NVMe cache is more likely to help a media NAS feel quicker when it handles repeated random reads—such as metadata-heavy work—than when it streams a large video file. Browsing a library and playing a movie are different workloads, so a snappier interface does not necessarily mean faster playback.
Why can a media NAS feel faster without faster video playback?
A media library involves more than reading movie files. The NAS and its applications also handle small, scattered reads and writes for metadata and other supporting data. If those operations are accessed repeatedly and the NAS can serve them from SSD cache, some interactions may feel more responsive even though the video files still come from hard drives.

That is a plausible explanation for a perceived improvement in browsing or library work, not proof that a particular media-server database, poster, thumbnail, or personal setup was accelerated. To describe a specific result as firsthand, you would need to identify what changed and how you measured it.

Repeated random reads and small-file activity
Synology says SSD cache is best suited to frequent access to randomly placed data, especially when the same data is reread. Its documentation says the cache accelerates random I/O by default. This is a better fit for metadata-heavy activity or workloads with many small, repeated accesses than for a one-time large-file read. Synology’s SSD cache help describes the workload considerations.

Large video streams and sequential transfers
Streaming a movie is generally a large, sequential read. Synology explicitly notes that large sequential reads and writes, including HD video streaming, have limited benefit from SSD cache. Its help documentation puts it plainly: “SSD cache by default only accelerates random I/O and does not accelerate sequential I/O.” A cache is therefore not a dependable way to make movie playback start sooner, improve playback quality, or raise large-file copy speeds.
Other workloads vendors identify as cache candidates
Synology also points to concurrent file-server use, small-file access, virtual machines, databases, snapshots, web servers, backup tasks, and mail services as workloads that may benefit. QNAP likewise describes SSD caching as a way to lower latency for frequently accessed data and highlights IOPS-intensive database, email, VM, and VDI workloads. These are vendor-specific recommendations, not guarantees for every NAS or workload. QNAP’s SSD cache guidance describes its approach.

Cache or SSD volume: which is the right upgrade?
An SSD cache transparently accelerates eligible I/O for a volume; it does not mean that chosen files or applications now live on SSD. An SSD volume is different: you place the applications or data you want directly on that storage. If your goal is to improve access to a media-server application or its supporting data, first check whether the NAS supports putting those items on an SSD volume and whether that addresses the bottleneck.

A 2026 review of the Synology DS725+ illustrates why the distinction matters: in that reviewer’s test setup, an SSD volume improved file-copy results versus the disk volume, while read-write cache did not improve simple transfers and appeared to add slight overhead. What to check before installing NVMe cache
- Exact NAS model support: Confirm that the model supports NVMe caching, not merely that it has an M.2 slot. Features and installation options differ between NAS families.
- Drive compatibility: Use the vendor’s compatibility information for your exact model. Synology warns that unsupported drives may affect stability or cause data loss. Its SNV3000 series is designed for NAS cache applications, but that does not establish compatibility with every Synology NAS. Check Synology’s compatibility list and its SSD product information.
- Memory and cache-size limits: For DSM 7.4, Synology lists an approximate requirement of 400 KiB of system memory per 1 GiB of SSD cache, with cache using no more than 25% of pre-installed system memory. These are DSM-specific configuration limits, not a performance promise. See the DSM 7.4 SSD cache specifications.
- Cache mode: DSM 7.4 supports read-only and read-write cache, and supports pinning Btrfs volume metadata to read-write cache. Do not assume another NAS platform has the same modes, behavior, or requirements.
- Hot-data size and maintenance: Synology cautions that caching is less suitable when the frequently accessed dataset exceeds cache capacity or when there is no off-peak period for cache flushing.
- Vendor-specific installation: QNAP’s guidance describes M.2 SSDs installed with QM2 PCIe cards on compatible NAS models and notes that some models have dedicated cache trays. Check the instructions for your own model rather than transferring another vendor’s hardware or settings.
How to tell whether the upgrade helped
Decide which outcome matters before changing the configuration. If the goal is smoother library browsing, observe those interactions. If it is playback, evaluate playback separately. For file transfers, use comparable file sizes and conditions and distinguish sequential copies from small, scattered file activity. A perceived improvement in one area does not establish a gain in another.
Synology reports more than 15 times higher random read/write IOPS and up to 93% lower average latency for an all-HDD array with SSD cache in its in-house tests, on a page accessed October 7, 2026. Those are vendor test results, not a universal expectation or independently verified guarantee.
