Google Search and Maps can turn a nearby-business search into a call, message, website visit, booking, reservation, or order. For business owners, the practical goal is to keep each available contact route accurate, relevant, and ready to handle the customer’s next step. Which options appear depends on the profile, business, and region.
How a customer gets from a local search to your business
A Business Profile is a storefront on Google Search and Maps. A customer might search for “pizza near me” or “salons open now,” compare local results, and use the details or action links shown on a profile. Depending on the business and available features, that profile may display its location, contact details, website, hours, photos, and reviews. Google explains how Business Profiles appear on Search and Maps; its query examples illustrate search intent, not measured search frequency.

Think of the profile as a path to a useful next step, not a guarantee that every customer will see every button. A quick question may suit a phone call or an eligible messaging option; a customer ready to transact may need a booking or order link. Choose and maintain the routes that fit what the business actually offers.

| Customer action | What the profile may provide | What the business should check |
|---|---|---|
| Call | A primary phone number and, where configured, up to two additional numbers. | It reaches the correct location, is controlled by the business, and is monitored during the hours shown. Google recommends a local number where possible. |
| Text or WhatsApp | An optional messaging contact for eligible, claimed and verified profiles in select regions. | Confirm availability for the specific profile and region. If both text and WhatsApp are added, Google says only the text-message option displays. |
| Visit the website | A link to the business website. | Make sure the destination represents the location and makes the next step easy to find. |
| Book or reserve | An appointment or reservation link, which may be supplied by a third-party provider. | Check that the destination is appropriate, current, and covers the services or location offered. |
| Order | Food-order or shopping-order links, where relevant. | Confirm the business accepts orders through each destination and that listed options are current. |
Google does not establish comparative conversion rates for these channels in the cited help pages, so there is no evidence-based universal ranking. Instead, assess whether a route is available on the actual profile, matches the customer’s intent, and can be kept current and monitored.

Set up the profile so contact routes work
Claim and verify the profile
Claim and verify the Business Profile before relying on its editing controls. Google says verification is required for a business to show on Search and Maps and for profile edits to take effect. See Google’s verification guidance.
Keep core business information accurate
Review the customer-facing profile for the correct phone, address or service area, hours, and website. Google may use information from sources beyond the business owner, so check what actually appears and use the available edit or correction process when details are wrong. Its overview of how Google sources and updates Business Profile information explains why the displayed result can require attention.

Use a direct, location-appropriate phone number
Google recommends a number for the individual business location, under the business’s direct control, and a local number where possible. It does not allow premium numbers or phone numbers and URLs that redirect customers to unrelated landing pages or other businesses. Review Google’s phone-number and website guidelines before adding or changing contact details.
Add messaging only if it is available and staffed
For profiles with the feature, configure text or WhatsApp contact in the profile’s contact settings, then inspect the customer-facing profile to confirm what appears. Availability is limited to select regions and profiles. Google’s guidance on text and WhatsApp contact also says that when both are configured, only the text-message option displays.

Review booking and order destinations
Google supports profile links for appointments, reservations, food orders, and shopping orders, as well as links to menus or service lists. Some transaction links may come from a third-party provider or automated Google data. If multiple options appear, choose a preferred link where that control is available; remove an unsuitable provider link through the profile controls. Consult Google’s guidance on links for local businesses and verify the live profile, since provider participation and availability can vary.
Important limits: messaging history ended, but contact options remain
Google ended Business Profile chat and call history on July 31, 2024. This is not the same as removing every way to contact a business from Search and Maps: Google says customers can still contact businesses there, and eligible businesses in select regions may add text or WhatsApp contact. Do not plan around the retired native chat-history feature or assume messaging is available to every profile. See Google’s notice about the end of Business Profile chat and call history.

Handle address display correctly for service-area businesses
A business that travels to customers rather than serving them at a staffed storefront should follow Google’s address-display rules. In particular, a home-based operator who visits customers should generally hide the residential address and use service-area settings instead. The appropriate setup depends on how the business serves customers; review Google’s representation guidelines rather than displaying a home location as a walk-in address.
