For most students and general users, the M5 MacBook Air is the better-value choice if its memory and storage meet your needs. Choose a MacBook Pro when you can point to a demanding compute, graphics, AI, or simulation workload—or when you specifically want its Liquid Retina XDR display and the higher memory capacity or bandwidth of an M5 Pro or M5 Max model. “MacBook Pro” covers several machines at very different prices, so compare exact configurations rather than just the product names.
The prices below are Apple’s U.S. launch starting prices announced March 3, 2026, not current quotes or matched configurations. Apple’s performance and battery figures are manufacturer claims; they are not independent test results.

What matters most in the comparison?
Price and configuration
The Air has the lower entry price. But a fair comparison means checking the memory and storage on the specific machines you are considering, rather than treating the cheapest Air and a higher-tier Pro as equivalent configurations. Apple lists 512GB starting storage for the Air, configurable up to 4TB. M5 Pro MacBook Pro configurations start with 1TB storage and support up to 64GB unified memory; M5 Max configurations start with 2TB and support up to 128GB unified memory.
Display and size
The Air offers a 13.6-inch or 15.3-inch Liquid Retina display. Apple’s comparison page lists 14.2-inch and 16.2-inch Liquid Retina XDR displays for MacBook Pro. The 15-inch Air is a larger-screen option than the 14-inch Pro, while the 16-inch Pro is the largest display in this comparison. These are differences in size and display class, not proof that one screen will look better to every viewer. Apple’s Mac comparison page lists the current model and display combinations.

Performance, memory, and bandwidth
The M5 Air has a 10-core CPU and an up-to-10-core GPU. Apple positions it for productivity, creative work, and AI. M5 Pro is aimed at more complex work, with up to 64GB unified memory and up to 307GB/s memory bandwidth. M5 Max is intended for especially demanding work, with up to 128GB unified memory and up to 614GB/s bandwidth. Those higher ceilings matter when your applications and projects can use them; they are not a reason by themselves to buy the most expensive model.

Portability, battery, and connections
Apple describes the M5 Air as fanless and rates it for up to 18 hours of battery life. That is a published maximum, not a guarantee for every workload. The information here does not establish a matched battery comparison with a Pro model, so it would be misleading to assume a specific Pro battery disadvantage.

Apple lists two Thunderbolt 4 ports, MagSafe charging, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and support for up to two external displays for the M5 Air. If you need particular ports or more external displays, verify the exact Pro model’s specifications before buying rather than assuming all MacBook Pros share the same limits.
Choose by the work you actually do
Everyday work, school, and travel
For writing, browsing, video calls, study, and general productivity, the Air is the sensible default if its memory and storage configuration fits. Its fanless design is a concrete advantage for people who value a quieter machine, and Apple rates it for up to 18 hours of battery life.

Moderate creative projects
The M5 Air can be a reasonable choice for creative work that fits its configuration. Apple presents it as capable of creative workflows and lists a GPU with up to 10 cores. Editing photos or making other creative projects does not automatically mean you need a Pro; consider the size of your projects, the applications you use, and whether you are running into limits on your current machine.

Consider M5 Pro if you regularly work with tasks such as algorithm optimization or large image libraries—the kinds of examples Apple uses to describe its intended audience. The extra memory and bandwidth can be relevant when those workflows need them. The choice should follow a real workload constraint, not vague hopes of “future-proofing.”

Heavy graphics, local AI, and simulation
M5 Max is for workloads that can use its higher graphics capability, memory ceiling, and bandwidth. Apple’s examples include engineers running rigorous simulations. If your work does not need that capacity, paying for it may not improve your day-to-day experience in a meaningful way.
A bigger screen
Choose between the 15-inch Air, 14-inch Pro, and 16-inch Pro based on the screen size and display class you want, as well as the configuration you need. The 15-inch Air gives you a 15.3-inch Liquid Retina display; the Pro family offers 14.2-inch or 16.2-inch Liquid Retina XDR displays.

Apple reports selected benchmark and application results, not guaranteed speedups across all software or tasks. For the M5 Air, Apple says AI task performance is up to 4× versus the M4 Air and up to 9.5× versus the M1 Air. It also reports up to 6.9× faster AI video enhancement and up to 6.5× faster ray-traced 3D rendering versus the M1 Air, along with up to 2.7× faster image processing versus the M1 Air. Those figures refer to Apple’s specified tests and comparison systems.
