When a Mac download fails, first check the browser’s download list and save location. Then match the symptom to its likely cause: a paused transfer, missing file, full storage, inaccessible folder, website restriction, network problem, or security warning. Use the steps below to narrow it down before changing broader settings.
Start by identifying what failed
Check the browser’s download list and note whether the transfer is active or paused, marked complete, incomplete, or blocked. If it says complete but you cannot find the file, check the download destination before downloading again. If the file is present but will not open, it may need to be extracted or opened with a suitable app.

Also check the scope of the problem: does it affect one file, one website, one browser, every browser, or other devices on the same network? That distinction helps separate a file or site issue from a Mac or connection issue.
Check Safari’s download list and destination
- Open the download list: In Safari, click Show Downloads. If a transfer is paused, resume it.
- Locate a completed file: Click the magnifying-glass control beside its name. Safari may not locate it if you moved the file or changed the download location.
- Confirm the destination: Go to Safari > Settings > General > File download location and check where new downloads are saved.
- Retry an incomplete or damaged transfer: Download the file again. Some links do not expose a downloadable file.
If the file downloaded but will not open, check whether it is an archive that needs decompressing or a disk image that needs opening. Make sure you have an appropriate app. Only open software from a source you trust and expected. See Apple’s Safari download guidance.

Use Chrome’s error message to choose the next step
These explanations apply to messages shown by Chrome; another browser may use different wording. Google’s Chrome download-error guide maps common messages to these causes and actions:

| Disk full | The Mac does not have enough available storage. | Free space and empty the Trash, then retry. |
| Insufficient permissions or System busy | Chrome cannot save to the selected location, or the system is temporarily busy. | Retry and select an accessible folder such as Desktop or Documents. |
| No file or File missing | The website’s file may have moved or no longer exist. | Check the link or contact the site owner. |
| Needs authorisation or Forbidden | The site or server restricts access to the file. | Sign in if the site requires it, or ask the site owner for access. |
| Network error | The connection failed or was interrupted. | Check the connection and try again later. |
Check available storage and the save folder
If a browser reports that the disk is full, check the Mac’s available storage and remove files you no longer need. Deleting files does not free their space until you empty the Trash. Apple’s storage guidance covers freeing space for downloads, installations, and copying.

If the destination folder cannot be accessed, try a folder you can write to, such as Documents or Desktop. If macOS asks whether an app may access the Downloads folder, review the permission for that app in System Settings > Privacy & Security > Files and Folders. Allow access only when it is needed for the download and you trust the app; see Apple’s Downloads-folder access guidance.

Find out whether the website, browser, or network is responsible
Try downloading a file from another website, then test the affected link in another browser if available. If the same site fails across browsers, the file may be unavailable or access-controlled. If several sites fail in one browser but work in another, focus on that browser’s settings. If multiple browsers or devices fail on the same network, investigate the network or contact its provider rather than repeatedly changing Safari settings.

For Safari-only problems
Apple recommends targeted checks for site-specific failures: try a Private Window, temporarily disable extensions, and review relevant site data and settings under Safari’s Privacy, Security, Websites, or Advanced controls. If testing points to stored data for that site, remove that site’s data only; you may be signed out. Consider whether iCloud Private Relay, VPN or security software, or custom proxy or DNS settings are affecting access. Change one item at a time so you can identify the cause, and avoid broad security changes. Apple’s Safari troubleshooting guide describes these checks.
For Wi-Fi or connection problems
Check that the Mac is connected to Wi-Fi, then restart the Mac and verify that the date and time are correct. Update macOS when possible, check whether VPN or security software is interfering, and review the router setup. Apple’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting steps include using Wireless Diagnostics when appropriate. Custom proxy or DNS settings can also affect internet access; compare another browser or device on the same network before changing them.

Treat a security warning as different from a failed transfer
A browser may block a file because it is dangerous, suspicious, unverified, or insecure. That is a safety decision, not simply a connection or storage error. Google’s Chrome guidance on blocked downloads says to take warnings seriously; it states, “When Chrome blocks a download, you’re protected and don’t need to take further action.” Apple likewise advises against opening unexpected software or software from an untrusted source.

Use separate steps for macOS updates and installers
A failed macOS update or installer is not the same as an ordinary browser download. Start with Apple’s guidance for macOS update and installation errors, including checks for available storage and a stable internet connection. For persistent problems, Apple describes installing from macOS Recovery, trying Safe Mode when installing through the App Store or Software Update, and using Disk Utility to repair the startup disk where appropriate.
If an installer is reported as damaged or unverifiable, Apple advises deleting it and downloading it again after repairing the disk. Firmware revive or restore and erasing the Mac are high-impact escalations, not general fixes for web downloads.
