Cash and eligible term deposits are the clearest defensive choices for emergency and near-term money. Bonds can diversify a defensive allocation but can lose value, while broad, non-leveraged exchange-traded funds (ETFs) and diversified managed funds suit money that can remain invested for longer.
There is no universal “safest” investment. The right choice depends on when you need the money, how much loss you can tolerate, your liquidity requirements, fees, tax position and the exact product disclosure statement (PDS). This is general information, not personal financial advice.

Why crypto derivatives are a difficult baseline
Crypto derivatives are contracts whose value is linked to an underlying digital asset rather than a straightforward ownership interest. Futures and perpetual contracts commonly require only a margin deposit for a much larger market exposure. That leverage means a relatively small price move can consume the margin, trigger a margin call or cause the platform to close the position without your permission.

The loss can be larger than the amount initially set aside. Short-dated options and futures also use leverage, and ASIC warned in 2026 that losses can be magnified and accumulate quickly. Simone Constant, an ASIC Commissioner, put the practical problem plainly: “There is no such thing as easy money.”

Moneysmart describes complex financial products as difficult to understand and warns that leverage and other features can increase both gains and losses. As wider context for leveraged retail trading, ASIC and Moneysmart reported that at least 68% of Australian retail investors lost money trading CFDs in 2023–24. That figure is not a measurement of crypto-derivative results, so it should not be presented as one; it illustrates why removing leverage is the first risk-control decision.
What “lower risk” means in this decision
Lower risk is relative. A bank deposit normally does not fluctuate with a market price in the way a share, bond or token does, but its interest may change and inflation can erode purchasing power. A bond fund may spread exposure across many issuers yet fall when interest rates rise. A broad share-market ETF can avoid dependence on one company while still suffering a substantial market decline.
Compare alternatives on seven separate dimensions rather than searching for a single ranking:
- Loss severity and volatility: whether the value can fall and whether losses can exceed the amount invested.
- Liquidity: how quickly money can be accessed, including notice periods, settlement times and withdrawal penalties.
- Time horizon: whether the money is needed within months, in a few years or in a decade or more.
- Diversification: exposure to one issuer, token, sector, country or asset class versus a spread of holdings.
- Complexity and leverage: use of margin, derivatives, short selling or daily settlement.
- Fees and tax: ongoing, transaction, platform and withdrawal costs and the tax treatment that applies to your circumstances.
- Protections: the provider’s Australian licence status, dispute-resolution arrangements and any statutory protection that actually covers the product.
At-a-glance comparison
| Alternative | Usually fits | Main risk that remains | Access and structure |
|---|---|---|---|
| Accessible cash or high-interest savings account | Emergency reserves and near-term spending | Interest can change; inflation can reduce real value; institution and account terms matter | Generally liquid, subject to account conditions; ordinary deposit rather than a market-traded position |
| Eligible term deposit | Money that can be committed for a stated term | Early access may be restricted and may incur penalties or other costs; inflation and reinvestment risk remain | Defined rate and maturity under provider terms; not designed for instant access |
| Government or diversified bonds | Defensive diversification or income exposure | Interest-rate, credit, duration, currency and liquidity risk | Direct bond held to maturity differs from an open-ended bond fund or ETF |
| Broad, non-leveraged ETF | Longer-term growth or diversified market exposure | Market losses, tracking, currency, concentration and underlying-asset risk | Trades on an exchange; the ETF label does not make the underlying assets conservative |
| Diversified managed fund or managed portfolio | Investors who want delegated selection and rebalancing | Market, manager, fee, liquidity and structure risk | Money is pooled or allocated under a PDS; “managed” does not mean defensive |
Cash and high-interest savings accounts
Cash is the clearest starting point for money that must remain available. An accessible savings account can hold an emergency reserve, a tax provision, a house deposit needed soon or spending money without exposing the principal to daily share or token prices. The product is simpler than a leveraged derivative: there is no margin call caused by a market move and no forced liquidation of a trading position.
Liquidity is not identical across accounts. Check whether the advertised interest requires monthly deposits, a minimum balance, a limited number of withdrawals or other conditions. Variable interest can change, so a high rate today is not a promise about future income. Compare the account’s fees, transfer limits, account-holder structure and the institution’s status before moving money.

A deposit is not the same as a guaranteed investment return. The balance may be stable in dollar terms while its purchasing power falls if inflation exceeds the interest earned. Cash therefore works best for a defined short-term purpose, not automatically for every long-term goal.
Eligible term deposits
A term deposit exchanges flexibility for a stated term and interest arrangement. It can suit money you will not need until a known date and for which you want to avoid day-to-day market pricing. The provider’s terms determine the rate, maturity date, renewal treatment and what happens if you ask for the money early.
Moneysmart warns that early access may be restricted and can involve penalties or other costs. Before opening one, confirm the notice period, break-cost formula, whether interest is reduced, and whether the deposit rolls into a new term automatically. Match the maturity date to the date you actually expect to need the funds; a higher stated rate is not useful if accessing the money early creates a loss or delay.
APRA’s Financial Claims Scheme protects eligible deposits up to $250,000 for each account holder at each Australian-authorised bank, building society or credit union. APRA’s current guidance was accessed on 19 October 2026. The cap applies within the scheme’s eligibility rules and does not mean every balance or every institution is covered. Check the provider’s authorised-deposit-taking-institution status and the account structure. The scheme is not blanket protection for ETFs, managed funds, bonds, crypto assets or balances held with institutions outside the eligible scope.
Bonds: defensive exposure, not a cash substitute
Bonds are loans to governments, companies or other borrowers. They can add a different source of return from shares and may be used in a defensive allocation, but the investor is still taking investment risk. If market interest rates rise, the price of an existing fixed-rate bond generally falls. Credit deterioration, longer duration, foreign currency and limited trading liquidity can add further risk.

A bond held directly and kept until maturity has a different experience from an open-ended bond fund. Holding to maturity can return the contractual principal and interest if the issuer pays as promised, but selling early exposes you to the market price. A bond ETF or managed bond fund continuously buys and sells holdings, so its unit price can move every day and does not have a single maturity date that guarantees return of capital.

Moneysmart identifies cash and some bonds as examples of lower-risk investments while stressing that the borrower and the bond’s terms determine the actual risk.
Diversified, non-leveraged ETFs
Moneysmart defines an ETF as a managed fund traded on a stock exchange. ETFs can hold shares, bonds, property, commodities, currencies or crypto-assets, so the name alone says little about safety. A broad, non-leveraged index ETF can reduce single-company or single-token concentration and provide a transparent way to hold many securities, but its value still falls when the underlying market falls.
For a possible replacement for leveraged crypto trading, inspect the holdings rather than the marketing label. Confirm that the fund does not use leverage, margin, short selling or derivatives in a way you do not understand. Check country and sector concentration, currency exposure, the index methodology, fees, bid–ask spreads, trading volume, tracking approach and how distributions are handled. A crypto-themed ETF, leveraged ETF or derivative-heavy product is not a conservative substitute merely because it trades on an exchange.
ETFs are generally bought and sold during market hours, so the traded price can differ temporarily from the value of the underlying holdings. Settlement and brokerage costs also affect the outcome. Diversification lowers concentration risk; it cannot guarantee a profit or prevent a broad market loss.

Diversified managed funds and managed portfolios
Managed funds pool investors’ money and have a professional make investment decisions, while managed portfolios may allocate across several funds or securities and handle rebalancing for you. This can be useful if you do not want to select every holding or regularly adjust the mix yourself.
Delegating the decisions does not remove risk. Read the PDS for the assets, investment mandate, permitted leverage and derivatives, valuation frequency, withdrawal rules, fees, performance-fee method and conflicts. A fund can be labelled balanced, growth or defensive while still losing money in adverse markets. Manager decisions, platform arrangements, liquidity limits and tax consequences remain relevant.
Compare the portfolio’s actual asset allocation with your purpose. Paying for professional implementation may be reasonable for a complex situation, but a higher fee does not establish better returns or lower volatility.

Emergency and near-term money
Keep an emergency reserve and spending due within months in an accessible cash product appropriate to your circumstances. The priority is certainty of access, not maximising a long-term expected return. Avoid locking this money into a term deposit or exposing it to a market whose value could be down when the bill arrives.

Best Value
Defensive diversification
Bonds can diversify a portfolio intended to be less dependent on shares, but select the maturity, credit quality, currency treatment and fund structure deliberately. Do not describe a bond fund as a guaranteed cash reserve.
Long-term growth money
For money that can stay invested through market cycles, compare broad, non-leveraged ETFs or diversified managed funds. Evaluate the underlying assets, fees, liquidity and tax reporting rather than choosing solely on recent performance. A long horizon allows time to recover from some declines; it does not eliminate the possibility of a permanent loss.
A step-by-step way to leave leveraged crypto trading
- Stop adding leverage. Close or reduce derivative positions according to the platform’s rules, and understand any settlement, funding or withdrawal amounts still outstanding.
- Ring-fence obligations. Set aside tax, bills and an emergency reserve in an accessible cash product before deciding how much is investable.
- Write the time horizon. Separate money needed within months, money needed on a known future date and money that can remain invested for a decade or longer.
- Set a tolerable loss. Consider the dollar decline you could withstand without selling in panic. If a fall would make the plan unworkable, the allocation is too aggressive for that purpose.
- Choose the simplest suitable structure. Use cash for access, a term deposit for a committed period, bonds for measured defensive diversification, and non-leveraged diversified funds for long-term market exposure.
- Read the PDS and fee schedule. Identify the assets, leverage or derivatives, fees, spreads, withdrawal rules, valuation method, custody arrangements and tax statements.
- Verify the provider. Check Australian licence status, ownership or custody arrangements and the available dispute-resolution route. Do not assume a familiar app or exchange offers the same protections as a regulated deposit taker or fund issuer.
- Invest in stages if appropriate. A staged approach can reduce the risk of committing all long-term money on one day, but it does not remove market risk or guarantee a better entry price.
- Review only when circumstances change. Revisit the allocation after a change in goal, income, horizon or risk tolerance rather than reacting to every market headline.
Common mistakes when replacing crypto derivatives
- Swapping one leveraged product for another: a margin loan, leveraged ETF or derivative-heavy fund can recreate the same loss-amplification problem under a more familiar label.
- Calling every ETF low risk: the holdings may be concentrated, highly volatile, currency-exposed or linked to crypto assets.
- Treating a term deposit as instantly available: early-withdrawal restrictions and costs can matter more than the headline rate.
- Assuming bonds cannot fall: interest-rate and credit movements affect both individual bonds sold early and bond funds.
- Ignoring fees and tax: brokerage, spreads, management fees, platform charges, withdrawal costs and the investor’s tax circumstances change the net result.
- Relying on a protection label without checking scope: statutory protection depends on the product, institution, account-holder arrangement and eligibility rules.
- Chasing recent returns: past performance does not establish a suitable risk level or predict the next market outcome.
What to check before committing money
Use the product disclosure statement and the provider’s regulatory information to answer these questions:
- What exactly does the product own, lend, track or hold as collateral?
- Can the value fall below the purchase price, and can you lose more than you invested?
- Does it use leverage, margin, short selling, options, futures or swaps?
- How and when can you withdraw, sell or transfer the money?
- Which fees apply at purchase, during ownership, on withdrawal and when the portfolio is rebalanced?
- Who legally owns the assets, who is the custodian and what happens if the provider fails?
- What tax statements will you receive, and which tax treatment applies to your personal circumstances?
- Is the provider licensed in Australia, and where can an unresolved complaint be taken?
If you cannot map your goal, time horizon and tolerance for loss to a product’s actual holdings and rules, regulated financial advice or independent investment education may be appropriate. Verify any adviser’s licence and commercial terms before relying on the service.
How to think about “safer than crypto futures”
Cash and eligible term deposits are generally the most straightforward defensive alternatives because they remove market leverage and, for eligible deposits, may fall within the Financial Claims Scheme’s defined protection. They still involve inflation, interest-rate and access trade-offs. Bonds, ETFs and managed funds are investments, not guaranteed substitutes: their risk depends on what they hold and how they are structured.
No regulator-published, like-for-like statistic establishes one universal ranking of expected return or volatility for cash, term deposits, bonds, ETFs and managed funds against crypto derivatives. The absence of such a ranking matters. A product should be selected for a specific purpose and time horizon, not awarded a blanket “safe” label.
