Neither tool is the automatic winner for project diagrams: the right choice depends on which diagrams you need, where your team works, and which Visio plan you mean. Lucidchart is worth considering for browser-based collaboration across workplace apps; Visio is a stronger fit when Microsoft 365 is central or you need Plan 2’s Windows desktop, offline files, data features, or specialized diagram types.
Which is better for project diagrams?
Choose by workflow, not by product name alone. Microsoft offers Visio in Microsoft 365, Visio Plan 1, and Visio Plan 2, and their diagram capabilities differ substantially. The included Microsoft 365 app covers basic diagrams; paid plans add broader professional diagramming, while Plan 2 adds a Windows desktop app and further specialized capabilities.

Lucidchart is browser-based diagramming and collaboration software with individual and team plans. Its publisher emphasizes collaboration and integrations with workplace apps. Those are vendor-described strengths, not an independent head-to-head benchmark. Lucid says its template gallery contains more than 1,000 customizable templates; the page does not state a publication year, so treat that as an undated Lucid claim.
Which Visio plan supports the diagrams you need?
Match the exact project diagram to the plan before comparing prices. Microsoft says the lightweight Visio in Microsoft 365 app is for basic diagramming and is not a substitute for Plans 1 and 2 when specialized diagrams are required.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Visio in Microsoft 365: Supports basic flowcharts and general-purpose diagrams. It does not support every diagram type, and the lightweight app cannot edit diagrams built with unsupported types.
- Visio Plan 1: Adds professional diagramming in the web app, including cross-functional flowcharts, detailed network and cloud architecture diagrams, ERDs, UML 2.5 diagrams, mind maps, and organization charts. Microsoft also lists Power BI integration for this tier.
- Visio Plan 2: Includes Plan 1 capabilities and the Windows desktop app, with offline and local-file support. Microsoft lists BPMN 2.0, floor plans, engineering and electrical diagrams, timelines, data connectivity, custom-shape programmability, AutoCAD support, and Microsoft app integrations among its additional capabilities. Microsoft’s product page also advertises “250,000+ shapes”; this is an undated Microsoft product-page figure, not an independent count.
For network diagrams, Plan 1 or Plan 2 is the relevant comparison rather than the lightweight app. For BPMN 2.0 or desktop editing, Microsoft lists those capabilities with Plan 2. Confirm the specific diagram type and entitlement in the Visio plan comparison and Microsoft’s explanation of Visio in Microsoft 365.
How do collaboration and integrations compare?
Microsoft documents cloud storage, real-time coauthoring, comments, presence indicators, and use with Teams for current Visio web workflows. Its plan comparison also lists exporting diagrams into Microsoft applications and Power Automate for Plan 2. If your project diagrams are created and reviewed mainly in Microsoft 365, check whether those documented workflows cover your team’s needs.

Lucid says its diagrams work with Atlassian, Confluence, and Jira and describes connections to other workplace apps. If your team relies on those tools, check the specific integration and plan entitlement against your workflow. Start with the products you already use rather than assuming a broad “integrations” claim means every connection supports every action.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- VSDX: Files created with Visio 2013 or later.
- VSD: Files created with Visio 2007 or later.
- VDX: Files created with Visio 2003 or later.
For older files, Lucid advises opening them in a recent Visio version and resaving as VSDX. Lucid says paid Lucidchart accounts can edit and share Visio files and export Lucidchart documents to Visio format. Check its Visio import guidance for the current details.
Microsoft says Visio in Microsoft 365 supports VSDX but not legacy VSD; Plan 1 or Plan 2 is needed for VSD files. File-format compatibility does not guarantee that every layout, object, or feature will survive conversion, and a file that opens may still contain diagram types the target Visio tier cannot edit. Test representative files before committing to a migration.

A practical way to choose
- List the diagram types. Write down each required output—such as swimlane flowcharts, network or cloud architecture, UML, ERD, BPMN, floor plans, or engineering diagrams—and check which exact Visio tier supports it.
- Decide where work happens. If browser access is sufficient, compare the web workflows. If the team needs Visio’s Windows desktop app or offline and local-file support, Microsoft lists those with Plan 2.
- Map collaboration to your tools. Check whether your team chiefly works in Teams and Microsoft 365, Confluence and Jira, or another connected app. Confirm the integration and plan entitlement for the actions you need.
- Check data and automation requirements. If diagrams need data connectivity or Microsoft workflow exports, compare the documented Plan 2 features with the actual project requirements.
- Inventory files before switching. Note whether existing files are VSD, VSDX, or VDX. Test representative files and make sure the target product and plan can edit their diagram types.
- Compare like-for-like subscriptions. Use current prices for the right plans in your country, with your seat count and billing term. Don’t compare an included basic app with a paid professional plan as though they offer the same capabilities.
