Uber had the higher median gross trip pay in Gridwise’s comparison of tracked drivers’ 2025 data: $21.18 per work hour, versus $19.48 for Lyft. Those figures are before vehicle expenses and do not predict what an individual driver will take home. The better choice depends on local demand, total time online, miles and costs, incentives, and which benefits you qualify for.
Does Uber or Lyft pay drivers more?
In Gridwise’s tracked-driver data for 2025, reported in 2026, median total trip pay was $21.18 per work hour for Uber and $19.48 for Lyft. These are gross medians from Gridwise’s sample, not guaranteed wages or a forecast for every driver or city. See Gridwise’s Uber driver pay analysis and Lyft driver pay analysis for its definitions and data.

Including bonuses and promotions, Gridwise reported gross median pay of $21.92 per hour for Uber and $20.38 for Lyft in the same 2025 data. Bonuses and promotions can vary by place and time, so these figures should not be treated as a recurring rate. Gridwise’s Q2 2026 rideshare report also illustrates that fares, platform fee shares, premium-trip mix, and driver gross pay shift over time.

Neither comparison subtracts the costs of driving. Fuel, maintenance, depreciation, insurance, vehicle financing or rental, taxes, unpaid waiting, and repositioning between trips can materially change what remains. A platform or third-party hourly figure may count only a defined portion of a shift; it is not necessarily pay for every hour spent available to work.

For example, Uber’s California Proposition 22 FAQ defines active time as beginning when a driver accepts a request and ending when the trip is completed; online waiting time is excluded. Lyft’s California page defines booked time from acceptance through passenger drop-off. Those California definitions show why a rate tied to trip time cannot be compared directly with a full-shift hourly result.
How the pay rules and offers differ
California pay floors are not national guarantees
In California, Lyft says its earnings guarantee is at least 120% of minimum wage for booked time, plus $0.37 per booked mile while booked with a passenger. Uber’s California Proposition 22 FAQ describes a floor of 120% of applicable minimum wage for active time, plus $0.37 per vehicle mile, with eligible earnings calculated over two weeks and a top-up if they fall below the floor. These rules apply to California and use platform-specific definitions; they are not directly comparable with each other or a promise of the same hourly pay across a full shift.
Lyft says drivers may see a route and total earnings before accepting an upfront offer, along with an estimated hourly rate. The company explicitly says that estimated rate is not a guarantee of actual hourly earnings. Lyft also says that if the total Lyft fee from all rides is more than 30% at month-end, the driver receives an earnings adjustment. That adjustment is a separate feature, not a blanket promise that drivers keep a fixed percentage of every fare. See Lyft’s driver pay information.

Which app offers more flexibility?
At a broad level, both platforms are app-based driving work. Lyft tells California drivers: “When you drive with Lyft, you call the shots. Need flexibility? Drive whenever (and wherever) you want.” That is Lyft’s promotional description, not evidence that it offers more useful flexibility than Uber for every driver.
Practical flexibility depends on when and where you drive, the offers available, and whether the app’s current features suit your routine. If destination controls, pausing, or limits on accepting trips matter to you, check the current settings and terms in both apps for your market rather than assuming one platform is more accommodating.
What benefits can drivers receive?
Benefits are tied to geography and eligibility, and the clocks used to qualify may count only certain trip periods. The examples below illustrate why a driver should check the current local terms before relying on a stipend, earnings floor, or insurance coverage.

California
Lyft’s California driver page describes a floor of 120% of minimum wage for booked time plus $0.37 per booked mile. It also describes a healthcare subsidy for drivers who average at least 15 hours of booked time per week in a calendar quarter and submit proof of qualifying health insurance, as well as occupational accident insurance for on-the-job injuries.
Uber’s California FAQ describes a healthcare stipend for drivers with at least 15 active hours per week in a quarter and qualifying health insurance. It also describes injury protection for injuries while online. Some top-ups, stipends, and insurance-premium values may be reported as taxable income, according to Uber; drivers should consult a tax professional about their own circumstances. Details are on Lyft’s California driver information page and Uber’s California Proposition 22 FAQ.
Massachusetts
Uber’s Massachusetts help page sets out a state-specific minimum earnings rate and a two-week calculation. It also describes paid sick leave accruing at one hour per 30 hours of active time, up to 40 hours annually; occupational accident insurance for qualifying Massachusetts rides during online, waiting, pickup, and trip periods; and a portable health fund. Drivers averaging at least 15 hours weekly in a quarter may qualify for a half stipend, while those averaging 25 or more may qualify for a full stipend. Qualifying time on other rideshare platforms can be combined for the health fund. The page also describes a family medical leave payment. Check Uber’s current Massachusetts driver benefits page for the operative rate and eligibility, which can change. Uber’s Massachusetts benefits announcement describes the agreement behind the program; the current help page is the more useful reference for its terms.

New York
Lyft’s New York State guide distinguishes trips outside New York City from NYC trips covered by TLC minimum-pay rules. It reports a non-NYC minimum updated as of March 2026 and describes paid sick and safe leave accruing at one hour per 30 hours of rides, subject to a stated annual accrual cap. The guide also lists Express Drive rentals in select cities and requirements for drivers, vehicles, documents, and smartphones. Because New York City and the rest of the state have different rules, check the applicable section of Lyft’s New York driver guide rather than applying one region’s rate statewide.

Platform coverage varies by trip phase and jurisdiction, and it does not automatically replace a driver’s personal auto policy. Lyft’s insurance overview says contingent comprehensive and collision coverage is available only where the driver also has comprehensive and collision coverage on their personal policy; the coverage is limited to the car’s actual cash value and has a stated $2,500 deductible. Uber’s Massachusetts occupational accident coverage addresses different risks and time periods, so it should not be treated as equivalent to Lyft’s coverage. Review Lyft’s insurance overview, the applicable platform terms, and your insurer’s rideshare rules before driving.

How to compare the apps for your own shifts
If both services operate where you drive, a same-hours comparison is more useful than relying on a national gross median. Use a consistent tracking period and include time spent available, not only time with a passenger.
- Drive with each app on comparable days and hours in the same market. Record total time online, not just active or booked time.
- For each platform, record gross fares, tips, promotions, top-ups, completed trips, and miles driven. Include miles spent repositioning between trips when possible.
- Subtract your actual fuel, maintenance, depreciation, insurance, financing or rental costs, and applicable taxes to estimate net results.
- Check what time counts toward any local earnings floor or benefit threshold, and whether waiting time is excluded.
- Compare offer availability and incentive reliability against the schedule you can actually work, then review local vehicle, insurance, and benefit requirements.
This approach will not guarantee future earnings; it gives you a clearer comparison of your own shifts than a gross national average can.
