Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

The route depends on the process: offset uses a plate, digital printing sends image data to an output engine, and flexographic and screen printing serve other combinations of run length and substrate. This guide explains the main methods and how to choose among them for a specific job.
How does printing work?
For printed materials such as books, packaging, posters, and business documents, production usually has three broad stages: prepare the design and layout, print it on a press or digital engine, then finish or bind the output. The exact finishing steps depend on the product; they may include folding, binding, or coating. OSHA groups print production into design/layout, press, and finishing/binding in its lithography guide.

The printing process is not one single technology. Common graphic methods include offset lithography, digital printing, flexography, and screen printing. Each moves an image to a substrate differently, so the best fit depends on the job rather than a universal ranking of quality or cost.

What are the main printing methods?
Offset lithography
Offset printing relies on a flat plate whose image and non-image areas behave differently. Dampening solution wets the non-image areas, while ink adheres to the image areas. The image transfers from the plate to a rubber blanket, then from the blanket to paper or another substrate. This is the ink-and-water principle described by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

Offset presses can be sheet-fed or web-fed, and are built for high-rate production. The Society for Imaging Science and Technology describes the ink layer transferred in offset printing as about 1 micrometer thick; that is an approximate process detail, not a measure of overall print quality. See its printing tutorial.
Digital printing
Digital printing sends image data directly to an output engine without the physical plate or screen intermediate used by conventional processes. Inkjet and electrophotography are two major digital engine technologies. Because each output can be driven by data, digital printing can be practical for short runs and jobs where copies vary, such as personalized documents. Suitability still depends on the equipment, substrate, and image requirements. The Printing Industries of America discusses digital technologies and production contexts.

Flexographic and screen printing
Flexography and screen printing are also used for graphic work, but their suitability varies with the substrate and the production run. A printer can recommend a process after reviewing the material, quantity, image, and finishing specification. WRAP’s Printing Process Explained includes lithographic, digital, flexographic, and screen methods.
How does the substrate affect the result?
Paper is not a neutral carrier. Its smoothness, coating, texture, and absorbency influence how sharply an image prints, how color appears, how quickly the ink dries, and how much ink the job may need. Utah Valley University defines printability in terms of whether paper receives offset ink, inkjet ink, or laser toner well enough to meet the intended image expectation.

As a general tendency, smooth, dense, often coated stocks can retain sharpness and color more effectively than soft, textured uncoated papers. Textured uncoated stock may dry more slowly and require more ink. These are tendencies, not guarantees for every paper and press. UVU’s paper guide explains these trade-offs.
How do you choose a printing method?
Start with the finished item and its constraints, then compare methods with a printer against the exact specification. The sources do not establish a universal cost winner or a single break-even quantity across processes.

- Quantity and variation: Decide whether you need one copy, a short run, or a large consistent run—and whether each copy changes. Digital printing can suit short or variable jobs; high-rate offset production may suit larger consistent runs.
- Image and color needs: Specify image detail, color consistency, and any special color requirements. Ask which method and stock can meet them for the particular job.
- Substrate: Identify whether the work is on paper, card, fabric, or another material. Confirm that the process and available equipment support it.
- Finishing: Include folding, binding, coating, or other post-press work in the specification. The finished piece may require different production choices than an unbound sheet.
- Total job fit: Compare setup, run, stock, and finishing costs for the same quantity and specification. A price comparison that omits stock or finishing may not compare equivalent jobs.
Is 3D printing the same as printing on paper?
No. In additive manufacturing, software divides a digital model into cross-sections and the printer forms a physical object in successive layers. Material extrusion, common in desktop systems, heats filament and deposits it through a nozzle. HP describes this process and its trade-offs, including speed, accuracy, and support material, in its 3D printing overview. The U.S. Department of Energy gives 0.1 millimeter as an example of a layer thickness often used in 3D printing; it is an illustrative figure, not a universal setting (DOE explanation).
