But Apple’s “up to” speed claims are not a universal measure of how much faster every app will run—and its comparison used systems with different memory capacities. Whether it makes sense to replace an M1 Ultra depends on your software, workload, configuration, and the cost of moving to the new machine.
What changed between the M1 Ultra and M5 Ultra Mac Studio?
The clearest differences are the M5 Ultra’s higher listed maximum CPU and GPU core counts, a much larger available unified-memory configuration, faster listed memory bandwidth, newer connectivity, and updated media capabilities. The M5 Ultra Mac Studio was announced on August 25, 2026, with U.S. availability beginning September 22. Apple’s current Mac Studio technical specifications describe the M5 generation; they should not be read as a complete specification sheet for every M1 Ultra configuration.

How much faster is the M5 Ultra in Apple’s tests?
Apple reported the following maximum improvements over Mac Studio with M1 Ultra in selected applications and tasks. These are vendor-reported, workload-specific results—not an independent review or a general speed multiplier.
- CopyCat ML training in Foundry Nuke: up to 15.4 times faster.
- LLM prompt processing in LM Studio: up to 9.8 times faster.
- Text-to-image performance: up to 8.2 times faster.
- Scene rendering in Maxon Redshift: up to 4.7 times faster.
Apple says it tested preproduction systems in August 2026. The M5 Ultra system had a 36-core CPU, 80-core GPU, and 256GB of memory; the M1 Ultra system had a 20-core CPU, 64-core GPU, and 64GB of memory. Because both the chip generation and memory capacity differ, the results do not isolate the effect of the processor alone or establish a like-for-like price/performance comparison. Apple describes the results as approximate Mac Studio performance and says it used selected industry-standard benchmarks. See the full Apple announcement and test note.

Which workloads are most likely to benefit?
Local AI, machine learning, and image generation
Apple’s largest reported gains are in named machine-learning, LLM, and text-to-image tasks. The M5 Ultra’s maximum 512GB unified-memory configuration may also matter for workflows that need to keep larger models or datasets in memory, but the available sources do not quantify performance for every model, app, or memory configuration. Match Apple’s examples to the tools you actually use rather than assuming every AI task will approach the reported multipliers.
3D rendering
The Redshift result—up to 4.7 times faster scene rendering—is relevant if that software and workload resemble your own. Render time can vary with scene complexity, settings, and software behavior; Apple’s launch figure is not a promise that all render jobs will finish at that ratio.

Video and media production
The listed codec acceleration and engine counts may be useful for compatible media workflows. Apple’s claim of up to 33 simultaneous streams of 8K ProRes 422 at 30 fps describes a manufacturer-stated playback capability, not a guarantee for a real editing timeline with effects, compositing, storage limits, or a particular application. Confirm that your software supports the relevant hardware paths and test the full media workflow before treating the stream figure as a project benchmark.

Software development and general professional work
The cited performance figures do not establish a speedup for compiling code, running virtual machines, office work, or every other professional application. For those uses, compare task completion time on the tools and projects that matter to you. The M5 Ultra’s additional memory headroom could be valuable if your current system regularly runs short of memory, but the sources do not supply a universal benefit figure for that situation.

Do the new ports and display support matter for your setup?
Thunderbolt 5, Wi‑Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, 10Gb Ethernet, and support for up to eight external displays are listed for M5 Ultra Mac Studio. Thunderbolt 5’s stated bandwidth is up to 120Gb/s. These specifications can matter if you are planning a high-throughput external-storage setup, a multi-display workstation, or a supported professional synchronization workflow using genlock over USB-C.
Port and display counts alone do not establish that a particular combination will work as intended. Check compatibility across the Mac, display or storage device, cable, adapters, and application. The cited sources do not provide a like-for-like M1 Ultra connectivity comparison, so they establish what Apple lists for M5 Ultra rather than every difference from an older system.

(Apps are available on the App Store.)
- ADVANCED CAMERA AND AUDIO — Look sharp and sound great with a 1080p FaceTime HD camera, a studio-quality three-mic array, and a six-speaker sound system with Spatial Audio.
What does the M5 Ultra cost, and what would an upgrade really cost?
Apple announced a U.S. starting price of $5,499 for M5 Ultra Mac Studio, with availability beginning September 22, 2026. That is a dated U.S. launch price, not a worldwide quote or a price for every configuration. Memory and storage choices change the configured price, and Apple said the 512GB memory option would arrive in late October 2026. Check Apple’s store in your region for current availability and pricing.

The cited sources do not establish current resale prices for M1 Ultra systems. To estimate your own net cost, compare the price of the exact M5 Ultra configuration you need with realistic offers for your M1 Ultra’s configuration and condition. How to decide whether to upgrade
- Identify the bottleneck. Note which applications or jobs take too long, fail to fit in memory, or are constrained by your current storage, display, or connectivity setup.
- Match the task to the evidence. Apple’s strongest performance claims cover specific AI, ML, and Redshift workloads. For other apps, seek results for your exact software and project rather than applying those figures broadly.
- Compare memory needs, not just chip labels. Apple tested a 64GB M1 Ultra against a 256GB M5 Ultra and lists M5 Ultra configurations up to 512GB. Choose a memory configuration based on the workload you need to run.
- Check the whole workstation. Verify that your displays, cables, storage devices, software, and any genlock workflow support the connections and capabilities you plan to use.
- Calculate the actual net cost. Use a current local price for the configuration you want and a realistic resale offer for your own M1 Ultra. The sources cited here do not provide the latter.
If your work closely matches Apple’s tested AI or rendering tasks, needs substantially more unified memory, or depends on the newer connectivity and media capabilities, the M5 Ultra offers concrete reasons to consider an upgrade. If your M1 Ultra already meets your workload’s speed and memory needs, and the new features do not solve a specific limitation, Apple’s selected benchmark results alone are not enough to establish that replacing it is worthwhile.
