A Chrome extension can add reply shortcuts beside ChatGPT messages by using a content script to interact with the page. The key design choices are how narrowly to run that script, how to keep its controls working as ChatGPT’s interface changes, and whether a click drafts a reply for review or sends it.
How reply buttons fit into a Chrome extension
Chrome content scripts are designed to interact with webpages. They can use the Document Object Model (DOM) to read page details and change page content, while running in an isolated JavaScript world separate from the page’s own scripts. That separation does not prevent a content script from working with the page’s DOM.

For a reply-button feature, the general flow is to locate an assistant message, add or associate a control with it, and respond to a click by placing chosen text in ChatGPT’s composer. This describes a possible architecture, not verified details of a particular extension’s source code.
Choose how and where the script runs
Chrome documents three ways to inject content scripts: declare them statically in manifest.json, register them dynamically, or inject them programmatically. A static declaration uses match patterns to specify which pages the script can run on. The right choice depends on the extension’s requirements; the available evidence does not establish which method a specific reply-button extension uses.

For a feature intended for ChatGPT, limit page access to the relevant site where feasible. Chrome Web Store policy calls for requesting the narrowest permissions necessary and explaining data practices before installation. If the extension handles user data, its privacy policy and in-product notices must accurately describe what is collected, how it is used, and whether it is shared. Data collection, use, or transmission should be limited to what the disclosed single purpose requires.
Make the button’s effect explicit
A one-click control can mean different things. It might put a suggested reply in the composer for the user to inspect, or it might submit a message. Those actions have different consequences and should not be presented as interchangeable.
Chrome Web Store policy says an extension cannot send messages on a user’s behalf without giving the user the ability to confirm both the message content and its intended recipients. A draft-first flow makes that review step clear: the user sees the proposed text in the composer and chooses whether to send it. If a design submits messages, the confirmation mechanism needs to let the user inspect and approve the content and recipient before sending.

Account for ChatGPT interface changes
Chrome’s content-script documentation explains how extensions can interact with webpages; it does not guarantee specific ChatGPT element selectors or composer behavior. The current selectors for assistant messages, the way the composer accepts programmatic input, and the behavior after a button click are implementation details that need validation against the live site.

That makes resilience a central engineering concern. A change to ChatGPT’s page structure or input behavior can break a selector-based feature even if the extension’s manifest and injection approach remain valid. Any claim that a particular implementation works reliably should be supported by current validation; Chrome’s general documentation alone cannot establish that.

Reply shortcuts can be useful when a user repeatedly gives similar instructions, such as tailoring a cover letter and résumé for different job applications. A community commenter described that repetition as a task where reusable prompt buttons could save time. That is one person’s account, not evidence of a broad user trend or measured productivity gain.

Likewise, other browser extensions may offer saved prompt buttons, keyboard shortcuts, synchronized settings, or optional auto-send, but those adjacent features do not establish what this particular extension includes. Without verified source code, a current listing, a privacy statement, and test results, publication status, exact behavior, compatibility, reliability, accessibility, and user adoption should not be assumed.
