You can search Irish companies in a single request to the Companies Registration Office’s Open Services REST API. One companies GET call takes a name and returns matching records with company number, name, address, status, registration date, annual return dates, company type, place of business and Eircode. If you already have a CRO number, a separate company/{company_num}/{company_bus_ind} endpoint fetches that one company. Those are two different requests, so a name search followed by a number-based detail call is not “one call”.
What the single call is
CRO Open Services is described by CRO as a RESTful API that uses GET requests. Its basic company and submission search is free. The companies operation searches company and business names. It returns at most 250 possible matches per search.

The CRO endpoint and overview pages don’t establish them, so confirm them in the sign-up terms you receive.

What comes back
CRO’s documented JSON example is a list of company objects. Each can include:
- company number and entity indicator (company or business name)
- company name and address lines
- registration date
- status description, status code and status date
- last and next annual return dates, and last accounts date
- company type description and code
- place of business and Eircode
For many basic lookups, such as “does this company exist, is it live and where is it?”, the search response already answers the question. Don’t assume every field is filled for every record, so handle nulls.

Fetching one company by number
When you hold a CRO number, call company/{company_num}/{company_bus_ind}. Both path parameters are required, and the indicator must be C or B. An invalid number and indicator combination doesn’t produce an error. CRO says it returns a company object with null values, so check for nulls before trusting a result.
A common pattern is to search by name once, let the user pick a result, and store the company number and indicator for later direct retrieval.

Getting access
- Sign up as a developer with CRO Open Services.
- Complete and sign the terms and conditions.
- Submit the signed copy to CRO. Full access is granted afterwards.
CRO doesn’t offer individual programming support for the free services. You can report data errors and service faults. Support is available for account holders using document streaming.
What costs money
- Free: basic company and submission search.
- Pay per call: streaming submission documents or company printouts as byte streams, for customer-account holders. CRO says document-image pricing matches ordering the same image through its company search.
- Licensed, fee-based: bulk company and business-name data.

Prefer searchType=1 or 2 with company_bus_ind=C for speed. Reserve contains-phrase searches and the combined E indicator for cases where you need them.
