How Loki and Percy differ
The main distinction is operating model. Loki puts the capture, reference files, and approval workflow in your Storybook and development environment. Percy runs a hosted build-and-review workflow: it captures snapshots, compares them with approved baselines, and gives reviewers a place to inspect and approve changes or request fixes.

Choose Loki if you want a self-managed Storybook workflow
Loki fits teams that want to run visual comparisons in their own development and CI setup, keep reference files in their established workflow, and choose among its documented rendering targets. Its repository describes it as a Storybook visual regression tool and documents a sequence in which you start the environment, capture references, test, inspect differences, and approve updates.

That control also means operational responsibility stays with your team. Loki’s README says it does not start Storybook or a simulator or emulator; you must have the target environment running before capture. The repository lists Node 16 or later as a prerequisite, with GraphicsMagick, Docker, and Chrome as optional dependencies for particular modes. Check the current repository documentation for compatibility and installation details before adopting it, since dependencies and project status can change.

Documented Loki command sequence
- Start Storybook and any simulator or emulator you intend to capture; Loki does not start them for you.
- Capture or refresh reference images with
loki update. - Run comparisons with
loki test. - Inspect the resulting diff folder and decide whether each visual change is intended.
- Approve intentional changes with
loki approve; investigate unintended differences before updating references.
These commands describe the repository’s documented workflow, not a guarantee that every current release or setup uses identical prerequisites. Confirm the version-specific instructions in the repository.
Choose Percy if you want hosted rendering and shared review
Percy is a better workflow fit when you want snapshots captured during tests and a centralized build-review-approval process rather than managing the review experience around local diff files. BrowserStack documents integration with source control and CI workflows, and its service compares new snapshots with previously approved baselines. See Percy’s workflow documentation.

BrowserStack documents selectable browser coverage and managed cross-browser rendering. Each browser snapshot counts separately toward monthly screenshot usage, so a wider browser matrix increases usage. In Percy-managed rendering, BrowserStack manages fixed operating systems and updates browser and OS versions over time. If you need to compare a specific OS/browser version combination, BrowserStack documents an Automate configuration path. Review the cross-browser documentation and current plan terms for the coverage and usage that apply to your account.

Browsers and operating systems can render fonts, native controls, and scrollbars differently. A changed rendering environment can therefore alter snapshots or diff counts even when your component code has not changed. Decide whether your goal is consistency in one controlled rendering environment or coverage across the environments your users actually use, then configure the comparison accordingly.

Decide with your CI, platform, and review requirements
- Prefer Loki when the team is comfortable owning capture infrastructure and reference-file review, and its documented targets match the Storybook environments you need.
- Prefer Percy when hosted rendering, centralized review, and documented CI/source-control integration suit the team better than maintaining that workflow itself.
- Check platform needs first. Loki’s repository lists Chrome-based targets plus iOS simulator and Android emulator; Percy documents managed cross-browser rendering and an Automate route for specifying OS/browser configurations.
- Map review ownership. Decide who inspects diffs, approves intended design changes, and blocks unintended changes from being merged. The tools expose different workflows, but neither removes the need for a clear approval policy.
- Evaluate total cost using your own requirements. The cited documentation does not provide a reliable independent total-cost comparison. For Percy, include the current plan, build-history terms, and usage from per-browser snapshots; for Loki, account for the environment and maintenance work your team will own.
There is no documentation-based basis here for claiming one tool is objectively faster or more accurate. Run a small pilot on representative components and browsers if those outcomes determine your choice, and compare the same routes, baseline policy, and CI conditions.

Loki setup and maintenance
Loki’s project states an aim of easy setup, low maintenance, reproducibility across operating systems, CI execution, and support for Storybook platforms. That is the project’s stated aim, not an independent finding that every setup achieves those outcomes. Validate its current release activity, Node compatibility, dependencies, and target-platform support against your own stack.

Percy usage and history
BrowserStack’s documentation states that free-plan builds expire after 30 days and that other plans include one year of build history. These are time-sensitive plan terms, so check the current Percy documentation and your account’s plan details before relying on a retention period.
