Windows 11 Narrator has no setting called “math reading pause factor,” and Microsoft’s documentation describes no numeric pause slider. Two real controls get you close. One is the Math punctuation mode, which reads most mathematical symbols. The other is a Narrator option that uses punctuation to determine pauses.
What “pause factor” most likely refers to
The phrase is not a Microsoft control name. People usually mean one of four things: which symbols Narrator speaks, how punctuation shapes pauses, how fast the voice talks, or how much detail it announces. Each has its own control, covered below.

- Start Narrator if it isn’t running. Press Windows logo key + Ctrl + Enter. Narrator is built into Windows 11, so you don’t need to download or install anything. Use the same shortcut to stop it.
- Know your Narrator key. By default it is either Caps Lock or Insert. You can change it in Narrator settings.
- Switch the punctuation mode. Press Narrator + Alt + Left bracket or Narrator + Alt + Right bracket. Each press moves through the modes: Default, Math, Some, Most and All. Stop when Narrator announces Math.
- Open Narrator settings. Press Windows logo key + Ctrl + N. Review the reading and interaction options for the one that lets Narrator use punctuation to determine pauses.
- Adjust speed if the real problem is pace. Press Narrator + Plus to speak faster or Narrator + Minus to speak slower.

Limits to expect
- Math mode reads most mathematical symbols, not necessarily every one. Microsoft’s description is that general.
- Microsoft documents the punctuation-pause option as a setting to turn on or off. It does not document a numeric value for pause length. If you want longer gaps, slowing the speaking rate is the nearest documented lever.
- Menu labels and shortcuts can change with Windows updates. If a label differs on your PC, look in Narrator settings for the closest wording about punctuation and pauses.
