Low Memory: How to Tell Whether RAM or Storage Is Low

A low-memory warning may refer to RAM used by running apps or storage used for files. Identify the resource before choosing a fix.

“Low memory” means a device or app does not have enough of a particular resource for its current task. The warning may refer to RAM, which apps use while running, or to storage, which holds apps and files. Check which resource the alert names before trying to fix it: freeing file space does not add RAM.

What “low memory” can mean

The phrase is not one standardized warning shared by every phone, computer, or app. Its meaning depends on the device, operating system, app, and the exact alert text. In everyday troubleshooting, it commonly points to one of two different resources:

Resource What it does Clue to check
RAM Provides working space for the operating system and apps while they run. A memory warning, a particular app or task failing, or a computer process monitor showing high memory use.
Storage Holds files and installed apps, including when they are not running. A storage-space warning or the device’s storage screen showing little free capacity.

A device can have plenty of storage and still run short of RAM, or have ample RAM and too little storage for another app or file. A Google Play Community troubleshooting guide suggests checking free storage when an installation fails or a low-memory warning appears, but it does not establish a universal threshold for all devices: Google Play Community guidance.

What happens when RAM is low?

When available RAM is insufficient for active work, an operating system may stop an app’s process to reclaim resources. Google’s Android vitals documentation defines low-memory kills as an app quality metric; it describes a user-perceived kill as one likely to be noticed, such as when an app is displaying an activity or running a foreground service. This is evidence that memory pressure can stop an app, not proof that every crash or slow app is caused by low RAM: Google Play Console: Monitor your app’s technical quality with Android vitals.

CORSAIR Vengeance LPX DDR4 RAM 32GB (2x16GB) Up to 3200MHz CL16-20-20-38 1.35V Intel XMP AMD EXPO Computer Memory – Black (CMK32GX4M2E3200C16)
  • Disclaimer: Maximum Speed requires overclocking/PC BIOS adjustments. Maximum speed and performance depend on system components, including motherboard and CPU
  • Hand-sorted memory chips ensure high performance with generous overclocking headroom
  • VENGEANCE LPX is optimized for wide compatibility with the latest Intel and AMD DDR4 motherboards
  • A low-profile height of just 34mm ensures that VENGEANCE LPX even fits in most small-form-factor builds
  • A solid aluminum heatspreader efficiently dissipates heat from each module so that they consistently run at high clock speeds

If the problem is limited to one app or task, that scope matters: it may be that workload, rather than the whole device, is using too much memory or encountering another problem. Repeated failures alone do not establish that the hardware is defective.

Is low memory the same as low storage?

No. Moving files to an external drive or deleting them can make more room for files and installations, but it does not increase the RAM available to running apps. A Chrome Help Community thread titled “Low memory crashes, but I have external HD” illustrates this common confusion; as a user-to-user discussion, it is not an authoritative diagnosis: Google Chrome Help Community discussion.

Use the device’s built-in storage screen to assess storage capacity. Before deleting anything, check what the files are and whether they are backed up or safe to remove. Use a memory or process monitor to investigate RAM use instead.

How to check and respond to a low-memory warning

  1. Read the complete alert. Note whether it says memory, RAM, storage space, names a specific app, or appears during a particular task. The exact wording helps distinguish a device-wide resource shortage from an app-specific failure.
  2. Check the relevant built-in indicator. Open the device’s storage screen if the alert concerns space. On a computer, use the operating system’s process monitor to see whether one app or workload is consuming memory. The exact screen names vary by device and operating system.
  3. If RAM pressure is indicated, reduce concurrent work. Close apps or tasks you do not need, then try again. If one app repeatedly triggers the warning, update it or seek support for that app or platform rather than assuming the device needs new hardware.
  4. If storage is low, address file capacity carefully. Remove or move files only after confirming they can be deleted or are safely backed up. This can make room for files or installations; it is not a RAM fix.
  5. Check upgradeability before considering more RAM. Additional physical memory is an option only for hardware that supports it, and only when the diagnosis points to RAM capacity. Verify the exact computer model and whether its memory is user-upgradeable.

When more RAM may be a remedy

Adding physical memory can help in a compatible computer when a memory monitor confirms that RAM capacity is the constraint. It is not a universal fix for a warning that might instead concern storage, a single app, or a particular task.

Microsoft documents adding physical memory among possible responses to a low-memory problem in a specific SQL Server Integration Services data-flow scenario. Its other suggestions include monitoring memory use, moving the workload to another computer, limiting concurrent work, or exiting memory-intensive applications. Those recommendations apply to that documented server workload, not automatically to a consumer phone or laptop: Microsoft Support: SSIS data-flow task in a low-memory situation.

What not to assume

  • A crash or slowdown by itself does not prove that RAM is low; check the warning and resource indicators.
  • Deleting files or connecting an external drive does not add RAM.
  • There is no universal RAM amount or storage threshold established here for every device and use case.
  • Do not treat a “memory cleaner,” registry change, or storage purchase as a general RAM remedy.
