There is no single best AI answering service for every small or midsize business. The right choice depends on how many calls you receive, what callers need, whether the service must complete tasks such as booking appointments, and when a person must take over. The options below include AI receptionists and, separately, human answering services; they are not all like-for-like products.
One important limit: the available information supports useful profiles for ten services, but not an eleventh verified recommendation. My AI Front Desk appears in a comparison listing, but its current offer and features could not be confirmed. This guide therefore compares the substantiated candidates rather than presenting an unsupported ranking of eleven.

What an AI answering service does—and what to check
An AI answering service handles calls to a business line using information and instructions configured for that business. Depending on the product and plan, it may collect caller details, send a summary or transcript, route a call to a person, or handle an appointment workflow. Broad category descriptions are not proof that every provider offers every capability.
“Books appointments” can mean different things: the service may text a booking link, collect a request for staff to follow up, or book directly into a calendar during the call. Likewise, a call transfer is not the same as a human receptionist taking over the conversation. Confirm the exact behavior in the vendor’s current documentation and test it with realistic calls.

Rosie’s official site describes 24/7 call answering trained on a business’s information, appointment handling, call summaries, transcripts, recordings, and live transfers when needed. Its site advertises service starting at $49 per month and a seven-day free trial. An independent comparison distinguishes appointment links on a lower tier from direct booking and transfers on a higher tier; verify the current plan grid before relying on that distinction. Smith.ai: AI answering with a live escalation option
Smith.ai lists 24/7 AI call answering, recordings, transcriptions and summaries, lead qualification, routing, scheduling, and integrations. The company says complex calls can be escalated to a live North America-based receptionist. Its pricing page lists a Free plan at $0 for 25 calls per month, Pro at $150 per month, and Enterprise at $500 per month, with different included call quantities and per-call rates. Treat these as listed prices, not a guarantee of current availability or fit; check the live pricing page for exact allowances and terms. See Smith.ai pricing.

Dialzara: compare its billing meter with your call pattern
An independent comparison characterizes Dialzara as an entry-price option with a published per-minute overage rate. That distinction makes expected call duration important: calculate likely usage against the current allowance and overage terms rather than judging by the starting price alone. Confirm current pricing and features with Dialzara before deciding; the comparison is not a substitute for current plan documentation.

Goodcall: check how unique callers affect cost

If repeat callers are common for your business, ask how the service defines and counts a unique caller, then estimate the bill using that definition. Verify the current terms directly with Goodcall.
Abby Connect: a hybrid option to investigate
The comparison characterizes Abby Connect as blending human and AI answering. That may be relevant if you want automation for routine calls but a person involved in more conversations. The available information does not establish the current plan terms or precisely which calls are handled by AI versus live staff, so ask the vendor to explain the handoff and staffing model before comparing it with an AI-only service.

Frontdesk: verify the service before shortlisting
Frontdesk appears in the comparison’s capability table, but the available information does not support a detailed profile of its current offer. Confirm its answering workflow, billing unit, human escalation, and integrations directly before treating it as a candidate.
Slang.ai: a restaurant-focused candidate
The comparison describes Slang.ai as focused on restaurant calls, including reservations and integrations; its official site presents it as an AI superhost for restaurants. This vertical focus may be more relevant than a general receptionist’s broad feature list for a restaurant, but confirm which reservation systems and other integrations are currently supported and how booking is completed. See Slang.ai.

Numa: a dealership-oriented product
Numa’s official site positions the product as an AI operating system for car dealerships. The comparison identifies it as dealership-focused and says pricing is not published there. Dealerships should verify the specific service and sales call workflows they need, as well as current pricing, directly with Numa. See Numa.
Ruby: a human receptionist, not an AI equivalent
The comparison identifies Ruby as a human receptionist service. It belongs in a broader evaluation of how to answer calls, but it should not be treated as an AI receptionist with the same automation model. Ruby publishes pricing information; check its current page to compare the human service and terms with the AI options. See Ruby pricing.
PATLive: a human-agent answering option
PATLive is also described as a human-agent service rather than an AI receptionist equivalent. It may be worth comparing if live handling is a priority, but evaluate it on its own staffing, coverage, and pricing terms. PATLive publishes pricing information; confirm the current details on its site. See PATLive pricing.

How to choose the right service
- Estimate the bill using the actual meter. Work out monthly call volume and typical call duration, then apply the vendor’s billing unit: calls, minutes, unique callers, or another allowance. Include overages and plan limits, not just the advertised entry price.
- Define what counts as resolution. Decide whether callers need a message taken, a booking link, an appointment placed directly on a calendar, or an immediate transfer. Ask the vendor to demonstrate the precise flow for your calendar and staff.
- Set rules for human handoff. Identify emergencies, sensitive topics, unusual questions, and requests outside the configured script. Confirm when the system transfers, what information accompanies the transfer, and what happens if no one answers.
- Choose for your call type. General service-business intake, restaurant reservations, and dealership calls are different workflows. A product designed around a specific industry may be a better fit than a longer generic feature list.
- Account for setup and maintenance. Self-service products require someone to enter business information, create instructions, and keep them current. If you need help configuring the system, ask what implementation support is included and compare the total cost.
- Check operational terms before porting or forwarding calls. Confirm supported languages, integrations, call recording and privacy terms, cancellation rules, and what happens to recordings or transcripts when service ends.
Why a human fallback deserves attention
In a SurveyMonkey survey of 2,017 US adults fielded December 10–11, 2025, 79% strongly preferred interacting with a human over an AI agent, and 89% believed companies should always offer an option to speak to a human. SurveyMonkey reports a margin of error of ±2.5 percentage points. Those results describe survey respondents’ stated preferences; they do not show that every caller rejects AI or predict how a particular business’s customers will respond. They do make it sensible to check whether callers can reach a person when the automated flow is not enough. Read SurveyMonkey’s survey page.
