Nikon Lens Format: What DX and FX Markings Tell You

For a Nikon NIKKOR lens, look for DX in the lens name or on its barrel. Nikon describes FX/35mm DSLR lenses as lenses without a DX designation. That marking tells you about the sensor area the lens is designed to cover; it does not, by itself, confirm that the lens will fit or retain every feature on a particular camera.

How to tell whether a Nikon lens is DX or FX

  1. Read the lens name. Nikon says the DX designation appears in the lens name. For example, the name AF-S DX Zoom-NIKKOR 12-24mm f/4G IF-ED includes DX. Nikon’s FX/DX overview gives this example.
  2. Check the barrel. Look for DX printed on the lens itself. Nikon’s naming guidance identifies DX as the marking to seek.
  3. If there is no DX marking, verify the exact model. Nikon’s DSLR catalog describes its FX/35mm lenses as those without a DX designation. For a third-party lens, use that manufacturer’s model documentation; Nikon’s naming convention should not be assumed to apply to every brand.

DX and FX are sensor-format terms, not focal-length labels. Nikon gives approximate sensor dimensions of 24 × 16 mm for DX and 36 × 24 mm for FX. The focal length printed on the lens remains the same whichever camera format you use; a smaller sensor captures a narrower field of view. Nikon’s overview describes these approximate dimensions.

What changes when you put the lens on a different-format DSLR?

Lens and camera What happens Practical effect
FX lens on a Nikon DX DSLR The DX sensor records a narrower portion of the scene. Nikon illustrates the effect with a 24 mm lens: on DX, its field of view is approximately like that of a 36 mm lens on FX, using an approximate 1.5× crop factor. The lens remains 24 mm. Nikon FX/DX overview.
DX lens on a Nikon FX DSLR Nikon says the camera selects DX crop mode and records the center of the FX sensor. The image uses less than the full FX sensor area. The resulting image area and resolution are therefore not those of a full-sensor FX capture. Nikon FX/DX overview; Nikon DX lens page.

Nikon characterizes its DX-NIKKOR lenses as optimized for DX-format DSLR cameras and designed to cover the smaller DX sensor area. The format designation helps explain image coverage, but it does not establish mount fit or guarantee identical operation on every camera.

Check mount and camera compatibility separately

A lens can be DX or FX and still require a separate compatibility check. Confirm the camera mount, then check the exact lens and camera combination for autofocus, exposure, and other supported functions. This matters especially when adapting older DSLR lenses to a mirrorless camera.

Using an F-mount DSLR lens on a Nikon Z camera

Nikon identifies the FTZ II as an adapter for using F-mount DSLR lenses on Z cameras. Nikon specifies full autofocus and exposure support for certain lens categories, including listed FX and DX AF-S, AF-P, and AF-I lenses; that qualification should not be generalized to every older lens. Use Nikon’s FTZ II compatibility information to check the exact pairing. The DX/FX label alone does not tell you whether an adapter is needed or which features will work.

Using a DX lens on a Nikon 35mm film camera

Nikon’s DSLR lens catalog says DX lenses are not compatible with Nikon 35mm film cameras. See Nikon’s DSLR lens catalog for that scope.

Before buying or mounting a lens

  • Identify the full lens model and look for DX in its name or on the barrel.
  • Confirm whether the lens and camera use compatible mounts; sensor format does not establish physical fit.
  • For a DX lens on an FX DSLR, account for the camera’s DX crop mode and the smaller recorded sensor area.
  • For an FX lens on a DX DSLR, expect a narrower field of view; do not treat the crop as a change to the lens’s stated focal length.
  • For an adapted lens, check autofocus and exposure support for the specific body and lens rather than relying on the DX/FX marking.
