Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchA VPN protects the connection from your device to the VPN provider: when the app encrypts traffic, people monitoring your home Wi-Fi and your internet service provider generally cannot read the contents of that tunnel. But the VPN provider becomes an intermediary you must trust. A VPN does not secure your router, remove malware, protect every device automatically, or make you anonymous.
What a VPN can protect on home Wi-Fi
A VPN app routes covered traffic through a server operated by the VPN provider and encrypts it between your device and that endpoint. Someone watching the local Wi-Fi connection can see that data is moving, but should not be able to read the encrypted contents. Your ISP typically sees a connection to the VPN server rather than the contents of the tunnel. This protection depends on the app encrypting the traffic in question; implementations and behavior can vary.

The Federal Trade Commission describes the trade-off directly: “A VPN app will typically obscure the content of your traffic from your internet service provider or public Wi-Fi provider, but it doesn’t render you anonymous.” FTC, “In the market for a VPN app?”

It does not make you anonymous
A VPN changes which intermediary handles your traffic; it does not make observation disappear. Your VPN provider handles the tunneled connection, so you need to assess its privacy practices and app behavior. Websites can still identify you through details you provide, such as an email address, and may be able to tell that you are connecting through a VPN. The FTC also warns that some VPN apps may request sensitive permissions or share data with third parties.

- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
It does not secure your router or the whole home network
A VPN app protects traffic from the device running it, subject to the app’s coverage and encryption. It does not change your router’s Wi-Fi encryption, administrator password, software, or firewall settings. Nor does installing a VPN on one phone or computer automatically protect other devices on the network.
It does not remove malware or fix a compromised device
A VPN is not a substitute for a device’s security features or software updates. If a device is infected or compromised, a VPN does not repair it. The FTC recommends using built-in security features and keeping connected-device software current: securing internet-connected devices at home.

It does not make HTTPS unnecessary
HTTPS encrypts information exchanged between a browser or app and a particular website or service. A VPN adds a separate encrypted connection from your device to the VPN endpoint. The layers serve different purposes: HTTPS protects the site connection, while the VPN changes the intermediary that can observe traffic and protects the device-to-provider segment. Neither should be treated as a guarantee that every kind of metadata is hidden from every intermediary. The FTC says most websites use encryption today and advises checking for HTTPS or a browser lock indicator: FTC guidance on public Wi-Fi and encryption.
VPN, Wi-Fi encryption, and HTTPS compared
| Layer | What it protects | What it does not do |
|---|---|---|
| Home Wi-Fi WPA2 or WPA3 | Encrypts the wireless link between devices and the router, helping protect it from nearby Wi-Fi observers. | Does not provide anonymity or ensure that connections beyond the router are encrypted. |
| VPN app encryption | Encrypts covered traffic between the device and the VPN endpoint, limiting what local network observers and typically the ISP can read about its contents. | Does not hide activity from the VPN provider, guarantee anonymity, or secure a router or compromised device. |
| HTTPS | Encrypts information exchanged between a browser or app and a particular website or service. | Does not encrypt the entire home network or conceal all metadata from every intermediary. |
These are distinct layers, and the behavior of VPN apps is not identical across products. See the FTC’s guidance on VPN apps, home Wi-Fi security, and HTTPS and public Wi-Fi.

How to secure home Wi-Fi, with or without a VPN
Use the router’s security settings and maintain the devices connected to it. The FTC recommends these measures for a home network:
- Choose WPA3 Personal, or WPA2 Personal if WPA3 is unavailable.
- Change the router’s default administrator credentials and the network name.
- Install router software updates.
- Keep the router firewall enabled.
- Consider a guest network for visitors’ devices.
- If an old router supports neither WPA2 nor WPA3, consider replacing it.
For details, see the FTC’s home Wi-Fi security guidance. These router steps protect the wireless network; they are not prerequisites for using a VPN and a VPN does not perform them for you.

How to choose and use a VPN carefully
- Check what traffic the app covers and whether it encrypts that traffic; do not assume every app works the same way.
- Review the provider’s privacy terms and the permissions the app requests. A VPN provider is an intermediary, not an invisible conduit.
- Keep the VPN app and the device’s operating system updated, and use the device’s security features.
- Continue to use HTTPS when visiting websites; a VPN is not a replacement for an encrypted site connection.
The FTC reported in 2018 that researchers who studied almost 300 VPN apps found potential privacy and security risks with some apps, including apps that did not use encryption, requested sensitive permissions, or shared data with third parties. That historical study is not a current census, does not establish what proportion of today’s apps have those problems, and is not a measure of any particular VPN service’s effectiveness.
