The Mac mini is the better-value desktop if its chip, memory, ports, and display support fit your workload. Choose Mac Studio if you need its M5 Max or M5 Ultra options, up to 512GB of unified memory, or its professional connectivity. In the U.S., the current entry models start at $899 for Mac mini with M6 and $2,499 for Mac Studio with M5 Max—but those are different configurations, not a like-for-like performance comparison.
Current models and U.S. starting prices
Apple announced availability for these models on September 22, 2026. General U.S. starting prices are:

The $1,600 difference between the two entry prices is useful as a budget reference, but not as a performance-per-dollar verdict: the mini starts with M6, while the Studio starts with M5 Max. Compare the exact chip, memory, storage, and ports you would buy.

What differs most: chip and memory ceiling
Mac mini: M6 or M5 Pro
Apple lists Mac mini configurations with M6 or M5 Pro and unified memory from 16GB to 64GB. The M6 mini uses Thunderbolt 4; the M5 Pro mini uses Thunderbolt 5. The product and technical pages provide the current configuration details: Mac mini and Mac mini technical specifications.
Mac Studio: M5 Max or M5 Ultra
Mac Studio is available with M5 Max or M5 Ultra and unified memory configurations from 36GB to 512GB. Apple lists Thunderbolt 5, HDMI, Ethernet, and SDXC card support. The front USB-C ports vary between the Max and Ultra versions, so check the exact model rather than assuming every Studio has the same front connections. Apple says the M5 Ultra version supports up to eight displays and has up to 1.2TB/s of memory bandwidth; those are Apple-published specifications, not independent performance measurements. See Mac Studio technical specifications.

Which one should you buy?
Choose Mac mini if the configuration meets your needs
- Your applications and projects fit an M6 or M5 Pro configuration and its memory ceiling.
- You want to spend less on the desktop and do not need Studio’s higher memory ceiling or listed professional connections.
- You are comfortable choosing a display and input devices separately; the desktop itself is only one part of the setup.
- You need Thunderbolt 5 but not necessarily a Studio: the M5 Pro mini has it, while the M6 mini has Thunderbolt 4.
Choose Mac Studio when a specific requirement points to it
- Your work calls for an M5 Max or M5 Ultra configuration.
- Your projects require more unified memory than the mini’s listed maximum of 64GB.
- You need the Studio’s Thunderbolt 5, HDMI, Ethernet, SDXC card support, or other model-specific connections. Confirm port count and placement for the configuration you intend to purchase.
- You have a defined professional workload—such as video, 3D, software development, or local AI—and its software, project sizes, or display setup justify the Studio configuration. The product name alone does not establish that you will benefit.
How to compare configurations before paying
Start with the requirements of the work, then compare complete configurations. A higher-tier desktop is not automatically the better buy if the less expensive model already meets those requirements.

- Identify the workload. Note the applications, project sizes, number of displays, and any specific software requirements. Do not infer a performance gain from the model name alone.
- Set the chip and memory requirement. Check whether M6 or M5 Pro and up to 64GB of memory on mini are sufficient, or whether your work calls for an M5 Max or M5 Ultra and more memory.
- Check the connections you will actually use. Match Thunderbolt generation, HDMI, Ethernet, SDXC, and front-port needs against the specifications for the exact chip option.
- Compare configured prices, not just entry prices. Add the memory and storage options you need on each model, then compare those totals. The base-price gap can widen or narrow with configuration.
- Verify display support and the rest of the setup. Check Apple’s technical specifications for the chosen model, and account separately for a display and input devices.
How to interpret Apple’s performance claims
Apple’s launch announcement includes comparisons with named previous-generation configurations. Treat those as Apple’s claims and retain the stated comparison and test conditions if citing a figure; they are not independent benchmarks and do not establish how every application or workload will perform. The sources cited here do not provide independent benchmark results for the current mini and Studio models.
