When lxc-create fails, the fix depends on where creation stopped. Read the full command output and LXC log first: the failure may involve configuration, storage or rootfs ownership, a template or image download, or network setup. A container that was created successfully but will not start has a different problem.
First, identify the failing stage
lxc-create creates the persistent container object; starting or executing that container comes later. The Linux Containers manual describes creation as instantiating the root filesystem and adjusting configuration, while its lifecycle documentation distinguishes creation from starting or executing: lxc(7) and lxc-create(1).

Before changing settings, record the exact command and all output, the user who ran it, the host distribution and release, the LXC version, the chosen template and its distribution/release/architecture, and the storage backend. Check whether the command produced an LXC log and preserve it. These details distinguish an environment-specific error from a generic LXC issue.
- Parsing, unknown key, or include-file message: inspect the configuration and defaults.
idmap,newuidmap,newgidmap,chown, or rootfs ownership message: check unprivileged ID mapping and permissions.- A directory or backing store appears before the failure: check storage settings, path permissions, free space, and what the template does next. LXC configuration includes storage-related settings, but there is no universal storage repair: lxc.conf(5).
- Image index, rootfs retrieval, or unpacking message: check the template, image source, network reachability, and installed LXC version.
- Veth or bridge message: investigate network permissions and user-network policy.
Check which configuration and defaults apply
LXC can generate a basic container configuration using defaults recommended by the selected template and additional defaults from default.conf. The configuration manual documents /etc/lxc/default.conf for system containers and ~/.config/lxc/default.conf for unprivileged containers. System configuration is stored in /etc/lxc/lxc.conf or ~/.config/lxc/lxc.conf; it can set values such as default lookup paths and storage backend settings. See the LXC configuration manual.

- Confirm which account ran
lxc-createand whether it was run as root or as an unprivileged user. - Check the applicable configuration paths and verify that any included files exist and are readable.
- Compare each reported key with the manual for the installed LXC version. Do not copy a configuration line from an old forum post without confirming that its syntax applies to your version.
Resolve unprivileged ID-mapping and ownership errors
Unprivileged containers rely on UID and GID mappings to translate container identities to host identities. The LXC security documentation describes newuidmap and newgidmap as helpers for setting up those maps: LXC security. If a log reports no mapping for container root or an error changing ownership of the rootfs, this branch deserves attention.
- Check that the account has subordinate UID and GID ranges and that its mapping configuration is present and consistent with those allocations.
- Confirm that required mapping helpers are installed and usable in the current environment.
- Retry creation after correcting the mapping, then inspect the new log to see whether the failure moved to another stage.
A 2019 mailing-list exchange documented a regular-user creation failure involving a missing ~/.config/lxc/default.conf, “No uid mapping for container root,” and a rootfs ownership error. Do not treat switching to a privileged container as a routine workaround. LXC warns that privileged containers map container UID 0 to host UID 0 and do not provide the same safety as unprivileged containers: LXC security.
Fix configuration-key errors against your installed version
An “Unknown configuration key” message means LXC did not accept a key in the configuration it read; the key may be misspelled, unsupported, or written in syntax that does not match the installed version. A 2018 Ubuntu 18.04 / LXC 3.0.2 forum report involved lxc.id_map and network-key syntax, but the edits in that case are not safe to generalize: the reported LXC configuration-key case. Use the configuration manual that matches your release, and check the exact file and line named in the error.

Separate template and image-download failures from storage failures
If the template begins running but cannot fetch or unpack its root filesystem, creation has reached a different stage from initial configuration or storage setup. Check the exact failing URL and error, the image source’s reachability, and whether the selected template supports the requested distribution and release.
A June 2026 forum report described a download failure with LXC 5.0.0 under WSL2 / Ubuntu 22.04.3. An LXC maintainer said newer LXC had changed GPG validation behavior after problems with the GPG-key network. That report is specific to its environment; it does not establish GPG validation as the cause of other download failures: the reported image-download failure.

LXC 7.0 LTS was announced on April 30, 2026, with support stated through June 2031. The announcement lists removal of CGroupV1 support: LXC 7.0 LTS announcement. Check version-specific advice against your installed release and your distribution’s packages; upgrading alone does not identify the cause.
Investigate networking only when the error points there
For unprivileged containers, LXC documents lxc-user-nic as the helper that creates a veth pair and bridges it on the host: LXC security. The lxc-usernet(5) manual says /etc/lxc/lxc-usernet controls which unprivileged users may create network interfaces and attach them to a bridge; its entries specify a user or group, interface type, bridge, and quota: lxc-usernet(5).

Only investigate this policy when the creation output or log identifies veth or bridge setup as the failing step. Check the relevant user’s entry and the bridge named in it rather than changing network settings speculatively.
What to include when asking for help
If the error remains unclear, share enough detail for someone to identify the failing stage. Redact secrets and private addresses, but keep the error text intact.
