Back up your Galaxy S23 and check what the backup includes before installing a major One UI update. A practical starting point is Samsung Cloud: open Settings > Accounts and backup > Samsung Cloud > Back up data, select the available categories, tap Back up now, and wait for the process to finish. Menu labels and available options can vary by software version, carrier, and region.
Samsung’s guidance recommends keeping a copy of important data so it can be restored if it is lost or damaged. That makes backup sensible preparation; it does not mean a One UI update normally erases data or that Samsung requires a backup before every update.

Back up your Galaxy S23 with Samsung Cloud
- Make sure you can sign in to the Samsung account used on the phone, then connect to a reliable network.
- Open Settings > Accounts and backup > Samsung Cloud. If the labels differ, look under Accounts and backup for the cloud-backup option.
- Tap Back up data and review the categories shown on your S23. Select the data you want to include.
- Tap Back up now. Keep the phone connected while the backup runs; when it finishes, tap Done if prompted.
- Check the displayed completion status and verify especially important content in the relevant Samsung account or app. Do not assume an item is covered just because a backup completed.
Samsung Cloud can include categories such as call and message history, device-saved contacts and calendar data, selected settings, apps and Samsung app data, Samsung Notes, Samsung Internet, and Gallery-related data. The categories available depend on the device and software. Samsung’s S23-series manual also cautions that some data is not backed up. Choose an additional backup route for important data
A second copy can help cover content that is missing from one method. Pick a route based on the data you need, where you want the copy stored, and whether you can verify it afterward.

Check what your backup does not include
- Samsung Cloud: Samsung’s Singapore guidance says Google-account contacts and calendars are not synchronized through Samsung Cloud. It also says files larger than 1 GB cannot be backed up there. Supported items and availability depend on country, carrier, and model. See Samsung Singapore’s Samsung Cloud guidance.
- Other exclusions: The S23 manual says some data is excluded, while Smart Switch has transfer restrictions, including for DRM-protected content and some third-party messenger data. Check coverage in the relevant app or account rather than treating one method as a complete image of the phone.
- Photos, notes, messages, and files: Check the relevant backup category or service directly for the content you care about. For particularly important items, keep or verify a separate copy.
Before installing the One UI update
- Confirm the backup shows as completed, not still in progress or awaiting a connection.
- Verify that the important content you intended to protect appears in the chosen account, app, computer, or removable storage.
- If using Smart Switch, allow time for the transfer and keep the phone sufficiently charged; first use may require permissions.
Samsung describes backup as a way to restore data if it is lost, including after an unintended factory reset. It does not establish that a major One UI update routinely wipes a Galaxy S23, so treat the backup as prudent protection rather than an indication that data loss is expected.
