
- If moisture appears, stop using the cooler and wipe external droplets away.
- Follow the instructions for both your phone and the specific cooler; do not assume another model has ASUS’s sensor or safeguards.
- Do not treat visible exterior droplets as proof of internal damage—or as proof that internal condensation is impossible.
What should you check before using a cooler?
Compatibility and setup matter as much as the cooling label. Check the exact phone models supported, how the accessory attaches, whether your case must come off and how the cooler is powered. For example, ASUS identifies the AeroActive Cooler 6 as compatible with the ROG Phone 6 series. When comparing products, distinguish among cooling method, supported fit and attachment, documented controls such as temperature or humidity sensing, and the evidence behind performance claims. A lab comparison for one product or a controlled academic result should not be generalized to an unrelated cooler.

What to do if your phone gets hot
A cooler is most relevant when sustained high-load use causes heat-related performance reductions. It is not a substitute for troubleshooting unexplained heating or following the phone maker’s safety guidance. Nothing’s support guidance for Nothing phones recommends removing the case, pausing use with the screen off, avoiding prolonged high-temperature use, using the official charger and not continuing to play while charging. Nothing gives an operating-environment range of 0–35°C for its phones; that range is not a universal limit for every brand. It recommends contacting its service channel if unexplained heating persists. Nothing Support: “My phone is heating up. What can I do?”
